Having pets means there’s a lot more to consider on New Year’s Eve than what to wear. Although it does at least mean a guaranteed slobbery kiss at midnight! 😉
Here’s how I’ll be spending New Year’s Eve with my pets this year…
🎉 Go for a walk before it gets dark
The risk of fireworks on New Year’s Eve begins the minute it gets dark. So to make sure we don’t end up directly underneath a rocket, we head out for walkies in the afternoon, while it’s still light.
🎉 Staying in with the pets
Although Amber isn’t too bothered by fireworks and is pretty chilled about being left alone, I don’t want to risk her getting scared if there are any particularly loud bangs close by. So we always make sure Amber is included in our New Years plans.
🎉 Turn on the appliances
Although washing is the last thing I want to be doing on New Year’s Eve, appliances like washing machines and dishwashers can be great background noise to block out some of the firework sounds.
🎉 Play background music
As another way to drown out the sound of any fireworks, I out music on the speakers in rooms we’re not in. This helps to block some of the firework sounds throughout the house.
🎉 Create a safe space
Some dogs like to have a cosy den to hide in if they get scared. Amber’s not really a fan of enclosed spaces but goes to our bed when she gets frightened, so I make sure our bedroom is a cosy and safe place she can retreat to if needed.
Not all pets need special treatment but some can find fireworks really frightening, so it’s best to do all you can to keep them safe and happy.

One of the best things about Christmas is all the yummy food and there’s no reason your pup should have to miss out!
There are plenty of meats, fruits and veggies that dogs can eat, including turkey, chicken, ham, sausages, potatoes, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, peas, cucumber, apples, pears and cranberries. You could add some goodies to their meal or use some as treats for training.
Just make sure to avoid anything harmful for dogs like chocolate, raisins, grapes and foods high in salt, fat and sugar.
What’s your dog’s favourite festive food?! 🐶

Marker Words!
A simple, clear marker word that is used at the right time can absolutely transform the success of your dog training.
We use a marker word to pinpoint the exact moment the dog has done what we’ve asked for, always followed by a reward. This is effective because it bridges the gap between the behaviour and reward, so the dog knows what they are being rewarded for.
Here are my top three tips for getting marker words right:
1. Build the value
A marker word means nothing to our dog until we’ve associated it with something they love. A really simple way to do this is say your marker and then immediately give your dog a tasty treat. Then repeat. Many times!
2. Timing
In order for a marker word to help us be really accurate in our training, we have to make sure the timing is spot on. This helps the dog to learn when they’re doing what it is we’ve asked them for.
3. Keep rewarding
If you say it, you pay it! For our marker to stay effective we have to keep rewarding our dog every time we use it.
Following these tips will have a dog who immediately looks at you for a reward every time they hear their marker! This is exactly what we want!
Give it a go and let me know how you get on in the comments 🐾
