Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary

Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary has been rescuing and re-homing cats and kittens in Fife (Scotland) and beyo
(29)

Run by Sue Hancock and other volunteers, Whinnybank Cat Sanctuary has been successfully rescuing and re-homing cats and kittens since 1978. While most of the cats and kittens handed in and re-homed at Whinnybank are regular domestic pets, Sue Hancock also does a lot of work with feral cats. She gets calls from farms, hotels and other places with feral colonies that are getting out of control. Know

ing that the local council no longer traps cats, and that if they are called in, the council arrange for the colony to be indiscriminately exterminated, often leaving kittens to starve if the mother has been killed. Sue spends many hours and a small fortune on petrol, trapping the cats and getting them checked and neutered by the vet. The council often put calls on to Sue from people asking for help with feral colonies, but they are unwilling to help in any way, not even with the costs. The Cats Protection League do not do large-scale feral work, but they do sometimes help Whinnybank with a grant or donations of cat food. If a feral colony gets above 15 cats, nature is cruel and cat flu often sets in, so the vets bills can be huge. Very often a few neutered cats will be returned to the original location, ensuring that the colony will not get out of control again. If kittens are trapped at a young enough age, our kitten fosterers work hard to tame them so that they can be homed. The other adults and untameable kittens then spend the rest of their lives running free at the Sanctuary, unless we manage to find new homes for them at farms or stables. It is hard, expensive and often frustrating work but definitely worthwhile! Any donations can be made at the Whinnybank fund raising shops in Newburgh and Auchtermuchty, or by sending a cheque made payable to 'Mrs S Hancock, cat rescue account' to Whinnybank, Lumbennie Road, Newburgh KY14 6ET.

Little update from Cosmo and Mimi, I just got them a big new cat tree that is right in front of the window and they are obsessed with it. They’ve grown a lot since I got them, not sure how long they will be able to both fit together on the top bed for now they love sleeping together 🥰

It is with great regret that we wish to inform you that the Sanctuary will not be taking in any cats at the moment. We are full with mums and kittens and we need to keep the infection risk down as new born kittens are extremely vulnerable. At the moment, we have 17 kittens between five mums and two pregnant mums nearly ready to have their kittens....

Well the last two kittens that came in where riddled with fleas so off to the vets for check up and a dose of Spoton. The poor wee mites must have been so uncomfortable as the fleas soon all dropped off dead but they where left will lots of flea dirt. I brushed MARCO and Pedro thoroughly and combed as best I could but the flea dirt was so bad I had to do what I hate doing and that was give them both a bath. This was the colour of the water after bathing one kitten!!!

Poppy is a 16 year old female. She came into to us in a very poor state and was at death door. A visit to the Vet revealed that she has thyroid problem but after beginning treatment she is now a different cat and loving life. Poppy is on medication for her thyroid but takes her meds with no bother so we are looking for a nice retirement home for her where she will just give you lots of love and purrs....

Update on feral kittens

18/08/2024

Sorry no cow kittens yet. Got a call from a kind girl called Joanne to say a mum and two kittens were in a hut at the back of her work and there was a lot of seagulls with their babies too. So Sue went out today to rescue them and Joanne came along and helped Sue. A huge thank you to Joanne. We think there may have been more kittens but the seagulls may have taken them. Linda will hopefully tame this pair up.

"Lexi and Kayla are almost a year old now and loving their new home. They have been going outside since April and have been enjoying their new found freedom in the garden and surrounding fields (as we live near a farm). They never seem to venture too far and love sunbathing when the opportunity arises. They still snuggle up together at night, as well as loving cuddles from their hoomans. They are well behaved and get on well with our 8 year old son who loves them to bits. Thanks for rescuing them and allowing us to give them the home they deserve. Jonathan."

Mini is female, unsure of age but we think possibly around 10/12ish. Mini would be more settled with a home with grown up children. We would say a quiet house as Mini is a very loving cat when she trusts you. Mini will purr to her hearts content and she enjoys to be a lap cat and enjoys being pampered. Mini drools when she’s really happy too....

Morning update from Cosmo & Mimi, that was before their breakfast so they were extra loving lol - they both still get nervous at noises or sudden moves but Mimi has really started to trust me and will immediately purr and close her eyes if I hold her. She likes to play but not too often, and most importantly it has to be softly and quietly so I have to distract her brother when she starts playing otherwise he’ll ruin her fun by launching his whole body on her and roughing up whichever toy she’s playing with 😂Cosmo still doesn’t want to be held or stay on my lap, and I can tell he doesn’t trust me fully yet as I don’t get very many slow blinks, but little by little we’re making progress! He still loves pets and will purr constantly so he’s a happy boy but would rather play than cuddle! He absolutely ADORES playing and has also discovered a love for my phone because it has a string/handle attached to it so he’ll play with it and if I set it down he will grab and try to run away with it even though it’s about the same weight as him 😂 the orange feathers you see everywhere are the result of yesterday afternoon’s game, I have to take this specific toy away when I leave the room because he absolutely destroys this one lol
