❄️🐾 WINTER PAW CARE TIPS FOR PETS! 🐾❄️
Cold weather can be tough on your pet’s paws—here’s how to keep them comfy, safe, and healthy all season long!

🔹 1. Protect Against Ice & Salt

Sidewalk salt and de-icers can irritate and burn paw pads.
👉 Wipe paws after every walk
👉 Avoid heavily salted areas when possible
👉 Use pet-safe ice melt at home

🔹 2. Watch for Cracks & Dryness

Cold air dries out paw pads.
👉 Check regularly for cracks, redness, or peeling
👉 Use a pet-safe paw balm or moisturizer

🔹 3. Trim Fur Between the Toes

Ice balls can form on long fur and cause discomfort.
👉 Keep the hair neatly trimmed
👉 Check between toes for packed snow

🔹 4. Consider Booties

Dog booties provide protection from cold, salt, and rough ice.
👉 Choose ones with good grip
👉 Introduce them gradually so your pet gets used to the feel

🔹 5. Shorter, Smarter Walks

Freezing temps can be hard on paws (and the rest of your pet!).
👉 Opt for shorter but more frequent outings
👉 Avoid standing still on very cold surfaces

🔹 6. Moisturize After Walks

Apply paw balm after cleaning to restore moisture and prevent cracking.

🔹 7. Keep Paws Clean & Dry

Wet paws = cold paws.
👉 Dry thoroughly after being outside
👉 Check for stuck ice, debris, or hidden injuries

🐾 When to Call the Vet

• Limping or excessive licking after walks
• Deep cracks or bleeding pads
• Signs of frostbite (pale, cold, or swollen toes)

Keep those paws happy this winter! ❄️💙

🐾 WHAT’S NORMAL? 🐾
Helpful baseline vitals every pet parent should know!

Knowing what’s normal for your pet can help you spot problems early. Here are general healthy ranges for most dogs and cats:

🌡️ Temperature

🐶 Dogs: 37.5–39.2°C
🐱 Cats: 37.7–39.2°C
👉 Anything above 39.2°C is a fever.

❤️ Heart Rate (Resting)

🐶 Dogs: 60–120 beats/min (small dogs tend to be faster)
🐱 Cats: 140–220 beats/min

💨 Breathing Rate (Resting/Sleeping)

🐶 10–35 breaths/min
🐱 20–30 breaths/min
👉 More than 40 breaths/min when asleep is a red flag.

😺 Gums

Healthy gums should be:
✔ Pink
✔ Moist
✔ Quick capillary refill (when you press the gum, color returns in 1–2 seconds)

Pale, blue, bright red, or tacky gums = call your vet.

🍽️ Eating & Drinking

✔ Eating daily with normal appetite
✔ Drinking regular amounts (big changes either way can signal issues)

💩 Bathroom Habits

✔ Normal stool: well-formed, moist, easy to pass
✔ Normal urine: pale yellow
Straining, diarrhea, or blood = vet visit recommended.

⚖️ Weight & Behavior

✔ Steady weight
✔ Normal energy levels
✔ No sudden behavior changes

✨ Keep this handy! If something seems “off,” trust your instincts—early detection saves lives.

🐾 Fun Facts About Animal Paws! 🐾

1️⃣ Cats walk on their tiptoes
Cats are digitigrade walkers—meaning they stride on their toes, not their whole foot. This makes them sneaky, quiet, and super agile!

2️⃣ Dogs sweat through their paws
Those little wet footprints on hot days? That’s because dogs have sweat glands mainly in their paw pads!

3️⃣ Paw pads act like shock absorbers
The squishy pads cushion joints, protect bones, and help animals land safely from jumps or quick turns.

4️⃣ Cats have “toe beans”—and they come in all colors
Pink, black, speckled, or mixed! Toe bean color often matches their nose or coat pigment.

5️⃣ Dog paw pads change with activity
Active, outdoorsy dogs develop rougher, tougher pads—while indoor dogs often have softer, smoother ones.

6️⃣ Some animals have extra toes!
Polydactyl cats can have 6–7 toes per paw. Hemingway cats are famous for their “big mittens”!

7️⃣ Cats sweat from their paws when stressed
Ever see wet prints at the vet clinic? That’s feline anxiety—your cat is literally sweating it out.

8️⃣ Dogs have a special “carpal pad”
It sits higher up the leg and acts like a brake for turning or running downhill.

9️⃣ Paw pads help with temperature regulation
In cold-weather animals (think foxes or wolves), fur grows between toes to keep paws warm and provide grip on snow.

🔟 Cats have incredible paw sensitivity
Each paw has tons of nerve endings—so stepping on something weird or being touched unexpectedly can be a big deal to them!

Salem had to have a procedure to remove his retained testicle (cryptorchidism).

🐾 Did You Know? Cryptorchidism Can Affect Cats & Dogs 🐾

Cryptorchidism is a condition where one or both testicles fail to descend into the sc***um. It’s more common than many pet owners realize, and it’s important to catch early!

🔍 How to Spot It

Your pet seems to have only one testicle (or none) in the sc***um.

Often detected during a routine vet exam—especially before neutering.

🐶🐱 Who Can Be Affected?
Both dogs and cats can develop cryptorchidism, but it’s most common in dogs. Certain breeds have higher risk, though it can happen to any male pet.

⚠️ Why It Matters
Cryptorchid pets have a much higher risk of:

Testicular cancer

Hormone-related behavioral issues

Spermatic cord torsion (a painful emergency)

Because the retained testicle stays inside the body, where temperatures are higher, it can’t develop or function normally—and that’s where the danger begins.

🩺 The Good News
Cryptorchidism is treatable! The recommended solution is surgical neutering, which removes both the descended and retained testicle(s). This prevents future health problems and stops the condition from being passed to offspring.

Cats are a little bit trickier due to their fat pad in which the testicle often likes to hide as was the case with this little dude.

🐾 What You Can Do
✔ Schedule regular wellness exams
✔ Neuter pets with cryptorchidism—breeding is strongly discouraged
✔ Ask your vet if you’re unsure whether your pet's testicles have fully descended

Healthy pets = happy homes. 💙 If you have questions about cryptorchidism or think your pet might be affected, your veterinarian is the best place to start!

🐶💨 Tracheal Collapse in Dogs: What Pet Owners Should Know 💨🐶

Have you ever heard your dog make a goose-honking cough?
It might be more than “just a cough”—it could be a sign of tracheal collapse.

🐾 What Is Tracheal Collapse?

Tracheal collapse happens when the trachea (windpipe) weakens and narrows, making it hard for air to pass through.
It’s most common in small breeds like Yorkies, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Pugs, and Shih Tzus.

🔍 Common Signs

• Honking, harsh cough (especially when excited)
• Trouble breathing or noisy breathing
• Gagging or retching
• Exercise intolerance
• Worsening symptoms in heat, stress, or after pulling on a collar

🩺 How Vets Diagnose It

Your veterinarian may use:
• A physical exam & listening for the characteristic cough
• X-rays
• Fluoroscopy or endoscopy for more detailed evaluation

💙 Treatment Options

Treatment depends on how severe the collapse is:

🟦 Mild–Moderate Cases
• Cough suppressants
• Anti-inflammatories
• Bronchodilators
• Weight management
• Switching from a collar to a harness
• Avoiding heat and overexcitement

🟧 Severe Cases
• Oxygen therapy
• Hospitalization
• Tracheal stent placement (for select patients)

🏠 How You Can Help at Home

✔ Keep your dog at a healthy weight
✔ Use a harness, never a neck collar
✔ Avoid smoke, perfumes, aerosols
✔ Prevent overexertion
✔ Keep calm environments on hot or humid days

🐾 When to Call Your Vet

If your dog is:
• Coughing frequently
• Struggling to breathe
• Turning blue or pale around the gums (emergency!)
• Becoming lethargic or collapsing

Early care can dramatically improve your dog’s comfort and quality of life.

Bandit being very good for an abdominal ultrasound.

Did you know that one of the safest and most effective ways to check what’s happening inside your pet’s body is through an abdominal ultrasound?

This gentle, non-invasive scan lets us examine important organs such as the liver, kidneys, spleen, bladder, stomach, intestines and even check for pregnancy in some animals. 🩺💙

✨ Why we may recommend abdominal ultrasound:
✔️ Helps diagnose vomiting, weight loss, pain, or changes in behavior
✔️ Detects tumors, inflammation, stones, and organ disease
✔️ Safe for all ages — no radiation, no recovery time
✔️ Provides immediate, real-time results

Keeping your pet healthy means understanding what’s going on beneath the fur. If your pet is showing unusual symptoms or your vet suggests an ultrasound, it’s a simple step that can make a big difference.

Rabbits Hide Illness — Here’s What Owners Should Watch For 🐰💛

Rabbits are adorable, gentle, and… absolute experts at hiding when they’re unwell.
Because they’re prey animals, they mask symptoms until things become serious — which means tiny changes can be big red flags.

🚩 Signs Your Rabbit Needs a Vet ASAP

• Eating less or not eating at all – even a few hours matters
• Fewer or smaller droppings – can indicate gut slowdown
• Sitting hunched, grinding teeth – a sign of pain
• Runny nose or watery eyes – possible respiratory infection
• Tilting head or balance issues – neurological or ear problems
• Sudden aggression or hiding – often pain-related
• Wet chin or drooling – may signal dental disease

🔥 Why These Symptoms Matter

Rabbits are prone to GI stasis, a life-threatening condition where the gut slows or stops.
It must be treated quickly — early intervention saves lives.

💡 Pro Tip: Track Your Bun’s Poops

Healthy rabbits produce plenty of round, dry, crumbly droppings.
If you notice fewer poops, smaller pellets, or strange shapes… that’s your sign to call us.

🩺 Regular Checks = Longer, Healthier Lives

Rabbits need annual exams, dental checks, and a hay-heavy diet to thrive.

If you ever feel like “something’s not right,” trust your gut — it usually means your rabbit needs attention. We’re always here to help your little hopper stay happy and healthy. 🐇💚

Preparing Your Pet for Vet Visits: Fear-Free Tips (Including Medication Options)

We want every pet to feel safe and calm during their visit — and sometimes that means using pre-visit pharmaceuticals (PVPs). These medications are gentle, short-acting, and can make the entire experience much less stressful for both pets and owners.

🟢 Fear-Free Prep at Home

• Bring your pet’s favourite high-value treats
• Practice short “happy visits” to the clinic
• Leave carriers out at home so they feel familiar
• Use pheromone sprays (Feliway/Adaptil) 10–15 minutes before travel
• Keep car rides calm and quiet

🟣 When Calming Medications Are Helpful

If your pet shows signs of anxiety such as pacing, panting, trembling, hiding, or refusing to enter the clinic, they may benefit from pre-visit medication.

💊 Common Vet-Prescribed Options

(We will help choose the safest & best option for your pet — never medicate without guidance.)

For dogs:
• Trazodone – great for reducing situational anxiety
• Gabapentin – especially helpful for both fear and pain
• Dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel (Sileo) – can help calm highly anxious dogs

For cats:
• Gabapentin – one of the most effective and safest options for stressed cats
• Pheromone wipes (not a drug, but great to use on carriers!)

🧡 Why Medication Helps

Fear doesn’t just make visits stressful — it can:
• Increase heart rate and blood pressure
• Make handling difficult or unsafe
• Mask medical symptoms
• Cause pets to avoid future vet care

A calmer pet = a safer, more accurate, and more comfortable visit.

If you think your pet might benefit from calming medication before their next appointment, just give us a call — we’re happy to help create a low-stress plan. 🐾
