Another cracking weekend at BIIM, so many wonderful vendors and always a pleasure to meet new faces, wonderfully organised as usual by Rachel and Jem 😁
Loads of new items in stock this week. The natural treat range has been topped up, but we’ve introduced the lightly baked range from Forthglade, in lamb and turkey flavours. These offer a great protein content, made with natural ingredients and great for dogs with sensitive stomachs. In addition, the Forthglade Christmas dinner trays are back, not to mention some new Pet Munchies varieties 🐶
We’re into the firework season now and with bonfire night tomorrow, we know a lot of people worry about the noise causing anxiety for their pets. As always, we are on hand to offer tips and advice to help keep your furry friends calm and safe 👷♂️
When it comes to smaller pets such as rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters and others - where possible - cages and enclosures should be brought into a quiet room indoors, a garage or a shed. You can also give provide extra bedding, which allows them to burrow in deeper to feel safe 🐰
If bringing these inside is not an option, you can turn them around to face a wall as opposed to the open space. Hutches and aviaries can also be covered with thick blankets, to block out the sight of fireworks and reduce the sound, but try to ensure there is enough ventilation 💨
Dogs and cats should stay inside when fireworks are being let off. It is a good idea to walk dogs earlier in the day, and blocking off cat flaps is advised to ensure anxious pets do not escape. Drawing curtains and keeping windows shut can help, and having the TV or any kind of audio on can help block the noise 📺
Dogs should always be wearing some form of ID, and you can also prepare a den. For example, a quiet corner with their bed or a pillow, alongside some toys and blankets. If your pets are pacing around and making whining noises, don’t worry too much and avoid coaxing them out if they’re looking for a corner to lay in. They’re just seeking out a safe space 🐱
Make sure to give plenty of praise. All pets react differently. Do not get angry if they need to be left home alone for a period, and you come back to find a little present on the carpet! This will only add to their stress. Never tie dogs up outside during fireworks and make sure to keep water out for them as this can help with calming 😌
We do have a few options in store for calming, such as natural herbal tablets and pet remedy sprays that can be used in areas your pets frequent. Chew toys and durable treats are also a great option as this motion releases endorphins in dogs 🦴
