Colonel Richardson had the idea for a British Dog Army and so started the War Dog School in 1914. The first recruits came entirely from Battersea, Birmingham and Liverpool Homes for Lost Dogs.

This Armistice Day we remember them, along with all the brave soldiers who served in the war. 💙

Cute puppy? Well he might look cute but this pup is displaying intense aggressive behaviour towards a member of his family and toileting all over the house. And that’s just the start of the troubles. What do you do when an adolescent dog starts biting? Call me! Watch how I work with Shelby and his family in a brand new series of It’s Me or the Dog, airing on Wednesday Nov 10th at 9pm and 9:30pm on Discovery’s REALLY channel and then after on Discovery plus UK. This is UK only for now, but clips will be shown soon on social media and will be coming to the USA soon. I’ll keep you posted.

When you get your 8 week old puppies, please keep these images in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

When you're letting your puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

WHAT YOU USE TO CLEAN🧽🪣 YOUR HOME ULTIMATELY ENDS UP INSIDE YOUR PET. CHOOSE WISELY.

Study after study shows that indoor and outdoor home chemicals such as cleaning products🧼, air fresheners🕯, fire retardants📛 treated lumber decks🪵, stain-proofing chemicals🖌, chemicals from cooking fumes🔥, and lawn pesticides 💦are contaminating our pets' bodies.

Science has noted that most of these chemicals are considered potentially mutagenic carcinogens.

Don’t panic though; this post is meant to empower you to make changes that will go a long way to protect you and your pet. The goal is to prevent these exposures from disrupting the essential functioning of the body, impacting DNA🧬, cellular membranes, and protein.

In the most famous study to date by the Environmental Working Group : "Dogs and cats were found to be contaminated with 48 of 70 industrial chemicals tested, including 43 chemicals at levels higher than those typically found in people, according to our study of plastics and food packaging chemicals, heavy metals, fire retardants, and stain-proofing chemicals in pooled samples of blood🩸 and urine from 20 dogs and 37 cats collected at a Virginia veterinary clinic.

Major gaps in our system of public health protections allow most industrial chemicals on the market with no mandatory safety testing. Chemical companies do not have to prove products are safe before they are sold, or understand how much of their chemicals end up in people, let alone pets. There are few standards that limit chemical contamination in pet food, pet toys, and other products for our companion animals. For pets as for people, the result is a body burden of complex mixtures of industrial chemicals never tested for safety. Health problems in pets span high rates of cancer in dogs and skyrocketing incidence of hyperthyroidism in cats. Genetic changes can't explain the increases in certain health problems among pets. Scientists believe that chemical exposures play a role."

In our new book, set for release in just a few weeks, The Forever Dog – “Surprising New Science to Help Your Canine Companion Live Younger, Healthier & Longer” we give you our thirteen-point checklist to follow for cleaning up your dog’s environment, as well as a ton of other strategies to help you raise the happiest, healthiest, long-lived dog possible!

WANT TO SAVE A DOG? - With over 600 million stray dogs suffering around the world, it is unsurprising to learn of how many are in urgent need of care. Around the world, vulnerable dogs of all ages are subject to harrowing mistreatment, abuse and abandonment. The stories for so many dogs have already been written, simply due to where they were born. We know this isn’t ok, and we want to change it.

The millions of dogs living on the streets around the world are no different to the loving sidekicks that we have at home. And though we would all love to open our hearts and homes to every dog who needs it, we know this just isn't possible. But we can offer these dogs a place in our hearts and get them off the streets for good. Together we can save their lives and give them the chance to live free of abuse, free of fear and free of hunger.

By sponsoring a dog, you can save a dog’s life every single month. Each update you receive will be a new dog that your sponsorship has helped. For just £10 a month, your donation can provide a lifesaving vaccination for a puppy, urgent medical attention for an adult or ongoing treatment for an elderly dog. Every new update is different, and you can be assured that your donations are going to the heart of our shelters, offering them the chance to save these dogs for good.

To show you how much we value your support, we will also send you a welcome package that includes a hand-signed certificate, thank you card and official sponsor badge! All our sponsors are able to decide if they would like to sponsor the puppy, adult or elderly dogs that we rescue. So, whether you would like to sponsor these dogs yourself, or as a gift for those nearest and dearest, we know that these dogs would like to say a very waggy thank you. https://wildatheartfoundation.org/sponsor-a-dog/ to sign up!

A clarification: Taking a young pup on an off-lead walk for miles, where it feels compelled to keep going, to me is still forced movement. That is not what I'm advocating. In this brief infographic, I'm explaining that the 5 min guideline is nuanced and has been interpreted too literally by some.

Officers in the Highlands are appealing for information after two dogs were stolen in Gairloch.

Two crossbreed American Bully style dogs were stolen – one from an address off the A832 at Gairloch and the other while it was being walked on an unnamed road close to the entrance to Gairloch Harbour.

The two dogs are both from the same property and both incidents happened a short time after each other around 7.10pm on Monday, 30 August.

It is believed that this was targeted incident, aimed at stealing these specific dogs.

Two women were assaulted at each location while the dogs were being stolen and two men involved then drove off from the area in a white Volkswagen Golf GTI.

The car was later found abandoned on Achany Place in Dingwall during the Monday evening and one of the dogs was recovered a short distance away. The other remains outstanding.

One of the men is described as being white, in his 20s with short light brown hair and wearing a black jumper and black shorts.

The other is described as being white, in his 20s with short brown hair and a slim build.

Detective Inspector Ross Hamill said: “Neither woman suffered any serious injuries during this incident, though they were both left extremely shaken.

“Our enquiries are ongoing and I would urge anyone who may be able to help to come forward. Our investigation is at an early stage but it appears this was targeted attack aimed at stealing these dogs and not a random incident.

“The vehicle is believed to have been driven on the A832 and A835 before it was abandoned in Dingwall so if you have any dashcam footage from the road on Monday evening then please get in touch.

“Anyone with information can call 101, quoting incident 3101 of 30 August, or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

ARE LAUNDRY CHEMICALS AFFECTING YOUR PETS’ SKIN & HEALTH?

If you wash your pet blankets and beds using popular fabric softeners and dryer sheets, that “just washed” fresh smell comes from chemicals called Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that can negatively impact your pets’ health (coughing, rashy, itchy pets, anyone?).

Dr. Anne Steinmann’s UW-Seattle research team found more than 25 VOCs emitted from dryer vents using these products, including well-known respiratory irritants like Acetone, Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde, but also Pentane (which causes skin rashes and upset stomach), Ethyl Acetate (on the EPA’s Hazardous Waste list; causes anemia, changes in white blood cells and can damage the liver and kidneys), Benzyl Acetate (can be absorbed through the skin and is linked to pancreas problems) and Alpha-terpineol (causes headaches and nervous system disorders).

Our pets can do without having to breathe in these chemical residues or having to lay on them, so here’s our Forever Dog Tip of the day: replace chemical-laden fabric softeners with a non-toxic DIY option!

Recipe: Mix 6 cups white vinegar with 1 cup baking soda, let it fizz. When the fizz stops, pour mixture into a large glass container with a lid. Use 1 cup per load of laundry.

We highlight all of the of home chemical risks that can negatively impact your dog’s health in the The Forever Dog book, available now for pre-order by clicking here: https://foreverdog.com/about/ -window
