Here is another lovely story about a long term patient of ours, Syra, as told by her dedicated owner 🐾💜🐶

‘I can’t speak highly enough of the Hydrotherapy team and what they have done for my German Shepherd, Syra.

In late 2019 she was starting to have mobility issues and wasn’t able to walk far. After an assessment, it was believed to be the onset of ‘Degenerative Myelopathy’ and Syra started weekly sessions, beginning with 3 sets at 0.5mph for 2 minutes.

Although the Hydrotherapy would not cure her condition, the fantastic work the team did with Syra enabled her to more than double her speed and length of sets, and aided her to return to enjoying her walks again.

After 95 sessions, Syra had to stop treatment due to her condition worsening and a bout of Pneumonia.

However, I will always be grateful for the work the team have done to help Syra manager her condition and maintain her quality of life and giving me two additional years with her.

Thank you Amy & Katie’

Cheeky chappy Charlie visits us every fortnight, here’s his story as told by his owner-

“Bringing Charlie (13 years old) to hydrotherapy at Moorview Referrals has changed his life. He began hydro after partially tearing his cruciate ligament, unfortunately due muscle loss on his back legs the injury wasn’t healing well on its own and Charlie was limping and struggling to walk in general. Since starting hydro, Charlie’s muscles have really built up again and his walking has improved significantly. I truly believe hydrotherapy is the main reason Charlie is still here with us today. Amy and Katie are also really lovely and you can tell they’re super passionate about what they do”

Loki-Bear (1year,6months old) 🐾🐶

Loki was referred to moorview referrals after an one-off episode of waking up yelping in pain and showing signs of lameness in his hind limbs.

It was confirmed after scans that Loki had hip-dysplasia. We had discussions with his vet and it was decided that an intensive course of hydrotherapy along side physio would be beneficial for Loki.

This was in the hopes that his muscles would build and the lameness in his hind limbs would improve as he continued to grow, aiming to reduce the possibility of a hip replacement being required.

Loki attended his sessions twice a week, each time becoming more confident and excited to go in the water! It took a while but finally due to the hard work off his hydrotherapist, on his 17th session we saw a massive breakthrough in his response to treatment.

Last week, after an intensive 3 month hydro course and some physio sessions, we had a follow up appointment with the vet. They were very impressed with how much his mobility had improved and felt like he was a “completely new dog!” Due to this Loki does not require a hip-replacement at this time and will continue to work with his hydrotherapist 💙🐾🐶

A lovely little testimonial to end the day on 🥰

“Our Alfie sadly managed to slip a disc in his back which required surgery. The support from the vets and nurses was amazing really put us at ease, despite Alfie being grumpy. He came home and had outpatient physio with Rebecca which was fantastic , Rebecca was also so patient with him and he came on so well. Following this he had 8 sessions of hydrotherapy, despite Alfie hating the water, these sessions are what brought him on more. Katie and the team provided incredible support not only to Alfie but to myself , Katie would always be honest with how Alfie was doing and I could tell he really enjoyed a cuddle off her! The support from Katie and the team has help us so much through a horrible situation, we were so worried he may never walk again, 11 week after his surgery Alfie has been discharged and is happy as ever🥰. We can't thank everyone enough you are all amazing 💓. “

Here are few words about beautiful Bracken and her Hydrotherapy journey, sent in by her owner😍🐶💜

Bracken was 15 months old when she came to me and within a few weeks it was apparent that she has some mobility issues.
A vet trip confirmed she had bilateral hip dysplasia and patella luxation.

Obviously as an owner you fear the worst and I was all set for major surgery, but hydrotherapy was suggested as a first port of call.
I was 100% on board with trying anything less invasive and we started on a fairly intensive course of hydrotherapy. Within a relatively short space of time Bracken was moving more freely and had gained muscle mass in her rear legs.
We’re now almost 4 years on and Bracken is loving life as an active spaniel! I keep her physique as trim as possible and she still attends 6 weekly hydrotherapy sessions.
She enjoys some Gundog training as well as Agility, something I thought we’d never be able to do!

Can’t thank the girls at Moorview Hydrotherapy enough for giving Bracken a better quality of life 💜🐾💜

Rosie was diagnosed in August 2019 with Spondylomyelopathy (aka Wobblers Syndrome), a genetic spine condition which almost paralysed Rosie shortly after diagnosis. Thankfully the amazing neurologist Kate and the wonderful team at Moorview Referrals successfully performed major spinal surgery to enable Rosie to walk again! This of course has not been a straightforward process and Rosie had to go through an intensive rehabilitation programme of Laser Therapy, Physio & Hydrotherapy in order for her to walk unassisted and comfortably on her own.

Rosie has since visited Amy & Katie at Moorview for Hydro every month to maintain her joints and mobility and has benefited greatly because of this! Not to mention how much Rosie loves her visits to see them and they too are so lovely and welcoming to her which as any owner/dog parent will agree makes you feel happy that your furbaby is in great hands!

We cannot thank you enough!

Billy, 6 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel:
'We were told about hydrotherapy following two operations Billy required for his cruciate ligament and subsequently meniscus.

We didn’t know anything about it but decided it was worth a go.

The staff were extremely friendly and put us and Billy at ease straight away. His leg improved over the course of the treatment and he gained muscle through the process. He’s now back to his old self.

Not only did it help him physically but it also helped him with his confidence to rediscover the world and he’s now really keen to get in any water !

We would highly recommend hydrotherapy at Moorview'.

We treat cats!

This is a little case study of a cat we helped last year 🐱

Casper was referred for Hydrotherapy following bilateral Femoral Head and Neck Excision surgery in February 2020. Casper had an unfortunate accident back in February which left him needing major reconstruction to both hips.
Casper’s owner has noticed Casper isn’t quite as active as he was before surgery, and that he can’t jump up onto certain surfaces any more as he lacks strength and muscle mass in his hind limbs, which is why he was referred for Hydrotherapy treatment.
Casper was our very first feline patient and he did his species proud! He was impeccably well behaved and took to it like a true champ, once he got over the initial panic of the water!
Hydrotherapy for any animal is highly beneficial following surgery or injury, and our feline friends shouldn’t have to miss out. We hope to meet many more cats in the hydro department.

Another lovely testimonial, this time from Little Max and his owners ❤️🐶❤️

“At the end of March 21, Max our 2 1/2 year old Cavapoo, suddenly started to lose control of his rear leg movement.

After consulting our local vet he was immediately referred to Moorview Referrals for a scan, which showed a grade 5 ruptured disc. We were advised with this injury the possibility of recovery was slim.
He was discharged after two days unable to use his rear legs and doubly incontinent. He had a catheter inserted for urine.

He then commenced twice weekly physiotherapy and laser treatment at Moorview and daily physiotherapy at home.
At this time he could only walk by having his back legs suspended by a sling. He had his catheter removed and his urine was expressed.

After five weeks post op, the first breakthrough came when he started to use his back legs to walk, albeit in a wobbly uncoordinated manner. In the following weeks his improvement continued to such an extent that the physiotherapist discharged him and he started hydrotherapy.

At his six monthly review, the operating vet was delighted with his progress. By now his walking was becoming more consistent and although he was still doubly incontinent, he could now signal to us that he needed to go.
Other significant improvements noted were, running, chasing a ball, climbing over a step threshold, getting down from the sofa and managing to poo unaided.

To date, progress continues focusing on strengthening his back legs by hydrotherapy and improving his general physical fitness.

A little testimonial from Monty and his family ❤️

“My family and I have nothing but praise for the wonderful staff at Moorview Referrals. Monty had a horrific accident in July 2019. He had two broken legs, both of which required complicated surgery by the team at Moorview Referrals. He was almost immobile for six weeks and then left with external pins to one leg for eighteen weeks.
By this time he was hopping on three legs with his fourth leg raised significantly off the ground. He had no muscle in that leg and would not use it at all.
We approached Amy the hydrotherapist who explained the hydrotherapy in great detail. We had low expectations ourselves so we were amazed at the improvements over the first few weeks. After twelve sessions it is unbelievable the progress Monty has made. He is so happy,he runs, chases and plays just as he did before. Our friends are flabbergasted when they see him as they all secretly thought he would never walk again. We are so grateful to the girls for their hard work and persistence with Monty. It's a joy to have our beautiful dog back. We couldn't recommend Hydrotherapy highly enough."

Here at Moorview Referrals Hydrotherapy Centre, we don’t just treat short term rehabilitation cases, we also treat long term, sometimes lifelong conditions.

Syra started her hydrotherapy journey back in January 2020 after her owner noticed her starting to slow down on walks, and sometimes was reluctant to even go on a walk, which is not like Syra!
She also started to have problems with her hind limbs where she would sometimes fall and get her legs in a bit of a knot!
The vets suspected Syra had the start of ‘Degenerative Myelopathy’. This is a non-painful, progressive condition which affects the spinal cord, commonly affecting German Shepherd dogs.
Syra has been attending hydrotherapy weekly since January, and does between 10-12 minutes on the underwater treadmill each time, and we are pleased to report Syra hasn’t deteriorated, her condition has continued to be well managed, and she’s back to enjoying her walks!
We look forward to seeing Syra and her owner every week and we’re pretty sure she loves her sessions too…although that could be because of the biscuits!

At Moorview referrals we have a dedicated small animal rehabilitation team consisting of an ACPAT Veterinary physiotherapist with over 15 years experience in treating animals and humans and a qualified small animal hydrotherapist who can rehabilitate your pet using an underwater aquatic treadmill.

Rehabilitation is essential for your pet after surgery like it is for us to gain muscle strength, improve limb use and return to normal daily activities and exercise.

Most pets love physiotherapy which involves lots of hands on massage, stretches and exercises and teaches you many techniques which you can do to help your pets recovery at home.

Hydrotherapy, using an aquatic underwater treadmill is a safe and enjoyable controlled form of exercise to build muscle mass and help restore fitness post-surgery or injury. Hydrotherapy can also play a big part in conservatively managing a number of conditions such as hip and elbow dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

For further information please call us on 0191 3388890 where our team will be happy to help.
