Ahead of the upcoming fireworks over the next few days, a repost of our top tips below:

💊 Neutraceutial calmers - over the counter calming tablets (or liquid for cats) which help ease the anxiety and increases serotonin
🙈 Hiding Places - for nights like Guy Fawks Night or New Years Eve, lots of dark hiding places they can retreat too so they feel safe
🍝 Carbohydrate Loading - on particular nights, they can have a ‘carb happy’ dinner whilst it’s daylight. Like us, pasta/bread/rice is comfort food for our pets and helps increase serotonin making them feel happier and also sleepier
☀️ Daylight - feeding before dusk, toilet breaks and calling cats in before it gets dark can also help and reduce the risk of anyone going missing
🎶 TVs and Radio - during known firework displays try and play the radio and TV loudly to try and give them some background noise or a different noise to focus on
🩺 Prescription Medication - sometimes their fears are so severe they need prescription medication, if your pet suffers severely do contact us and see what we can do to help

Please do contact us to discuss your pet if they find the next few days more stressful than normal 🎆

As pet owners ourselves, we really do sympathise with everyone who has four legged friends that struggle over fireworks & bonfire season 💥❤️

‼️ WARNING IMAGES OF SURGERY ‼️

Cats are known for having 9 lives… this may have used up a few of Tilly’s 🐱

Tilly came into us after being off colour with a bloated abdomen… an ultrasound revealed that she had a humongous pyometra. More common in dogs, a pyometra is a pus filled uterus, which is life threatening if left untreated🚨

She is 13yrs old, but her owners made the decision to proceed with surgery. Her pyometra was 1kg 😱 We couldn’t believe it! 🤯 She coped with the anaesthesia very well & has since made a full recovery 🥹😇

Well done Tilly!! 👏🏼

Top tips for safe Halloween fun:

🎃 Keep chocolate and sweets out of reach from dogs. Theobromine and Xylitol found in lots of sugary snacks is poisonous to dogs, so if ingested, please contact us immediately for advice
🎃 Candle lit pumpkins should be kept away from inquisitive noses and waggy tails! It’s not uncommon for dogs or cats to burn themselves if they are having a sniff or are excited, so please be mindful of where they are placed
🎃 If you are worried about your pets and how they might cope with lots of door knocking, create a safe space for them where they can hide away, or leave some sweets outside in a bowl asking people to not knock, but help themselves
🎃 Keep collars on dogs & check microchip details are up to date. Sometimes dogs can slip out the door without us realising if they are scared or excited, so by making sure they have a collar and tag on means they can be reunited with you quicker
🎃 Try to walk dogs before it’s dark, or skip their evening walks. Call cats in where possible and keep the cat flaps locked for the night

If you are worried about your pets at all, please call us on 01483 272999 for advice 👻

You wouldn’t know this was not even four hours after emergency surgery 😱

Charlie presented to us with bloat but turned into a gastric dilation volvus - where the stomach fills with gas, flips and twists. It’s a life threatening emergency 🚨

He was quickly stabilised & rushed into theatre, where the team were able to put his stomach back in the right place & keep it there. He stayed with us for another 24hrs, he was then discharged 🥳

We’re still not entirely sure what exactly causes bloat in dogs but it is thought that eating large amounts of food before or after exercise may be a contributing factor 🍔 We do know that large breeds of dog, or deep chested breeds (such as Irish Setters, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Dobermanns etc) are more prone to bloat or a GDV.

Ways to reduce the chances of bloat include:

- Waiting at least 1hr before or after feeding before exercise
- Consider using a slow feeder to slow down the rate they eat their food
- Feed smaller meals a few times a day (eg rather than 1 large meal, 2-3 smaller meals)

We’ve previously listed the signs of bloat but as a refresher they include: wretching or trying to vomit but not producing anything, distended hard abdomen that’s getting bigger quickly, a panicked expression on their face, staggering around & becoming progressively more unsettled 🚨
