The law changes on June 10th to make it compulsory to have cats in England microchipped.

So we are holding another FREE cat microchipping event at the Blue Cross Devon on Wednesday 12th June - 2pm-4pm.

Make sure your cat/s are legal. We get so many stray or injured cats bought into the surgery each year who aren't microchipped and we cannot reunite them with their owners, microchipping is a quick solution to this.

*** Warning graphic images ***

We had an emergency goat caesarian at the surgery yesterday. Flora (the goat) had managed to push the head out but the kid was stuck at the shoulders. Matthew decided it would be safest to perform a caesarian section, resulting in a live birth and a much happier Flora!

The total lifespan of a fly is estimated to be 15-25 days.

By the 12th day, a fly will reach maturity and after this
point, females can lay over 500 eggs usually in batches
of 75 – 150. That’s a quick population increase once those
500 eggs reach maturity, usually two weeks.

That’s why it’s important to have a strategy for all the
stages of the fly-berg. Simply tackling the adults may not
decrease your population on farm because the females
might have already laid their 500 eggs somewhere.

Cleanliness is key to reduce your overall population –
displacing and removing their breeding ground, but there
are other products available to keep on top of that 85%,
including parasitic wasps – an organic solution.

For more information on fly control, please speak to one of our vets.

FREE CAT MICROCHIPPING EVENT.

Following on from the success of our last session we are holding another FREE microchipping event for cats, in conjunction with Blue Cross Devon at their site in Exeter.

The law changes from June 10th that all cats in England need to be microchipped. It is important to be able to help reunite stray pets with their owners and has been a legal requirement for dogs for some time now.

Don't miss out, bookings not required.

As we come to the end of Veterinary Receptionist Week I wanted to take this chance to say a HUGE Thank you to all of our receptionists for the wonderful job they do everyday.
Not knowing what is going to come through the door next or what emergency phone call is about to occur, whilst having to still oversee a busy waiting room and continue to serve clients, is no easy task, but we have a amazing team who do this brilliantly.

So we shared a list the other day of tasks which our receptionists perform alongside their meet and great roles. It was quite a long list and believe it or not they weren't all of the tasks.
Here are some more of the tasks our wonderful reception team complete alongside phone answering and client serving.

Celebrating Great British Beef Week - 23 - 30 April 2024

The nationwide campaign Great British Beef Week (GBBW) is back for its 14th year.

Created by farmer group Ladies in Beef, GBBW unites farmers, supermarkets, butchers, farm shops, pubs and restaurants to celebrate the versatility and exceptional taste of naturally delicious British beef.

We are very lucky to have excellent butchers in Crediton stocking locally produced meats.

Today marks the start of Vet Receptionist Awareness Week.

Being a veterinary receptionist is a bit like being a circus performer, they are always juggling! People often think that receptionists spend the day answering phones and helping clients, whilst this is a massive part of their jobs they do lots of other things as well, so we wanted to highlight the work involved in a vet receptionist role.

FEC - what do we do with the information?

Faecal egg counts (FECs) are increasingly beneficial in the face of resistance to some anthelmintic treatment products. The FEC results can be used to determine:

* If treatment is needed - responsible use of wormers
* If treatment has worked - ineffective treatment can build up resistance so it's always advised
* Give information about contamination going onto the pasture

They are very useful for monitoring purposes but we would need to do more testing for disease diagnosis.

If you're a member of our Flock and/or Herd Health Clubs you will receive unlimited in-house faecal egg counts and reduction tests. Please call the surgery for more information about our health clubs!

If you're a sheep farmer, the Animal Health & Welfare Review will have funding to carry out a worm egg count treatment test which will be very beneficial for the growing season. Please call the practice to speak to a vet to discuss how to access your funding.

*** Grass Staggers ***

With turnout fast approaching it's time to think about grass staggers (aka hypomagnesaemia or grass tetany). Grass staggers is usually seen in Spring and Autumn when levels of magnesium are low in the grass, coupled with increased demand in lactating animals (beef, dairy and sheep). The risk is further increased during times of wet weather causing a flush of grass. Affected animals may be found twitching, wobbly, seizuring or dead.

Animals suffering signs of grass staggers need emergency treatment. As always, prevention is better than cure and there are a range of supplement options available to suit individual farm circumstances during high risk periods.
