IUPDATE - ITS GOOD NEWS! UPDATE PROVIDED IN COMMENTS.
Whippet Rescue UK "Norman Bates"
Norman Bates is no ordinary Whippet, he is lucky to be alive!
Firstly, Norman and Whippet Rescue UK are eternally grateful to St Peters Vets in Petersfield whose Team dedicated themselves to saving Norman's life over the weekend.
We received the news that Norman had become lost on a walk at 8.15 am on Saturday 9th November 2024 whilst our Volunteers where on the way to take him and Mabel into our care.
Norman was found later that day at around 2pm and we arranged for him to be taken to and treated as an emergency at St Peters Veterinary Hospital. At the time of his arrival, Norman was almost at end of life. Norman had lost a considerable about of blood from the degloving injury that he sustained to his paw/digits of his right front leg and he was diagnosed with Hypovolemic Shock.
It was obvious to the Team at St Peters Vets that Norman had suffered a break to his left front leg but there was uncertainty about his right front leg and the damage caused to his digits by the degloving injury. Aided by the Team at St Peters Vets, Norman fought for his life throughout the remainder of the day and Sunday whilst they treated him for Hypovolemic Shock.
By Sunday afternoon, St Peters Vets confirmed that Norman had stabilised and was strong enough to be placed under General Anaesthetic in order that they could investigate and repair the damage to his digits caused by the degloving injuring and take x-rays of both front legs.
We awaited on tenterhooks. Late Sunday evening, St Peters Vets telephoned to confirm that only Norman's left front leg was broken, that is was a clean break that they were confident could be repaired by a specialist Orthopaedic Surgeons.
However, there was still uncertainty about the degloving injury to Norman's right front digits. Whilst the Team at St Peters had worked hard to remove the damage skin and suture what they could, much would depend on whether the sutures would hold to enable the wounds to start to heal and the opinion of a specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Again, we all suffered a sleepless night whilst we awaited news. Throughout his stay at St Peters Vets, Norman had been reciprocal to their treatment of him; he seemed to know they were trying to help him and Norman responded, he wasn't ready to give up his fight.
On Monday morning St Peters advised that Norman's sutures had held and that they had found a specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon who he could be transferred to that morning. Our Volunteer dropped everything to collect him from St Peters and drive him to the Orthopaedic Surgeon, including, untacking and returning a much bemused Horse who had been ready for its morning hack to it's Stable!
We knew that Norman still had a long way to go and much would depend on the continued healing of the degloving injury and the Orthopaedic Surgeon's opinion as to whether it would be strong enough for Norman to cope with the rehabilitation of his left front leg. Again, we awaited the call that would enable us to provide an update.
A third sleepless night, the Orthopaedic Surgeon telephoned this morning (Tuesday 12th November 2024) to confirm that Norman's sutures remained intact and that the healing of the wound had improved and that surgery to the breaks to his left front leg would take place.
Norman is currently in Surgery now and we will provide another update later today when we here from the Orthopaedic Specialist. In the meantime, there is the matter of the cost of saving Norman's life. Cost of living charges, markets etc have seen Veterinary Fees almost double and our estimation that we would see very little change from £10,000.00 wasn't wrong.
The breakdown of the costs are £1.5 - £2000.00 emergency treatment, £4.500 for Surgery and a further £1 - £1.500.00 for the continued treatment of the degloving injury whilst Norman remains hospitalised for the next few days.
We are very fortunate that Norman's Foster Home has experience of dealing with major injuries and that they are about an hours drive from the Orthopaedic Surgeon.
Norman really is lucky to be alive. Please help us to raise funds for his Veterinary treatment by sharing this post. We will be setting up a Fund Raiser through the Paypal Giving Fund, it is one of few that doesn't make charges. In the meantime any donation no matter how small can be made to our Paypal account the email for much is [email protected]
Thankyou!
