Desensitizing mare to scary flag!! ๐ฌ๐ง
Desensitizing Flo to the scary flag! ๐ฌ๐ง
Flo here is a 14 y/o Dutch warmblood. And we are currently in the process of restarting her after a 4 year break.
On all accounts, sheโs doing amazing. But she can sometimes hold on to a little bit of tension.
๐So, youโve guessed it, weโre doing a whole lot of desensitizing with her.
Desensitizing horses with different stimuli helps them not only to become more brave, but also to regulate anxiety and let go of tension sooner. ๐
As you will see, sheโs a clever cookie that picks things up very easily. Such a brave girl!
Errol wearing the line
Sometimes things that look small are actually big progress!
Case in point: Errol here โwearing the lineโ
Errol is an ex racehorse and when he came to his owner Hannah, she soon found out that he was very anxious, reactive and unsure. This showed in both riding and handling and surely didnโt create the โnice relaxed horsey timeโ we are all after.
We figured longlining would help gain confidence with riding but very quickly realized he is NOT a fan of things behind his butt. Did I mention heโs an ex-racer??
We had all reaction and no brainโฆ so this is where lots of desensitazing came in. This helped not only to build his confidence overall, but also to get him used to feeling something in that area.
And look at him in our last session! Wearing the line in a calm, relaxed fashion.
We were even able to get a bit of โlungingโ in, whilst wearing a line behind his butt.
I couldnโt be more chuffed with the progress and weโll be longlining in no-time.
Gus on hack
Just a little update on Mr Gus ๐ค
Weโre out hackingโฆ and he loves it! With his ears pricked forward and a healthy sense of enthusiasm, he marches out on adventures. Braving the countryside of England like a boss. (though he is wondering what weโre doing about second breakfastโฆ and elevensies ๐).
Weโre even sticking a bit of roadwork in him, and heโa taking it all in his stride. ๐ฃ๏ธ
Well played Mr Gus! couldnโt have been more proud of him, and what we have accomplished.
A very big thanks to Tina and Daisy, our pro leads! And of course, Maggie, Gate and Cameramaster๐
Couldnโt have done it without you guys.
Just a magic moment
Just a magic moment ๐งโโ๏ธ
This never gets old to meโฆ the moment the horse chooses to be with you. No lines, no force, just willingly following because you were able to have a conversation with it. Every time, and there have been many times, itโs just magical.
Miss Tilda here used to be a brood mare, but those days seem to be overโฆ so we found her a new little job! First saddle and longline, and what a star she was! #horsesofinstagram #horsetraining #firstsaddle #transition
๐ด๐ฅ Rio and the ball! ๐ฅ๐ด
Rio is a young Dutch warmblood whoโs in for starting.
As he is a little sharp and holds on to tension, Iโm doing a lot of desensitizing with him. To make him feel more confident and to help him let go of tension sooner โบ๏ธ
Today, it was time for the ball! He was a little suspicious at first, but soon learned that we are still working together. And the ball wasnโt going to eat him ๐ฑ
Have a little look and see how the training went!
Iโm using the ball as a visual to prepare him for the rider. Because of course, Iโm inevitably going to be above him at some point. By showing him that things above him are not necessarily going to be so scary, I am preparing him for that moment.
As a bonus, he gets user to yet another stimuli in his life, and we engage his brain! I think itโs so important to make youngsters brave, and let them be proud of themselves.
Do you think your horse could benefit from some desensitizing? I can help!

โจJust some desensitizingโจ
In my opinion, a very big part of training horses (and especially youngsters) is getting them as confident as possible. I want them to feel brave and proud of themselves. This is why Iโm spending a lot of time exposing them to as many different things as I can get my hands on. I love getting creative and finding new ways to engage their brain and senses!
Playing around with obstacles and โscaryโ objects is also a great way of having fun with your horse and strengthening your bond together. If you have a spooky horse, it can also help to teach them how to think through their worries and find relaxation.
Would you like to learn how to go about it in a safe and fun way? I can help! Book a session (prices from ยฃ45) and I will come to your yard to work with you and your horse ๐คฉ
