Our stand alone site is just on the outskirts of Crawley on the main road towards Turners Hill Village. Free parking is available on site for over 50 cars and we are also serviced by the Metrobus 84 bus route. We are a destination centre with 2 acres of beautiful show gardens giving inspiration and creativity on how to renovate and install a water feature or pond into your garden. Families are more than welcome to enjoy their lunch in our picnic area surrounded by the wonderful sound of water and smell of flowers. Once inside the store you’ll also find a complete range of pumps, filters, pond equipment, aggregates and consumables. We’re packed full of high grade koi and a full selection of all popular pond fish species. Our koi systems are run on the latest filtration technology, please allow us to show you how easy cleaning a filter can be. Whilst an emphasis is placed on water gardening throughout the busy summer season we also have an extensive and thriving tropical fish house and range of aquariums and also stock a wide variety of consumables. You will also find a complete and thorough range of substrates, ornaments, tools and backgrounds to complete the look and feel of your aquarium. Our tropical fish house has over 100 aquariums of tropical, Temperate and Coldwater fish. We also have a 1400L display aquarium which always has the wow factor homing some amazing tropical fish from around the world.

There’s something about bogwood, plants and tropical fish that just look right.

Bogwood isn’t just any wood though, and for a start, it sinks. So why is it called bogwood? They are actually from bogs and are ancient roots and branches that have been semi preserved by the anaerobic conditions of the bog.

There are other types of wood available like Mopani wood, which has a two-tone effect – an effect that has been created by sandblasting one face of the wood, and that can be very appealing on the eye, too.

When choosing any wood, first of all make sure that it is safe to be placed in aquariums as not all wood is. World of Water’s wood comes from reliable sources and is guaranteed safe in aquariums and with freshwater fish.

When you first place bogwood under water it may leach tannins and stain the water the colour of tea. This is perfectly natural and will create conditions similar to many tropical fish habitats in South America, South-east Asia and West Africa.

If you don’t like the water to be too brown, either soak the wood for several weeks in tapwater or place it in an old saucepan and boil it for a while. Activated carbon is very effective at removing tannins, so the regular replacement of carbon in your filter will help keep the water crystal clear.

Most fresh water aquariums can be set up with live plants and whenever possible, it is recommended to do so. Some of the benefits of live plants are that they:

- Supplement filtration - they absorb ammonium, nitrates, and phosphates, and even assimilate other undesirable substances from aquarium water.

- Produce oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide when the aquarium is illuminated.

- Provide natural shelter for fish, thereby reducing stress and supporting natural behaviour. Plants also provide hiding places for baby fish and for species that are being harassed by other inhabitants.

- Provide the main decoration feature of aquariums and supply a dynamic element to the aquarium as they grow.

Tips on Where to Position Your Tank

DO place it in a room that is used often, such as the living room. This way your fish become part and parcel of your life - and you get to enjoy them every day.

DO make sure there are power points within easy access.

DO choose a spot that allows easy access. It’s no fun carrying out maintenance in a cramped space.

DON’T position it where the fish are likely to be frightened by children or pets dashing around.

DON’T put it next to a window as the sunlight can cause algae to form on the glass. Too much sun such as in a conservatory can also cause the water to overheat.

DON’T position your aquarium near doors or radiators - draughts and central heating will affect the temperature of the water. The fish may also be upset by the noise and vibration caused by doors being opened and closed frequently.

Plan ahead 🍃 🍁

The OASE UK SwimSkim 25 has its own built in pump which causes a suction so that fallen leaves and pond debris are drawn towards its collection basket, the collection chamber can then easily be removed by hand, and the user can discard with its unwanted contents. By removing leaves and other undesirable pollutants, not only will the pond look cleaner, it should also aid the water quality.

The Oase SwimSkim 25 will also notably reduce the amount of time the pondkeeper has to spend netting out dead leaves from the bottom of the pond, which can be exhausting and difficult.

Due to the SwimSkim being a self floating device, it will conveniently adapt to any changes in pond depth.
