What to do when your horse panicks!
The chips are down, the seconds are ticking away, the music is bouncing off the walls and the crowd is simultaneously holding their breath and urging you on!
Blimey that’s a lot of stress!!
Even the best horses with the best training will panic at times. How we deal with this as riders makes a hugh difference to the outcome. The difference between completing or being eliminated.
1) It is not about dominating the horse. So often I have heard this idea the horse must respect you more than he fears things. That is egotistical and completely misses a key part of horse psychology. Adding more dominance (heavy hands, whips, etc) will cause more fear and more resistance.
2) Being unprepared or avoiding stress is another common problem. It’s easy to avoid stressful situations at home and never cause a “blow-up”, but what happens when you get to something stressful? No coping mechanism established and therefore training something new rather than applying known ideas to a new situation.
3) Following your horse’s stress, they panic, you panic and the fear rises. Staying calm (easier said than done granted) and helping your horse understand the problem and offer comfort rather than force is going to get you further than adding more force and stress. We aren’t perfect we are never going to get things right 100% of the time but giving your horse the strategies to solve problems and the mechanism to understand and deal with stress is going to help, whatever the situation.
Look out for our next few demos and clinic all about helping your horse deal with scary things and stress!
