Would you treat a cow for mastitis if you knew she only had a 10% chance of curing? Do you want to know which of your high cell count cows are likely to stay high and might be worth not serving again? (It may not be the cows you think!) ๐ค๐
Surprisingly the most important factors in predicting cure are not which bacteria are causing the infection but how long the cow has been high cell count/how many cases of mastitis sheโs had etc.
Introducing the Remedy App - developed using this information to tell you how likely a case is to cure. Download the app today or otherwise come along to our meeting on 27th Feb to hear Ruth explain more.

This is the eggs today, 20 hours after the semen was added. In the video you can see different parts going round in circles and this is the sperm propelling the cells.

Finally in our whistle stop tour of key calf housing points is temperature. An important one all year round but particularly as the colder months come around.
If you want to know more about calf housing design do speak to one of the vets or there is a handy reference booklet online produced by AHDB which can be found at https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/better-calf-housing.
Continuing on from last weekโs post this weekโs calf housing focus is on ventilation and temperature control. Up first ventilationโฆ
Following on from Charlotte and Danโs meeting on farm last week looking at calf housing we thought it would be good to highlight a few key points to think about in calf shed design.
Some of these wonโt be possible to implement unless youโre putting up a new shed but lots of the key things to think about are universal to what ever type of shed youโre rearing calves in.
If you have any questions about calf housing or the #DEFRA calf housing grant do give us a call on 01363 772860 or speak to a vet out on farm.
Over the next couple of weeks keep an eye out for Mastitis tips and advice. AHDB
If you would like to attend our upcoming Calf Club Meeting, please give us a call on 01363 772 860 ๐ฎ
Efficient use of grass is something we often talk about when it comes to the milking herd, but it is just as important in the heifer rearing stage. Want to think some more about how to optimisie grazing for heifers then come along to AHDB Dairy's event on 13th September in Newton St. Cyres, kindly hosted by the Quicke family, to find out more! ๐
