With the hotter weather finally here with us, make sure you familiarise yourself with this evidence based advice on cold water immersion for heat stroke in dogs.

On very hot days always ensure you walk your dog in the early morning or late evening, avoiding the hottest part of the day. Elderly, poorly, overweight and flat faced breeds are especially susceptible to heat stroke so extra precautions should be taken.

And remember, no dog died from missing a walk. Don’t take any unnecessary risks! 🐾 ☀️

Is it true that if we use cold water on heat stroke pets they will go into shock?

One of the most common things we still hear is that we can only use tepid water on a pet with heat stroke, incase they get some complications like hypothermic overshoot, peripheral vasoconstriction hindering a cooling response, and cardiogenic shock...

We have heard not to use cold water in case it causes shock... this rarely happens!

But guess what? In a recent study over 26% of dogs presented with heat stroke died, with flat faced breeds making up nearly half of heat stroke cases seen in the study.

You should:

💧Get someone to call the local veterinary practice and tell them you're going to travel down with a heat stroke patient
💧Pour, hose or if possible immerse the pet in very cold water (this should obviously be done under constant supervision, ensuring the head is fully above water and immersion should not be attempted if the animal is too large, or you are unable to do so without hurting yourself)
💧NB: If using a hose pipe, make sure it has run through until cold, as they can often contain water that is extremely hot in the tubing initially
💧Do not drape in towels and leave them in situ. Keep the cold water flowing.
💧Move to a cool, shaded area
💧Prepare to transport to vets in a cold, air conditioned car

In studies they found that:

🌅International consensus from sports medicine organisations supports treating EHS with early rapid cooling by immersing the casualty in cold water.
🌅Ice-water immersion has been shown to be highly effective in exertional heat stroke, with a zero fatality rate in large case series of younger, fit patients.
🌅Hyperthermic individuals were cooled twice as fast by Cold Water Immersion as by passive recovery.
🌅No complications occurred during the treatment of three older patients with severe heat stroke were treated with cold‐water immersion.
🌅Cold water immersion (CWI) is the preferred cooling modality in EHS guidelines and the optimal method applicable to UK Service Personnel
🌅Studies suggest using either ice-water or cold-water immersion

The best intervention is PREVENTION, but if you find yourself with an animal with heat stroke, using cold water either by pouring, hosing or ideally (if safe) immersion then this may help reduce their temperature to safe levels while you transport to a veterinary practice.

Is Your Dog in Pain? Recognising the Signs of Chronic Pain in Our Furry Friends 🐾💔

Our dogs often suffer in silence, making it crucial for us to recognise the signs of chronic pain. Understanding these subtle cues can help us provide the care and comfort they deserve.

Common Signs of Chronic Pain in Dogs:

🐾 Changes in Mobility: Limping, stiffness, difficulty with stairs or getting in the car and slowing up on walks. In active or working animals, pain can manifest as changes in performance.
🐾 Behavioural Changes: Increased irritability, aggression, or withdrawal.
🐾 Altered Sleep Patterns: Restlessness or sleeping more than usual.
🐾 Excessive Licking: Frequently licking or chewing a specific area.

If you notice any of these signs, don't hesitate to consult your primary care veterinarian. Early detection of chronic pain disorders and appropriate treatment can significantly improve your dog's quality of life.

❤️ Your dog's well-being is our top priority. Let's work together to ensure they live a happy, comfortable life and get them back to doing what they love!

There have been some recent updates to the laws surrounding prescribing of veterinary medicines here in the UK

Amongst other things, it’s important to note that it is now a criminal offence for a vet to advise you to purchase a human medication for your pet. We as vets know this can be extremely frustrating but we ask for you to be understanding that we don’t have control over these decisions.

The article linked below has more info relating to other prescribing regulations so have a read should you be interested.

New laws have been published this week for vets in the U.K. and how they prescribe medications

Much of it is what we do already but if you are in the profession I can highly recommend reading this blog from Vet Help Direct which sets out the changes very clearly.

If you are a pet owner, the most important thing to note is that it will now become a criminal offence, potentially punishable by jail time, if a vet advises you to purchase human medication for your animals.

There is often some heated debate over vets prescribing, or dispensing prescriptions for, human medications and the cost difference between them and the over-the-counter versions, but it is absolutely vital to understand that we have to do it this way to remain within the law and the ensure your pet receives a safe, effective dose and receives exactly the right type of treatment.

I appreciate it can be frustrating but please don’t blame your local vet!

Support When Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye to your beloved pet is one of the hardest things any animal lover can experience. For many, the grief can feel similar to the loss of a human family member and may, at times, be overwhelming. What is Veterinary Acupuncture?

• Insertion of fine, sterile, needles into specific anatomical points across the body to produce a beneficial response
• Veterinary acupuncture dates back thousands of years
• Can only be performed on animals by a qualified veterinary surgeon
• Our acupuncture treatment is used in conjunction with conventional veterinary medicine as part of an integrative treatment approach.

How Does Veterinary Acupuncture Work?
• Acupuncture has many different mechanisms of action
• Increases endogenous opioid production
• Reduces the sensitivity of pain nerve fibres
• Modulates immune system function
• Reduces inflammation

What conditions can it be helpful for?
• Musculoskeletal & Neurological problems
• Respiratory problems
• Skin problems
• Gastrointestinal disorders

Is Acupuncture Safe for Animals?
• Acupuncture is an extremely safe form of medical treatment when administered by a trained veterinarian.
• Side effects are extremely rare, although some animals may have a worsening of their symptoms before they have an improvement, while others may be sleepy or lethargic after therapy for a day or so.
• By law, only a veterinarian can perform veterinary acupuncture.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?
• For companion animals, needle placement is virtually painless. Once in location, there should be no discomfort
• For large animals, larger needles are required. There may be mild discomfort on placement, but once in place, there should be no discomfort.
• Once the needles are in place, many animals become very relaxed and sleepy.
• Some animals may experience a tingling or numbness sensation.
