🐮 Ways to prevent calf pneumonia - Ventilation & Housing🐮
🌬️Optimum ventilation allows stale, moist air to be exchanged for fresh, clean air. In poorly ventilated houses, pathogens, dust and noxious gasses like ammonium can compromise the calves' airways.
A dry, straw bed is a great way of keeping your calves healthy and content, by reducing stress and regulating body temperature. Floor slope, drainage and ventilation are important factors in maintaining dry bedding. Feed intake and feed conversion are both linked to calf health. Make sure your calf feed plan is optimal, for the type of animal and the targeted weight gain 💪

🐮 How does Pneumonia spread? 🐮
Viruses are considered the initial cause of the majority of calf pneumonia outbreaks. In addition, bacteria and lungworm can also play a role.
🤒 Calves with pneumonia can produce large quantities of causal viruses and bacteria, which can infect neighboring animals through saliva spread by close contact and coughing. By vaccinating all your calves you can significantly reduce the spread.
Routine vaccination protects your calves from severe pneumonia outbreaks. As well as reducing severity of clinical signs and viral shedding, it saves your business money in the long term. Don’t hesitate, vaccinate! Read more: https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/vaccine-use-in-livestock

🐮 Why is calf pneumonia important? 🐮
Around 3/4 of calves diagnosed with calf pneumonia are found to have lung damage at the time of slaughter. Pneumonia severely impacts calf growth rates leading to loss of revenue to farmers.
Calf pneumonia costs the farming community £80 million per year. Prevention measures are the most sustainable and cost-effective way to manage the disease.
