This boy is just in my soul. We’ve had a thing for 3.5 years now and I’m so grateful I get to care for him.

After much deliberation, I have decided it necessary to explain the true details behind the tragic accident that happened on Monday.

I was in the woods with the dogs in my care, they were running around happily chasing each other and having much fun. Then I suddenly heard one of the dogs yelp and cry, then a second yelp; I turned to look and he had gone into flight mode, ran hard and fast and eventually ended up lost and running onto the roads. This is where he got knocked by a car and passed away.

I am now confident he was stung by wasps, because I later went to investigate and got stung myself, along with my dog.

Whilst I was hastily trying to find the lost dog,
I had some smaller, slower dogs walking with me and they were preventing me from giving the search my full concentration. So I headed back to my car which was deep under the tree canopy, I wound all the windows down on my car, put the air con on, placed them in a crate and ran back into the woods to find the dog. It wasn’t long after that, I discovered through social media that he had been knocked over and my heart sank. Whilst heading back to my car, I called the police to find out where they had taken him and deal with the horrible situation.

Unfortunately, another dog Walker/home boarder walked past my car whilst I was trying to find the dog and without consideration to the circumstances, proceeded to take photographs and slander me on social media saying that I abandon dogs in cars. This was a gross misrepresentation and didn’t take into account the mitigating circumstances, it was merely a case of damage limitation.

If it wasn’t enough to have to deal with the loss of this lovely dog that we have known for some time and built a relationship with, then have to tell the lovely owners in tears what happened, I received a barrage of criticism from a woman that didn’t even know the circumstances and what actually did happen.

It’s been a particularly painful, stressful time and I chose to avoid defending myself on social media, because it is exhausting and people enjoy a good witch hunt behind a keyboard. Instead I sent a private message to my customers that matter, explaining what actually happened. I have been bowled over by the love, support and acknowledgment of my love for all the dogs in my care.

I’m extremely grateful that this dog’s owners were so kind; they did not blame me at all and said the dog had fled from them previously when he had hurt himself out walking. I had signed permission to supervise him off lead, as he isn’t a wanderer by nature, but he did have a “low pain threshold” as described by his owners. They really are lovely people and I’m devastated that this happened in my care, but as they said, I couldn’t have predicted it or prevented it. Once a dog goes into flight mode, there is no stopping them. Especially if he was still feeling the pain of the sting and venom.

I did ask the person responsible for putting this on social media to remove it and asked her to be considerate to (if not me) the dog’s owners, but she refused. I suspect she was more engrossed in using someone else’s misfortune to promote her own business.

I’m still at war with myself over whether I should post this, because I think it unprofessional to take to social media and vent. However I can no longer bare the thought of people judging me without knowing the true facts. So at least now, you have heard the truth and can make a judgment based on the real circumstances and not the selective narrative that someone wants you to hear, that benefits them and them only.

Thank you to all my customers that really know what I’m about, how much I care and have made it clear that they have my back. Also my gorgeous supportive partner and family who has helped me through this time.
