Well if this isn’t proof as to why using certain tools make your dog fearful I don’t know what is. Positive training helps with engagement helps build a bond and trust and collar for something this simple should not be used look at the body language of the dog that has been trained with a e collar compared to dogs trained positively

So very true
Please keep your dogs inside today take them for a walk early morning or late at night. For safety reasons I won’t be taking any dogs for a walk past 12 today and if I feel it’s to hot then il be doing some game play and chill out instead with your dog. It’s an early start for me today to get all the doggos walks before it hits peek for the heat. Tips to keep your dogs cool
Cooling matts
Never cover your dog in a wet towel it can keep heat in
Damp your dogs down
Small swimming pool so they can splash about in
Frozen treats
Shady areas for them to lay in

Don’t be silly keep your dogs chilly
Dogs don’t have shoes
Below are some pictures of dogs paws when they have been walking on hot pavements rule of thumb I always say if you can’t hold your hand on the floor for 10seconds it’s to bloody hot for your dogs feet, I’m sick of seeing people walk dogs in the middle of the day in the centre of town. Leave them at home, hire a sitter or get a friend to help, trust me it will be cheaper in the long run then having to pay a vet to sort your dogs burnt feet and treat them for heat stroke.

Please don’t be silly with your dog in this heat some tips to help keep your doggy cool when it’s to hot
Walk early morning or late at night
Keep water fresh and topped up
Cool matts and damp towels laid on the floor
Frozen treats
Water pool for your dog to splash around in
What not to do
Give your dog ice cubes if suspected heat stroke you could cause shock to the system
Don’t place cold soaked towels on your dog they retain the heat and actually make it worse
Don’t do lots of exercise your dog when it’s hot
Stay out of the midday heat walk in the woods
Your dog does not enjoy being hot they walk with you because they have to.
Never never never leave a dog in a car or van alone when hot, I bet no one would stay more then 10min in a car with windows shut try it and find out how hot a car gets in 10min. If you’re on holiday and can’t leave the dog find a sitter to stay with them while you enjoy walking around town in hot weather.
Our dogs are not use to sudden extreme changes in temperature don’t be a idiot be a good owner do right by your dog
As for me if it’s to hot for a walk I will still come over but play games in the garden or just chill with them for the time you have booked me I will not take your dogs out if it risks there lives it’s not worth it. Enjoy the sun but leave your dogs at home

I honestly have some of the best clients around, you are not just clients you are friends people I can talk to people who appreciate what I do, your pets become apart of my world the more and more I see them the more I understand each one, the amazing characters that they are and it’s heartbreaking when I hear they are no longer here, today I’m paying tribute to a lovely fluffy soppy boy called George, an amazing dog full of love and such a big goof ball who loved boomer, here’s a small video of George

💚Veterinary Nurse Awareness Month 💚

This is Charlie performing a confidence building consult with Dylan

Charlie joined Glaven Vets as animal nursing assistant in 2007 and progressed to a qualified registered veterinary nurse in 2012.

Charlie is our canine dog friendly advocate for the practice and has been involved in educating the staff in fear free consults for our anxious doggy patients.

In 2019 Charlie completed her first canine and feline behavioural course through COAPE, this then inspired Charlie to learn more about the complex subject of canine behaviour, and started an advance canine behaviour diploma (level 4) that she passed with distinction earlier this year. This course took 2 years to complete and covered 16 modules ranging from:
The Owner Influence, Energy, Personality, Compatibility, Social Structure of the Dog,
New Understandings Examined - Dominance & Pack Structure
Hormones and Health & Diet – Their Influence on Behaviour.

She is currently completing a 13-module canine nutritional course and is due to start a level 5 certificate in canine behaviour later this year.

Charlie has successfully helped many of our clients with confidence building of their canine friends and this has helped both owners and their pets to have more relaxed consults. In some cases this has enabled vets to administer treatment or vaccinations that they previous have been unable able to give.

Charlie offers canine behavioural consults and advises clients on issues such as nutrition, pet conflict, reactive dogs, improving recall, confidence building and mental stimulation techniques tailored to different breeds.

If you feel you would benefit from her advice you can contact her on [email protected].

Ok so yes I do walk a lot of reactive dogs and it’s really not helpful when people want to make nasty remarks, I’m trying to help these dogs in situations they feel uncomfortable in with correct training and redirection it’s no easy fix but shouting and screaming when I’m trying to carry on walk with this reactive dog isn’t helpful I do always trying to walk in less busy places and give the dogs as much space as possible to prevent reaction. Some of these peoples comments as I’m walking really grate me like train that dog, put a muzzle on it, your dog needs to shut up or give it food. I’m very chilled as a person and can handle a lot of crap, it would be no good me also shouting at the person making remarks. But how about if you see a dog reacting you give it space if you can, know that, that person is dealing with a lot and they are probably already stressed just going for a walk. Some of my clients dogs are the best pups I could ask for but they just can’t handle certain situations and it’s not all to do with bad training there are many reasons for reactivity which I won’t go into detail over. Just please understand the dogs I walk are controlled on a lead and if needed will be muzzled. Thankyou
