Loading practice for Leroy today, away from his home. For all the horses that I work with in their own environment, I offer this service of a chance to practice away from home, under supervision free of charge, to use whenever. Its a great way to encourage an owner practicing both loading and journeys and gives an owner piece of mind that when they get somewhere different with their horse, with all the distractions they know they can cope, so really building the confidence in both horse and owner. Leroy was a star!
Yesterdays loader was a super sweet boy, he was a little over dramatic to begin with, just frustrated I think on not understanding there was room for him on the box, but he really turned a corner. Thankyou Jezza and Charlotte for letting me be a small part of your journey. Always great when owners send you next day videos!!
So today was first canter day for Ravina, the beautiful, sensitive filly from last weeks video....
Making sure before going to canter the first time that they are really opened out in the trot is really important to avoid any bucking. Each horse is different and we dont always do first canter in the pen, sometimes we just let them fall into it uphill on a hack as its more natural, but with Ravina being sensitive we made decision for her that she needed a pen canter to begin with.

Same horse, same session, growing in confidence.
Check out these couple of little videos of the girls helping a very sensitive filly through her first time trotting under rider.. Great work from Loes and Daphne and super to see the beautiful Ravina growing in confidence. Knowing when to push a little and apply pressure with energy and when to release that is vital learning....
I dont tend to post too much these days, often life gets in the way and im not one for blowing my own trumpet too often! There are lots of good trainers out there, but after a busy week, full with lots of super successes with some wonderful horses, ably assisted by Loes and Daphne, I thought id share these nice words from this afternoon's loading problem owner.
Grant came and worked with me and my boy today. Last year we had loads of loading issues, September he needed to be boxed to the vets for an operation and after 5 hours of getting nowhere, we ended up sedating him and lifting one hoof after the other . Stressful is an understatement, and I’m sure as much for him as me. We had “hard no” two days later when it was time to come home, this time the vet sedated him after about 20 minutes so not quite as stressful but not the answer for ongoing loading . Since then I’ve not tried and have felt very defeated and hopes of going on adventures with my pony, nowhere in sight.
Well after about 40 minutes spent with Grant, I now have a different pony…………
Enjoy your weekend folks, the sun is shining for once this summer. I might have earned a Henry Westons! ☺️
Looking for demo Horses for Cotswold show this next weekend, Saturday 6th, Sunday 7th July Cirencester GL7 2BU. Please call Grant on 07548374289 or pm me here. Thanks in advance.
Its always great to read kind words and play small part in peoples success stories.
"Had the best day out with my little boy yesterday and I can only thank you for helping us with our loading issues! We’ve been practising loads and you literally made the world of difference to him. So thank you!"
So due to Brexit time restraints we have to say goodbye to Daphne soon who has been a super yard manager and assistant on the farm.
So I'm looking for next longterm intern/assistant. Must be hard working, good confident rider capable of riding young horses, great working as part of team, easy going, independent and a good sense of humour is a must.
Great opportunity for right individual to learn and grow their horsemanship.. Accommodation on site with possibility of bringing own horse. It's a learning position with small wage, with opportunity for right person to grow into full time paid position or as a prelude to striking out on their own. I'm open for discussion on length of stay, depending on candidate etc. Please pm Grant call 07548374289 or email [email protected]
Here's a little loading video from couple of months back, only just got around to putting it together, but there are a couple of good little educational points in there that I thought are worth showing...always use a long line when loading and make sure its you moving the Horses feet and not vice versa!
We are lucky enough to have a good variety of horses in to work with. We really do love our job, so why not show you a day in our lives as horse trainers! 😁

In this video you can see the lovely young Tino going through some obstacle training.
We think it's important for starters like him to do these exercises in preparation of their ridden life. He is doing a great job and we are looking forward to working with him some more!

Today's #toptip! The ball excercise is a great simple excercise to do in preparation for a rider, for general desensitization or making sure a child's pony (or any horse) doesn't kick as a rider drops down or falls off.
It's pretty self explanatory. Have a look at the video and see what you think! Please feel free to like and share. We appreciate the support 😊

Sorry we haven't posted for few days. it's been an incredibly busy week with horses in training!
Today's #toptip is everyday use of the L shape excercise. Simply set up an L shape of 4 poles I generally use a gap between poles of just over 1m to 1.5m.
Lead your through forwards all the way through a couple of times both ways. Then leading in stopping before the bend and backing back out in a straight line. Getting your horse to listen to soft requests on the line, holding just few inches below the clip with your body facing the horse. Remember for each request to release the push back pressure as you feel your horse yield.
Once your doing this in straight line softly, lead your horse through and round the bend just a little way and repeat. Then all the way round the bend stopping at the exit with your horses back feet still inside the 2 poles around 50cm /2ft from end. Now ask your horse to back back and around the bend and out. Take your time go one step at a time and begin your turn as your horses hind feet are level with the right angle made by the inner 2 poles or just a fraction past that point. You can help your horse bend by softly bending your horses head away from direction you want your horses hind quaters to turn. Remember Rome wasn't built in a day!!
Watch Daphne in the video work with CECE one of our training horses on her first time doing an L shape.
You can set this up to practice as you walk to and from the paddock as part of your everyday routine. It's great for your horses flexibility, really helps "one sided" horses to balance and grow stronger on weak side and is great to teach horses how to balance when travelling.
Watch the step your horse makes as it rounds the corner; it's the step your horse needs to balance when travelling.
When you've masterd the L shape place 2 more poles on for a z shape so you flex both ways in one direction. Remember have fun so your horse can too!!

Today's top tip. Rotating the leg joints softly without forcibly holding the leg can be a great way to get your horse to relax for the farrier or day to day feet handling. It's great for the older stiffer horse to encourage suppleness and especially the young horse prone to snatching it's feet high. Just softly put a rotation on the foot and then release each time extending the period you hold the foot up and rotating in both directions as in video.
Make sure you take the hind leg forward first before beginning rotations so you are in the safest position then continue to rotate through to a position where you would pick the foot out as in video.
It's a simple but great way to get your horse used to their legs being handled and standing comfortably when lifted.

Hi guys, this is a little fun educational video we made on loading. Will be doing lots more of these "How to" videos going forward. But remember each horse is an individual, so what suits one might not suit another.
If anybody would like help with whatever issues your horse might be having please don't hesitate to contact me.
Please like and share if you enjoyed!
Would love any comments too...
(apart from the fact I've wintered too well, I'm working on that!! 🤣🤠)
Let me know what you think!

From remedial starter to brave companion!
Little Cruz came to us after he bucked off his owner in the early stages of his riding career. We pressed the 'reset' button and re-started this 4 year old from scratch to give him as much positive experiences as possible. A redo on a first saddle, first rider and a variety of environments really paid off.
Here's a video for your enjoyment of him absolutely nailing the obstacle course!
We wish him and his owner all the best on their future adventures together!

It's always nice to end the week with a relaxing hack! You have seen Tim before in the school when we were working on his #bucking problem. With our super star Racey in the lead, he is making wonderful #progress outdoors as well.
What are your plans for the weekend? 😁
