Guess what's back at KBN reptiles?

✨Hermanns tortoise✨

Hermanns Tortoises are again becoming popular, though their housing requirements have changed drastically from how they were kept in the past.

As a general rule, tortoises do not like being picked up.
They don’t feel safe when their feet are off the ground and can lunge forward causing them to fall. If they are dropped, it can crack and damage their shell.

Contrary to popular belief, they have many nerve endings just under the shell, so can feel everything that happens to their shells. The shell of the tortoise actually contains more nerve endings than under your finger nails, so they can feel everything you do to their shells.

✨Venezuelan Suntiger✨

A stunning arboreal species with bright orange markings which is brighter when younger. They develop a green hue to their carapace as they mature.

These guys prefer it dark and humid so a deep substrate and regular misting is important!

They are very quick and can be quite defensive if provoked, so these are a intermediate species.

✨Giant Spiny Stick Insects✨

Giant spiny stick insects are a ground dwelling species, preferring to hide on the ground than climb.
As babies, they are various shades of green and brown turning almost black as adults.
Males are distinguished by their 1 inch long thorns of their back legs once adulthood is reached.
They use these as a defence mechanism, these will draw blood if used!

Did you know we can sell live food individually too?
If you have inverts that eat less frequently we can separate boxes and just sell you what you need so there is no waste and it saves you money.

Here are the latest 2 Diones who are now in shed so will move out the incubator later this week... Then for their first feed!

And a lovely group of Russians.
These are the babies that we showed you hatching the other day. They are now all fully emerged and we are waiting for them to shed now.

There are lots more clutches to share with you as they hatch. It's non stop!

🩷MEET THE TEAM🩷

✨Nigel✨ Nigel is Katie's dad, he helps in the shop 4 days a week and can normally be found sitting next to the livefood shelves. He is quality control when it comes to our livefood stocks and maintains the high quality that we pride ourselves on, if you ever need information on how to keep your livefood alive longer, just ask him! Nigel creates the bags of substrate that make up our wide range of substrate available and also specialises in Bearded dragons.

When he is not working at KBN, he is usually busy at Leamington Football Club feeding the wildlife and tending to the pitch. He has a great love of wildlife and will happily advise anyone on food for their local hedgehogs and robins!!

We've collected a LEOPARD GECKO found in a garden, early this afternoon in the WYKEN AREA.

✨Indian Ornamental✨

A popular arboreal Tarantula originating from India. They can grow up to an 18cm leg span and are an incredibly hardy species with relatively simple care needs although they do require a high humidity.

These guys are for the experienced keepers only. Whilst usually quite shy and really beautiful they are also incredibly fast and will not hesitate to bite if provoked.

Fun fact 💭: Indian ornamentals are one of very few species of Tarantula that can be kept communally (in groups) from a young age.

🩷MEET THE TEAM🩷

✨Ashley✨ In 2015, Ash started regularly coming in to the shop with his family after moving from down south. In 2017, Ash asked if he could volunteer 1 day a week to gain some more experience and then became our Saturday boy while he was at college studying Science. After leaving college, he spent more time here volunteering and as his confidence grew, he decided this was the industry for him. In late 2019, he started working here full time on an apprenticeship with Moreton Morrell College finishing in early 2022.

Ash has lived with Katie since 2020 and enjoys playing World of Warcraft and spending time with the dogs when he isn’t at work. He also loves collecting Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit memorabilia.

In October 2022, he was given the opportunity to become Assistant Manager which he gladly took on. He has a real passion for snakes and owns our breeding trio of Vietnamese Blue Beauty Ratsnakes, pair of Spotted pythons, Corn snakes and our Leopard gecko colony. Ash also runs our ever growing Invertebrate section and particularly loves Tarantulas.

✨Giant African Land Snails✨ These ones aren't so giant yet as they as the babies of big mama! Giant African Land snails have long been a favourite pet. They are easy to house, feed and are fun to handle. As well as a diet of select fruits, flowers, veggies, herbs and plenty of calcium (Cuttlefish bone, calcium cake and even crushed up snails eggs!) These guys were having a snack of Protein day yesterday. Land snails actually need a certain amount of protein to help keep their muscle mass at the optimum level. Too much protein can give them too much muscle and can result in their body becoming too large for their shell. Protein should be offered at 20 - 25% twice a week. Special snail mixes can be purchased or you can offer foods such as: Bloodworm Pinkie mice Mince meat Dead insects Dried mealworm A small amount of fish food. ✨Socotra Island Blue Baboon✨ A desert species found on “Socotra Island” which is the main island within group of islands in the Indian ocean which are south of the Arabian Peninsula. They are an excellent display species as they are very prolific webber’s covering the enclosure and decor with heavy web which they also shelter in. Fun fact 💭:They are one of very few tarantula species that can be kept communally. Due to their defensive nature and slight attitude problem they are for experienced keepers only.
