Multi dog household: Two or more dogs can be very rewarding for both dogs and owners if they learn to live together in harmony. This doesn’t necessarily come naturally and can be dependent on hormones, breeding, emotions, and learning at impressionable ages. Puppies especially being allowed to practice bullying behaviours with resident dogs or at some day cares can have a big impact on early learning. 121 behavioural adjustment training available. Dogs do not speak English, they have their own body language to communicate.  It is up to us to learn  and understand this. Change the emotion and you will change the behaviour.

Well what can I say about this gift from a lovely friend and client 🥰🐾🎄

Christmas can be a time of stress for your dog, especially if they are fearful of strangers in the home or if their usual routine has been disrupted.
Most dogs have guarding instincts, it is perfectly natural to want to protect their resources. Chastising only contributes to the stress, accept their concern and remind them not to face their fears and retreat to their safe space and give them something to chew, lick or seek out, these are all calming behaviours to the dog and counter condition the perceived threat.

Have a safe space for your dog to retreat to if they feel overwhelmed, do not expect your dog to be accepting of the chaos that can unfold. Remind them to go to their safe space, don’t expect them to always take themselves there.

Make sure they get adequate exercise or stimulation.
Don’t expect their digestive system to cope with a roast dinner.
Keep temptations of treats left around out of reach of the dogs.

Resource guarding seems to be the root cause of many displays of aggression in dogs, especially the retrieving/working breeds. If you want to change a behaviour the emotion around that behaviour needs to change.

Resource guarding is an inherent dopamine driven, perfectly normal behaviour to the dog to survive.
In a domestic environment this can quickly get out of control from human reactions, particularly with puppies; they explore their world with their mouths and pick everything up out of curiosity .
We make that more valuable and interesting by chasing them around to retrieve the item.

Teaching the dog to not feel they need to guard their resources and to leave items unless cued to take, and to drop items on cue, prevents guarding behaviour getting out of control.

A resource to a dog can be anything they feel they cannot survive without: food, water, bedding, spaces, people!
