Training To Race Day
The Fossilfield training to race day was held at Overton Farm, Carluke and concluded a 2year project in which a unique coaching experience was offered to local children, young people and adults who experienced social and economic barriers and were becoming disengaged from mainstream provisions.
The project’s aims were to-
Allow affordable access to pony riding to develop necessary skills
Provision of equine enabled learning through a bespoke coaching style led by a fully qualified Race Coach who has also used this experience as part of her Level 3 training
Supported personal development to allow members to make their own informed choices so they could follow their own pathway back into their communities, education and / employment.
Preparation for this day has consisted of-
- Learning to meet the daily commitments required to maintain the highest standards of equine welfare. This was achieved by different groups throughout the day and across each week allowing for individuals to experience the dedication and commitment required . starting with 7am breakfasts and checks, morning stables, exercise lots, afternoon stables and yard duties, evening stables and setting fair before finishing with bedtime checks.
- Meeting the training needs of the horses/ponies not only for their daily exercise but as part of a long term performance goal. This was achieved through everyone being hands on at their own skill level eg walking in hand, quiet hacks, schooling sessions and more intense gallop work.
- Improving the fitness ,skill and knowledge of riders and grooms. This was achieved through our progressive learning strategy relevant to emotional literacy of the individuals.
- Learning to work effectively as part of a team. Encouraging leadership, promoting responsibility and developing resilience all achieved through the Fossilfield ethos of Respect.
- Raising funds and encouraging positive financial management
The day consisted
Growing in confidence our Level 2 riders develop key skills preparing them to ride on a gallop. Most of their training takes place in an enclosed arena where they receive both Race Coaching and Equitation instruction.

Fossilfield’s bespoke Grooms Club develops our riders to have a feel for their horse to improve the athletic performance of both Developing a sequence of movements involving a lateral movement followed with a circle develops a connection between horse and rider that allows communication of aids applied through gentle pressure and a shift in body weight as opposed to pulling and forcing the horse to submit. Thus creating a soft and supple horse who is attuned to their rider. #equestriagirls #equestrian #equestriansport
Our young jockeys show motivation by following a simple strengthening program which is crucial for developing the physical and mental stamina required to perform at their best. #youngtalent #youngathletes
