Olivia our Student Nurse, was treating her dog Flossie to a nail clip as part of her Pet Health Club check. As you can see she is now very used to having them done!🐕🐾

Its snake season! 🐍

Here is what to look out for when walking your dog and what to do if anything were to happen.

Adders are the only venomous snake in the UK. Incidents with Adders are rare as they are naturally quite shy and will only attack if they feel threatened. However a bite from an Adder can be life threatening. They are most common between April and July. Adders are clearly distinguished from other snakes by a dark zigzagging line down their back. They live in open areas such as heathland, moorland and open woodland.

If you suspect an adder has bitten your dog, remain calm. Check for two small puncture wounds, swelling, or redness in the area and contact your vet immediately. Do not touch the bite wound or apply any tourniquet or dressing. Try and keep your dog calm and as still as you can and carry if possible to help prevent the venom spreading. If you are able to do so safely, take a photo of the snake from a distance to help identify it. Adders are a protected species so it is illegal to hurt or kill them.

Other symptoms can include:

🐍Severe swelling around site
🐍limping/visible pain
🐍bleeding or bruising
🐍drooling
🐍Vomiting
🐍lethargy or general weakness

Hydrotherapy day!

Happy Monday Mutts!

Today we have Misty and Emmie, who came to see us for their neutering. These two XL Bully sisters are the biggest sweethearts and always keen for a cuddle when they visit the practice. As a result they have quickly become favourites among the staff. 🐾🐶💙

Pretty please can I have a treat? 🐾

This gorgeous boy is Hendrix. He visited us earlier this week for a socialisation visit. This is where nervous patients can come and see the nurses and just get used to being in the clinic without anything big and scary happening. Nurse Siobhan simulated giving him injections, got him used to the nail clippers and gave him a guided tour of all the consult rooms. All of this is positively reinforced with lots of treats and fuss to make sure Hendrix leaves us with a positive experience.

Hendrix was so brave and was even a bit reluctant to go home at the end of his visit. 💙🐾🐶

Over the last few weeks we have seen an increased number of cases of pets being brought in with a certain type of parasite on them......We removed one from a patient and viewed it under the microscope, can you guess which parasite it is????

Clue: This parasite can transmit Lyme Disease 🔬🧐

Happy Monday Mutts!

Here we have Mr Rocco having some post op cuddles with nurse Eve. Rocco was in for his castration, but got a little anxious in the kennels whilst recovering from his anaesthetic. Once the nurses got him out for some reassuring cuddles however he was a lot more relaxed. 🐶🐾

We are so thankful for everything they do and as a lot of their work is behind closed doors clients may not know how talented these ladies are, they are skilled and trained in:

- Anaesthetics
- Taking blood samples
- Carrying out nurse clinics
- Taking x-rays
- Assisting Vets and reception
- Carrying out descale and polishes
- Lab technicians
- Offering advice and support to clients
- Assisting with emergency cases

And again the list goes on!!

Some of you may have had the pleasure of meeting our nurses, but they will be here helping care for your pets and to help and support client's as well.

As we have done appreciation posts for our Receptionists and our Nurses, we thought it was only right for you all to meet our fabulous Kennel Assistant, Sophie. Sophie has worked at Well House for over a year and half and she helps support both reception and the nurses in practice. Sophie's goal is to hopefully progress on to the Student Veterinary Nursing Apprenticeship course soon.

One of her favourite parts of the job is being able to assist in patient recovery (even if that means climbing into the kennel for cuddles!) Sophie is the crazy Spaniel lover of the team and you can bet if there is a spaniel in the practice, she will be coming to say hello with treats in her hand!

Next up we have our lovely Student Veterinary Nurse, Olivia. Olivia is now in her third and final year of her studies, which she has been completing by an apprenticeship scheme. She especially loves emergency and critical care, the adrenaline of being part of a team saving lives and nursing those patient's that are poorly is really rewarding. Olivia also finds it hard to stay away from reception, as she loves greeting all the patients as they come in and showing them that it is not scary at all!

Here is Olivia enjoying some great puppy cuddles while she was assisting the Vet, with a litter of puppies having their vaccinations and microchips. 🐾♥️🐕👩‍⚕️

Next up we have our lovely Head Veterinary Nurse (RVN), Kelly who has been working with us for 7 years.

Kelly enjoys being involved in all aspects of Veterinary Nursing, to include nurse clinics, caring for inpatients, taking x-rays, teaching students and assisting in theatre. She embraces the daily excitement and array of the cases we have in. Kelly also helps with the day to day running of the practice and supporting the nursing team. She is a clinical coach and helps with our student nurse training which she really enjoys.

At Well House we are a Training practice which means we are able to help train and support Student Veterinary Nurses, to achieve their dreams of becoming qualified.

Here is Kelly assisting with taking chest x-rays of a patient, which the Vet would be able to examine and evaluate to form a treatment plan. 👩‍⚕️🥰🐾

Next up we have our bubbly Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), Eve who has been working with us for almost 2 years now.

Eve especially loves looking after feline patients, but will not hesitate to help out with some of the more weird and wonderful exotic patients. She enjoys a mix of all areas of practice but her favourite areas are assisting in theatre with surgeries, performing x-rays, dental procedures and the occasional dance party in the prep room. ❤👩‍⚕️

Happy Caturday!

Meet Basil, who is our star pet for the month 😻

Basil was brought into us as he had sustained an unknown trauma to his face. We took x-rays of Basil which showed he had a fracture of his lower jaw. Our Vet Mark, repaired the fracture using wire to keep the jaw in the correct place and to stabilize it. Due to Basil's injuries an oesophagostomy tube was placed, (This tube enters the oesophagus from a surgical incision on the side of the neck) It allowed us and the owner to be able to feed Basil until his ability to eat has returned after his traumatic injury. We set the owners up with a feeding plan and liquid food to ensure Basil got his daily requirement.

5 weeks later the fractured had healed and the wire was able to be removed. Basil is now fully recovered and is back to being a happy boy!

May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness month (VNAM), so this gives us the opportunity to show you our amazing nursing team and what they get up to in their day to day lives in practice. The purpose of VNAM is to spread the word about the importance of the role of the veterinary nurse.

So, first up we have our lovely Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN), Siobhan. She has been part of our team for 18 months. Siobhan loves anaesthesia but she particularly loves looking after inpatients when they come in poorly. Siobhan enjoys being able to work closely with the Vets to help achieve a diagnosis and treatment plan for the sick inpatients, so she can help them fully recover and be able to go back home to their families, seeing that is the best thing about her job! ❤👩‍⚕️

Here is Siobhan assisting with stitching a wound. With the correct training and guidance from a Veterinary Surgeon, nurses are able to carry out minor surgery and we do love being giving the opportunity to use our skills and training to help care for and treat patients. 🐾🐶🐈

Oreo came in to us for a castrate. On recovery he was cared for by one of our nurses Siobhan. When rabbits are up and awake enough after their anaesthetic it is really important to try and get them to eat as soon as possible to reduce the risk of gut stasis. Oreo is being syringe fed some special yummy rabbit recovery food, which he enjoyed and ate really well. He then was given a little picnic in his kennel, which he thoroughly enjoyed munching on!
