I’m absolutely loving training this wee one, though not the fastest tool in my box (yet speed will come eventually) she is certainly very bright and so eager to please. I really can’t wait to get her out for a few days this coming season, and hopefully enter her in some working test next year when she is old enough. That said today we did have to correct one mistake, and that was due to looking after my brothers pup for a few days she picked up on the habit of spitting out the dummy rather than delivering to hand. But after a couple bad retrieves, and one successful one, it all started to fall right back into place. #puppy #gundogpuppy #labradorpuppy #yellowlabradorpuppy #gundogtraining #gundogtrainer #workingdogtraining
There we have it Twigas first proper water retrieve, delivered to hand and at only 5mo. Honestly I was half expecting her to be a little older before she took the big leap, but today I accidentally threw the dummy a little too far, but after watching the older dogs for 40min and doing the odd short retrieve in shallow water, she was eager to have a go at a big girl’s retrieve herself. Honestly I had sent twiga but she was being a little hesitant and when she realised she was in deep water. At first I thought it was too far out, so I called Nugu into heel and was getting ready to line her up, but Twiga wasn’t going to let her mum steal the spot light).Just shows that puppies can learn from watching more experienced dogs, and with plenty of fun and positive reinforcement your puppy can over come any obstacle.#puppy #gundogpuppy #labradorpuppy #yellowlabradorpuppy #puppytraining #gundogtraining #gundog #gundogtrainer #workingdogs #workingdogtraining
Next step to lead training your puppy. Once the puppy has discovered the lead is not a restraint, you can move on to trying to pick the lead up every now and again then proceeding to drop it, and let the puppy drag it along. So how do you know when to drop the leash? Well there’s a 2 dead giveaway signs that tell me when to drop the lead. The first is when the puppy protests against being on the lead, this can be viewed in a number of different ways:- A) the puppy sits or stands completely still and refuses to move, B) the puppy starts jumping about twisting and turning trying to get free of the lead, and C) the puppy is actually chewing at the lead nonstop while walking (one or two nips and then letting go or holding the lead I’ll ignore). The second indicator to dropping the lead is if the puppy starts pulling on the lead, this is a great indicator especially for people with large and giant breeds, simply because it can actually help to encourage the puppy to walk on a slack lead should you choose to use a slip lead. #puppy #labrador #labradorpuppy #yellowlabradorpuppy #training #puppytraining #labradorpuppytraining #gundogpuppy #gundogpuppytraining #workingdogpuppy
“Look Boss this is how dogs should walk on a leash, see how it’s nice and slack? This means it’ll be comfortable for both of us”. The first step in getting your puppy to walk nicely on a lead is by getting the used to it, and showing them that it is not a restraint, what’s the best way to do that? Find a grassy field or even your garden so long as there’s nothing that the lead can get caught against, and just let the pup drag it along the ground for a couple days. Then once the puppy is happy to have the lead put on, you can start every so often discreetly picking it up and holding it for a few seconds before dropping it again, and each day try hold it for a little longer then the last till you can walk for 10min or so while holding the lead. #puppylife #puppytraining #workingdogpuppy #gundogpuppy #labradorpuppy #puppy #gundog #workingdog #labradorpuppytraining
This is why when you get your puppy it is very important to spend those first few weeks whilst getting puppy jabs, it is important to interact with your puppy as much as possible, in order to form a strong bond with it.What you see here is my sisters puppy Roo, since she isn’t allowed pets in her current house but is due to start a new job in Kenya, so I’m looking after until it has had its Rabbies jabs and is able to fly out to join her, however she has been visiting the puppy regularly and now puppy jabs are done started taking it to work with her, so the puppy has bonded with her and not me, and so she is refusing to follow me too far from the house where she feels safe rather then follow me into the unknown, despite her remaining siblings more then happy to follow me. If I had taken her to one of the local walks I may have had the risk of her running off and not responding to recall so she would have had to be put on a lead. However instead I decided that the puppies had a good 5min run in the field and so decided to take them home rather the stress out Roo.#puppy #puppytraining #puppytrainingadvice #labrador #labradorpuppy #labradorpuppytraining #gundog #gundogpuppy #workingdog #workingdogpuppy
Now that we have the puppy sitting nicely we can start to teach stay, again using food the trick is not trying to force a long stay, instead start small just wait half a second then let pup have its food, once you are confident she has learnt the word “stay” you can slowly increase the length of time, go from half a second to a full second to two seconds and so on. But remember progress at the puppies pace, if she is fidgeting or trying to move then go back to a shorter length of time. #Puppytraining #labradorpuppy #gundogtraining #gundogpuppy #puppytrainingadvice #puppytrainingtips
Another question I see a lot of people asking is “what age can I let my puppy off it’s leash?” The answer to me is simple! You can let him off lead when safe to do so on his very first walk, if you have bonded correctly then your puppy won’t stray far. You can also use these walks as an opportunity to practice recall, and teach the puppy to keep nice and close to you.

Not bad for nearly 9 weeks old, took her out for a toilet break which changed into a little introduction opportunity. While steadiness is really important for a Gundog, this was only her first time seeing the chickens, so I wasn’t aiming for a steady sit and watch but I encouraged it, because or though her main job will be to pick dead or wounded game I don’t want her running after the first animal she sees, and one of the best ways to do that is by introducing her to new and exciting things at an early age.Once she has had her last round of puppy jabs, I’ll also use this technique of sitting and waiting when socialising with other dogs, because I think it’s important to teach puppies while they are young that they can’t just run off and greet any dog or human they meet out and about. All other dogs and people should be treated with extreme caution, because you can never be 100% certain how they will react to your puppy.#puppy #puppylife #puppytraining #puppytrainingadvice #gundogpuppy #labradorpuppy #gundogtrainer #gundogtraining

For those saying my pup will be seriously suppressed. This is what we do most her waking moments, lots of little puzzles like this one that are fun, and can encourage behaviours I want her to have later on in life. This particular puzzle is just a piece of cardboard folded a couple of times over a treat, while it may not particularly use any skill except for demolition of the cardboard, it can help encourage the pup to use her nose to find the treat once it has fallen out. This will be a very important skill for a gundog later on, since much of their work whether it’s finding dummies in a working test and during training, or finding game during field trials and shoot days, it requires them to use their nose and hunt for scent (even a faint scent like that of an old dummy or small game like woodcock and snipe). Her actual training at the moment is limited to sit and recall whistle during meals, which probably takes up 10seconds of her time each meal, hardly more then a minute of her time each day, so for her is hardly anything. #puppylife #labrador #labradorretriever #labradorpuppy #gundog #gundogpuppy #workingdog
