Blue-green algae are most commonly found in non-flowing fresh water such as lakes or ponds during the warm weather but can also occur at other times of the year. They can float on the surface of the water or be bottom dwelling.

Exposures in animals usually occur when they drink from water bodies where the algae have bloomed. Dogs are often affected when they swim in infested water bodies or groom themselves afterwards.

Although not all species are toxic, many blue-green algae produce toxins that can have effects on different body systems. Clinical signs therefore vary depending on the toxin(s) involved, but can include gastrointestinal signs, liver failure and neurological signs.

If you know or suspect that your pet has come into contact with blue-green algae, we recommend that you seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Veterinary professionals can call VPIS on 0207 3055 055.

This year, we’re celebrating !

From its early beginnings as Veterinary Nursing Awareness Day in 2004, since 2012 BVNA have been leading the campaign to raise awareness of veterinary nursing for an entire month. In recognition of this special milestone year, we’ll be releasing interviews with inspirational RVNs who have been in the profession for 20 years or more, reflecting on the progress they have been part of in this time.

Today we join BVNA Council Member, Kate Davies, as she interviews Nikki McLeod.

National Veterinary Receptionist week.
If you have been into our branch practice you will have met our wonderful receptionist Claire and lead receptionist Ceris.
Also on occasion we have had the fabulous Tomas to stand in from Cardigan to save the day, so a thank you to you Tomas.
They provide a friendly welcome to all.
It’s a hard job sometimes being frontline in a veterinary practice and we think they are brill at it!
They are also at the forefront of the running of the practice.
We would be lost without them.
So a special thanks to them both on National Veterinary Receptionist week.
(and the rest of the year too !)

Urgently seeking the owner of a young black female cat that has been brought into the surgery this morning. She was found in Crymych this morning . She has most likely been involved in a road traffic accident and has some serious injuries.

Unfortunately it’s estimated that 46% of dogs and 43% of cats are overweight! Pet Obesity can lead to serious health risks impacting quality of life and reducing life expectancy.

We are supporting the ‘PDSA’s Big Weigh In’ campaign by offering FREE weight checks with our Veterinary Nurses throughout March.

During the check we will weigh and body condition score your pet to assess if they are at ideal weight and provide tailored nutritional guidance.
