January can make it feel like you need to fix everything at once - you don't!

If your puppy or young dog feels a bit more unsettled after Christmas, read through to find out how to reset gently.

You are not depriving your dog of Christmas if you don't take them to see Santa!

Over the years, Christmas events aimed directly at dogs have become increasingly popular. And although they can look fun from the outside, they are often not organised with the dog's wellbeing in mind.

These events often involve queues, close contact with strangers, excited children, costumes, flashes, loud music and very little space for a dog to move away if they feel uncomfortable. This can tip your puppy or young dog into stress and overwhelm extremely quickly!

A quiet woodland walk, some sniffing time and a cosy evening at home will do far more for emotional wellbeing than a staged photo in a crowded room.

Christmas is not a social test for your dog. It is an opportunity to make choices that protect their confidence.

You are allowed to say no to things that do not serve your dog!

What does your dog genuinely enjoy at this time of year?

Sometimes life throws you lemons.

This week has been TOUGH.

If you’ve been following on my stories, Branston has been at the specialist vets this week for treatment. Turns out he had a very painful abscess behind his eye 😢

He’s home now on heavy meds and thankfully on the mend.

But this experience has taught me several things:

1. Advocate for your dog

You know your dog better than anyone else. If your gut tells you something is wrong - stick at it. They’re counting on you to speak up.

2. Insure your dog!

This episode is likely to cost me in the region of £5000 but luckily it will be covered by my insurance company. Yes, it’s not cheap monthly but when big bills happen, it makes decision making so much easier

3. Train for vet visits

This is where I will put my hands up and say I let Branston down. I hadn’t got round to muzzle training. We hadn’t done work with a buster collar. Both of these things were additionally traumatic for him and that’s on me!

Safe to say we will have a lot of training to do to undo the last week of negative experiences 😅

Are you trying your best with your dog, but your family keep undoing all the good work you put in? 😅

I see this a lot.

The problem usually isn’t that you are inconsistent. It is that your dog gets mixed messages because the people around you respond in different ways.

Take jumping up for example. If the aim is to reduce it, your dog needs the same response from everyone. That means no eye contact, no talking and no fussing when they jump.

If one person breaks and gives your dog attention, your dog learns something different. It is a bit like saying they can jump up on some days but not others, except they have no way of knowing which days are which.

It slows progress and leaves everyone frustrated.

The good news is that you can make this easier with clear rules. When everyone follows the same plan, behaviours change much faster.

And what if someone in the family loves a cuddle and wants to keep that connection?

That can still happen, but I suggest putting a word to the action so they know when it's allowed. It would look like this:

Say "cuddle time" > Invite your dog to jump > have a cuddle > Say "all done" and get up and move away.

Over time they will learn that "cuddle time" means jumping up is ok.

Is this something you struggle with in your household? Tell me in the comments!

One of the things I love most about working with families over 90 days is the relationship that builds along the way.

I get to know the dog, of course. But I also get to know the people.

The lovely Stella officially finished her programme last month, yet her mum and I still meet for walks together.

Relationships first has always been one of my core values. It shows up in moments like this. Staying in touch. Checking in. Supporting people long after the structured sessions are finished.

It’s one of the best parts of the job. And it stays with me long after a programme ends 🩷

What would change for you if you had this level of support for you and your dog?

I'm still here 👋

I’ve been absent on social media recently. Not intentionally. I’ve just been busy juggling being a business owner, a freelancer, a mother, wife and dog parent 😅

I’m sure many of you can relate.

But…I’m back and Rewarding Choice had had a bit of a revamp.

I am very excited to widen my age bracket, and will now be supporting owners of puppies and young dogs up to 18 months old.

The reason is simple. Teenage dogs sit in a strange in between stage. You finish the early training and expect things to get easier, but life often gets harder. Their training goes backwards, confidence wobbles and owners feel stuck.

This is the gap I want to close.

Puppies grow fast. Support should not stop at twelve or sixteen weeks. You deserve help through the messy middle so you can enjoy your dog again.

So if you have a puppy or young dog under 18 months, follow along for clear, practical guidance.

OR if you want in person help with you own dog, message me on WhatsApp today!

Toilet training can make even the most patient puppy parent want to cry into their cuppa!

You've got the timer set, the treats ready, and yet...you come across ANOTHER puddle on the floor

It's not that you are doing it wrong - it's jus that a few common habits make toilet training way harder than it needs to be.

Swipe through to learn the 5 most common mistakes I see all the time (and what to do instead).

Remember: Your puppy's learning and so are you. Every little win outside is progress worth celebrating.

Which mistake have you been making? Let me know below and I can help you get back on track in the comments!

This is little Stella learning how to settle at the pub - one of the most underrated puppy skills there is.

We’d done lots of our sessions out and about at local parks and woodlands. We'd practiced walking nicely on the lead; managing emotions around dogs and people and have built a cracking recall.

But today was about something different: switching off and doing nothing!

It’s easy to think training is all about movement but learning to relax is just as important. Especially if you’d quite like to go for a coffee (or a well-earned glass of wine!) without juggling an excitable puppy under the table.

That’s one of the things I love most about 1:1 training - we get to take the learning out into the real world. We can practise what actually matters to you and your puppy, in the places you want to go together.

And honestly? The coffee and chat weren’t bad either. 💛

Does this sound like the type of training you and your puppy would enjoy? Drop me a message on WhatsApp today - let's chat!
