Yesterday I had a brilliant afternoon attending an Emergency Canine Care course with Dog First Aid - Sussex!

I learnt how to give a dog CPR, how to bandage limbs, ears and paws and how to handle lots of other emergencies like burns, seizures, heatstroke and poisoning.

I feel so much happier knowing that I’m prepared to handle any situation that could come up in my classes or with my one to one training clients! 🐾❤️

So proud of my September puppies who graduated from puppy classes last night!! 💕

The puppies and their humans have all worked so hard and have come such a long way in the last five weeks!

Sadly two of the pups were poorly so we’ll have to schedule their graduation for a later date!

The recent publication of the study titled Comparison of the Efficacy and Welfare of Different Training Methods in Stopping Chasing Behavior in Dogs (Johnson and Wynne, 2024) has sparked significant debate across the animal welfare community. This study, which adds to the growing body of evidence on the adverse effects of shock collars (e-collars), highlights serious concerns regarding the welfare of dogs subjected to this training method. Going to your first puppy class can be a bit stressful if you don’t know what to expect. The best thing to do so that you and your puppy can make the most of it is to be as prepared as you can.

Here are some of my tips for how to prepare for your first puppy class:

1. Visit the venue on your own. Whether you’re able to visit a class beforehand or not, just going along to the venue can help you plan for how you’re going to get there, how long it will take, where you will park and where you can take your puppy to the toilet before class.

2. Get in touch with the trainer beforehand. It can be really helpful to know exactly what you need to bring along to the class, where to go when you get there and if there’s anything you need to do beforehand so that you are prepared. 

3. Pack your bag the day before. Make sure you have everything you need for classes the day before, so that you have time to buy anything you might be missing or that might have been used or chewed without you realising.

All of these will help you and your puppy to be able to enjoy your first class without too much stress and uncertainty.

Marker Words!

A simple, clear marker word that is used at the right time can absolutely transform the success of your dog training.

We use a marker word to pinpoint the exact moment the dog has done what we’ve asked for, always followed by a reward. This is effective because it bridges the gap between the behaviour and reward, so the dog knows what they are being rewarded for.

Here are my top three tips for getting marker words right:

1. Build the value

A marker word means nothing to our dog until we’ve associated it with something they love. A really simple way to do this is say your marker and then immediately give your dog a tasty treat. Then repeat. Many times!

2. Timing

In order for a marker word to help us be really accurate in our training, we have to make sure the timing is spot on. This helps the dog to learn when they’re doing what it is we’ve asked them for.

3. Keep rewarding

If you say it, you pay it! For our marker to stay effective we have to keep rewarding our dog every time we use it.

Following these tips will have a dog who immediately looks at you for a reward every time they hear their marker! This is exactly what we want!
