It's ๐ช๐ฒ๐น๐๐ต๐๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐๐ฎ๐ด! It's World Dog Day!
Here are three dogs who got their English names from German:
๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐๐ต๐๐ป๐ฑ, ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ, ๐ฃ๐ผ๐ผ๐ฑ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฆก๐๐ฉ
๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ต๐๐ต๐๐ป๐ฑ literally means โbadger dogโ but you can also see how โhoundโ and โ๐๐๐ป๐ฑโ are related. These dogs, also called wiener dogs because of their shape, are used for getting into badger and/or fox burrows. In German however, โDachshundโ is not used that often and the name โ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ๐ฒ๐นโ is preferred.
A ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ gets his name from his mustache. ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ in German means โsnoutโ or โmuzzleโ, a ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ or ๐ฆ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ฎ๐๐๐ฏ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ is a mustache. We use the same name in German for the dog.
I included โpoodleโ in this list, even though it differs from the German spelling โ๐ฃ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐นโ. Itโs one of those words that have a German origin but have been changed to English spelling. The pronunciation however is basically the same.
The word โ๐ฃ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐นโ is the shortened form of โPudelhundโ and comes from the low German word โ๐ฝ๐๐ฑ๐ฒ๐น๐ปโ which means โto splash in or with waterโ. Since poodles really like playing in water, or should I say puddles ๐ณ, the name makes perfect sense.
Other dogs whose names come straight from their German names:
๐ช๐ฒ๐ถ๐บ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฟ - probably named after Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach who had this hunting dog at his Weimar court in the 19th century
๐ฆ๐ฝ๐ถ๐๐ - from the pointed (spitz) muzzle
๐๐ผ๐ฏ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ฎ๐ป๐ป - bred in the 1890s in Thuringia by a tax collector named Louis Dobermann
๐๐ผ๐
๐ฒ๐ฟ - origin of name unclear (so this German breed might have an English name)
(Large and Small) ๐ ๐ฬ๐ป๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ๐น๐ฎฬ๐ป๐ฑ๐ฒ๐ฟ - dog breed from and popular in the Mรผnster region (Mรผnsterland)
๐ฅ๐ผ๐๐๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐น๐ฒ๐ฟ - Rottweil is a city in Baden-Wรผrttemberg and the dog was very popular in that region, hence the name
๐ฃ๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐ป๐ถ๐ฎ๐ป - called Zwergspitz (dwarf spitz) in German because it was bred from the Spitz, the English probably comes from the Pomerania region (Pommern), now in north-eastern Germany and Poland, where the dog is said to have been bred
