Eye Awareness Week👀

🔍Eyes are extremely sensitive and easily irritated – did you know that the cornea has around 20-40 times more nerve endings than the tooth root! And most of us know how painful tooth ache is…

🔎If you believe that your pet is suffering from eye irritation you should contact your vet for advice as irritation can be a sign of eye pain or itchiness.

Signs that may suggest that your pet is suffering from eye irritation:
• Pawing/rubbing at their eye/s
• Redness
• Squinting or excessive blinking
• Excessive tear staining
• Sticky or runny discharge
• Light sensitivity
• Swollen skin around the eyes
• Dullness or cloudiness of the eye
• Different pupil sizes

Some common reasons which may cause eye irritation in your pet:
▪︎ Allergies
▪︎ Conjunctivitis
▪︎ Foreign object in the eye
▪︎ Eyelid Abnormalities
▪︎ Trauma
▪︎ Corneal scratches/ulcers
▪︎ Irritants – smoke, shampoo etc
▪︎ Dry eye (poor tear film)

👁 Eye problems can be very painful and go from bad to worse very quickly so don’t delay in seeking advice and treatment from your vet!

Eye Awareness Week👀

🔍Careful observation of the way your pet looks and acts and what is classed as ‘normal’ for them is the first critical step for responsible pet care. Regarding eye health, any perceived changes in your pet’s eyes can be a good indication of whether or not a trip to your vet is warranted.

👀Do both eyes look like each other, are the face and head symmetrical when comparing right to left?

Useful Observations:

👁• Do they both look shiny and clear, not dull, cloudy or dry?

👁• Are the pupils the same size and shape?

👁• Is one eye squinting?

👁• Is one eye runny with watery or sticky discharge?

👁• Is the colour the same? Does one look red? Has the iris suddenly changed colour?

🩺If one eye is showing differences to the other eye, or any of the above clinical signs, please get your pet checked by your vet as soon as possible!

Meet Reggie🖤

Reggie’s story began back in January where he saw our Vet Amy and was diagnosed with Immune Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA), a severe condition where Reggie’s immune system began destroying his red blood cells.

Unfortunately, Reggie’s level of anaemia meant he required a blood transfusion from the Pet Blood Bank and needed to be transferred to our hospital. After a few days he was discharged to start a long journey of treatment with us.

Reggie and his family came to see Amy and our team every fortnight for blood tests and check ups.

We are pleased to say that 8 months later Reggie has sailed through his treatment and is now medication free.

Reggie, you are a superstar and we have loved seeing you bounce back. Thank you to Reggie’s family for all your hard work and commitment to helping us help Reggie ♥️

🐾Here is some important information about Senior Pet Health🐾

🐶An elderly pet will be less energetic, have a slower metabolism, and be more susceptible to disease. They aren’t a young puppy or kitten anymore, and you may not be able to do the same things you once did together.🐶

🐱They can be prone to obesity as their nutritional requirements change and they become less able to exercise. 🐱

📈It can be difficult for a pet to lose weight once they've gained it so prevention is key!📈

🐩It is recommend to switch them to a senior diet that contains fewer calories while still providing the nutrients they need.🐩

🐈‍⬛Some pet’s can start to lose weight and/or muscle. Often there is an underlying cause, so if you notice your pet losing weight quickly, contact us to book a consultation appointment with the vet. 🐈‍⬛

💊Arthritis and other joint diseases become a lot more common as a pet ages. Senior diets often have supplements to help joints and additional supplements can be added if required.💊

🐶You can also reduce the stress on their aching joints by giving them plenty of nice soft bedding to lay on, and helping them up and down stairs, or even not letting them go upstairs at all. Chronic arthritis can also be managed medically with drugs and physiotherapy.🐶

👁Vision tends to get worse in animals as they age, but there can also be problems, if there is any evidence of cloudiness, loss of vision, irritation, swelling, discharge or pain, it may be worth booking in for a consultation with the vet.👁

🐱You may also notice their hearing is not as good, or their ears are a bit greasy, smelly or oozy, in which case we recommend a consultation with the vet to find out why and to keep on top of treatment.🐱

🦷Elderly pet’s are also very prone to dental disease. Bad breath can indicatte an unhealthy mouth and dental problems can cause immense pain (and other health issues) so having regular dental checks is important.🦷

🩺We recommend a general check-up at least once a year, (possibly more frequently if they have any illnesses). This allows us to check for any problems, give advice on keeping them comfy, and just generally make sure everything is okay. 🩺

📞If you are worried at all or would like some advice ring us on 01325 469165.

Today is National Check the Chip day!🗓

Has your pet been microchipped? 💭

Microchipping your pet is extremely important, as it ensures they can be returned to yourself if they get lost. All cats and dogs should be chipped, and the details should be regularly updated if you ever move or get a new phone number. ⚠️

📣 Please note that all appointments are chargeable and are payable at the time.

💰 We understand times are hard, and unfortunately there is no NHS for our furry friends. Like all businesses, our costs keep rising too.

Here are 2 ways to help reduce vet bills:
📄 Insurance - to cover accidents and illnesses
💙 Healthy Pet Club - to cover preventative treatment
