Something to keep a close eye on whilst it’s so wet on walks…

As the seasons change, so does the risk of Alabama rot, a serious but rare disease affecting dogs, causing skin and kidney damage. As we enter its most prevalent months, it's crucial to recognise the signs: skin sores, fatigue, loss of appetite, and vomiting. 🍂🐕

Awareness and quick action are vital for your dog's health. Keep them clean, especially after muddy adventures, and always consult your vet if you spot any symptoms.

Be sure to share with your friends who have dogs to help spread awareness.

As Christmas approaches, it is natural to want to share the festivities with our four-legged friends; however, did you know that many of the foods we consume can be toxic if fed to our pets?

Follow Reaseheath's Vet Nursing guide to safe foods for your dog this Christmas:
✔️Turkey (boneless and skinless)
✔️Potatoes (boiled or mashed with no butter or salt)
✔️Vegetables such as carrot, parsnip, sprouts, or peas
All of the above can be fed in moderation.

❌Gravy (too salty and fatty)
❌Stuffing (onion, garlic, shallots, and leeks are all poisonous for dogs)
❌Pigs in blankets (too salty and fatty)
❌Christmas pudding and mince pies (dried fruits can cause kidney failure if eaten)
❌Chocolate (highly toxic)
❌Nuts (toxic)
The above should never be fed to your dog and should be kept out of reach.

If you are worried that your dog has eaten something that could be dangerous, then please contact your vet immediately; do not try to make your dog sick as this could make them worse.

Something to think about whilst it’s cold,

Keep those pups safe in these cold temps! Don’t let them swim or paddle in ice cold water, take care on icy surfaces and make sure you wash their paws down if they’re in contact with grit or rock salt 💙

Your interaction with your dog during fireworks - Be careful to avoid affectionate interactions such as kissing, cuddling or close physical contact during firework events as this can signal uncertainty and make your dog more anxious and fearful. If your dog is actively using their safe haven, you should not encroach their space.
It is vital though that you are there for your dog if they need you. Ensure that you are available for them, and do not ignore or reject them if they seek contact. Instead use calm verbal interactions and calm stroking.

I know I always post in hot weather but I really can’t stress enough how fatal it can be to walk dogs in this heat!!!
No dog will die from missing a walk.
I’m only offering early walks or drop ins until the weather returns to a more manageable temperature

Your dog professional will never knowingly put your dog at risk. High temperatures can be fatal for dogs, and it's not just about getting burnt paws. Heatstroke can rapidly cause organ failure in dogs, and they cannot tolerate the heat the way we can.

Dog professionals - PLEASE steal and share this graphic with your clients and audience so they know you are acting with dogs' best interests at heart.

We also have a useful blog on how to spot heatstroke on our website:

⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️ weather notice! ⚠️⚠️⚠️

As much as we are enjoying this heat it’s far too hot for midday walks. Each day i will assess the weather and decide whether to replace walks with drop ins or cut a walk short. Walks will be kept to shaded/grassy areas where possible. All dogs will be provided with fresh drinking water after walks.

Thanks
