“Oh, she’s only doing it for the food.”
“Not getting any dinner tonight!”
“Isn’t that just bribery?”

Let’s reframe that.

Food is a primary reinforcer. It’s not manipulation—it’s motivation. It’s communication. When our dogs are learning, food is one of the clearest ways we can say: yes, you nailed that. It’s how we let them know they’re on the right track.

Yes, some dogs—like my Quinn—can still enjoy working without food in the right environment. But if I stopped using food entirely, I’d see a real dip in motivation. Why? Because we’ve built that association: when the food appears, it means you did an awesome job.

It’s no different to people. Everyone deserves to be paid for their hard work. I wouldn’t turn up to a shift at ASDA for free. But I would probably still run mantrailing sessions for nothing if I won the lottery—because I love it.

But even in the jobs we love, we still like to feel appreciated.

Imagine if a friend invited you over for dinner every week, and one day you turned up and they’d just… stopped serving dinner. You’d still enjoy the company—but it would feel confusing. A bit like false advertising.

Dogs are the same. If we’ve taught them that food means “great job,” then suddenly removing it doesn’t prove anything. It just risks frustration and confusion.

Food is a tool. It doesn’t need to be fancy. Tiny pieces of something tasty go a long way—and a wee grubber of a dog? That’s a gift! It’s often easier to work with a food-loving dog than one who’ll only chase a tennis ball.

So no, it’s not just about the food.
But let’s not pretend it doesn’t matter.

Hello everyone

I have been inundated with messages today so that's brilliant news.

I want to clarify a few things. The School for dogs won't officially be open until 1st June, the Day School maybe a couple of weeks after that as I will need to settle in.

There will be LOTS more information in the coming weeks of how it is going to work, what's available etcetera. I can say there will be half and full day options available.

Please be patient with me as this interest has blown my mind and I am incredibly grateful for all the fabulous feedback, but there is still an awful lot to do.

I will be doing regular updates so make sure you have liked and followed my page to keep updated. Alternatively If you are interested in the Day School service then please drop me an email and you will be the first to know any updates.

🐾Luca🐾

Who remembers this handsome boy? Luca had his 2nd session today and what an improvement he has made in just 3 weeks.

On first visit Luca was unable to go for a walk without being on constant alert, frightened and fearful. He had to have 2 metal leads to hold onto him. He had chewed through all previous leads.

After our first session, Luca was given some exercises to work on and mostly to avoid his triggers. In just 3 weeks he has done amazing. He has relaxed, started communicating with his human family, he walks on one lead, he walks next to his humans, he is sniffing, he relaxing he is absolutely starting to transform his walks.

Today's session was starting to bring his trigger into play. We walked Luca along past 4 triggers, he totally smashed it, he looked and returned his gaze to perfection. He wanted to look, but more importantly he was interested and not terrified. His body language was relaxed, his communication was brilliant and he didn't kick off once.

All this in just 3 weeks. Now don't get me wrong, Luca has a way to go yet, but his journey is starting with the most amazing beginning 🤩. Luca and his humans have worked so hard over the past few weeks, and he will continue to grow in confidence. The important part is to listening to him and allowing him to go at his speed.

When you have a fearful dog it can be really hard, it can feel like your alone. It can stop you going out and make dog walks a chore.

🐾Lola🐾

Today started with a home visit with this cutie pie. She is just 12 weeks and today started her work with me.

Spaniel puppies are super busy, they need so much help to channel their energy. Giving them the right activities to do helps them get started in the best way possible.

She will be joining puppy classes when she is allowed, and I can't wait to welcome her.

Had a home visit with this beautiful bouncy girl. At just over 6 months of age she has grown in confidence and needing some help.

She made progress on our first session and I look forward to our follow up session to see how she is getting on ❤️

🐾Luca🐾

Today I met this handsome boy. He has not had the best start to life so we are going to change that. Working with rescues is always tricky as we don't know what's happened to them.

Luca is really uncomfortable with going for a walk. He has been going out but he is really not enjoying it. So today we started to work on changing that.

Luca is a young dog with his whole life ahead of him, so he has really landed on his paws with his new family who are already working towards giving him a better future.

Well done Luca you have done so well today 👏
