When teaching a reliable recall we can't go from learning in the back garden where there is little distraction to being off lead in public without going through a few different steps and increasing the the distractions gradually. This is Cooper learning to come away from me even when I have food in my hand.

His walking has improved immensely even in 1 session and his recall is building really nicely.

Teaching a hand touch (where they touch their nose to your hand on cue) is not only a cool trick, but has numerous behavioural benefits:

It builds focus and engagement by teaching your puppy to pay attention to you. This makes it easier to redirect their attention when they're distracted or overstimulated.

Hand targeting is also a strong foundation behaviour that supports more advanced training, such as recall, loose-leash walking, heeling, or targeting specific spots.

For shy or nervous puppies, this behaviour can help boost confidence. It’s a simple and low-pressure way for them to interact with people and new environments.

It’s also incredibly practical. You can use it to guide your puppy - go to your place, going onto the scale at the vets, or being groomed - helping to make those experiences smoother and less stressful.

If your puppy is jumping, barking, or overly excited, asking for a hand touch helps redirect that energy into something positive and controlled.

Lastly, it’s fast to teach and fun to practice. Puppies tend to enjoy it, and it provides valuable mental stimulation and positive reinforcement.
