🐾🐶‼️ Hot Weather Reminder for all Dog Owners ‼️🐶🐾
Whilst the hot weather this week is set to make many of us feel like we are on holiday. It's key to remember that our furry pets are not so accustomed to the rise in temperature 🥵
It’s very important to be aware that some factors may increase your pets risk of heatstroke. Factors such as body condition (obesity), size (large dogs or puppies) and breed (flat-faced breeds such as Bulldogs, Pugs and Persians etc).
So, here are some of the top tips for keeping your furry friends safe in the heat:
1. If in doubt, don't go out🚫- if conditions are suitable to go out on a walk – take plenty of water, shorten your usual route, pick shaded areas rather than open fields, keep them on the lead so they don't get too hot, take it slow with regular breaks for them to sniff, have a drink and cool down.
2. Watch out for hot pavements🔥– remember to check the surface before heading out. Simply hold your hand or bare foot on the floor for 5 seconds – if it’s too hot for you, it’s definitely too hot for your four-legged friend.
3. Provide plenty of water💧– hydration is key in hot weather! For owners and pets alike! Always leave plenty of fresh water down for pets at home. You should also consider taking a travel water bowl with you on a walk and stopping for regularly drinks breaks.
4. Provide plenty of shade ⛱ - be wary of heat traps at home - keep windows and doors open on the shaded side of the house where it's safe to do so to allow fresh, cool air to filter in. If you are leaving your pets at home for a short period of time, leave them in a cool, shaded room with access to plenty of water - draw the curtains, put on a fan (on a high shelf out of reach) or leave them a cool mat to help keep them from over-heating.
5. Never leave your dog in the car❌🚗... 'Not long, is too long'
6. Cut back their coat✂️- brush your dog daily to remove any loose fur that can act as an insulating layer. Consider having their coat groomed and thinned out or clipped shorter to help prevent over-heating. Some breeds of dog have a coat which isn’t suitable for clipping, so you should seek advice from your groomer.
If you are concerned your pet may be suffering from heatstroke please contact a vet practice immediately 📞
All the best & stay cool!
