*** MOUNTING FROM THE GROUND; JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN, DOESN’T MEAN YOU SHOULD! ***

I can’t recall the last time I mounted any horse from the ground. And that’s how it should be. Mounting a horse from the ground is, quite frankly, unnecessary. There are many varieties of safe, cheap, portable, plastic mounting blocks. Unless you weigh about 5 stone, which, let’s face it, not many of us are even close to, you will be causing your horse discomfort at the very least. At its worst, clambering up onto your horse can result in long term back pain for your horse. Studies have shown just how much excessive pressure is caused to the withers when a rider mounts from the ground once. Just imagine the cumulative effect.

I’m anticipating a couple of “arguments” that people will come back at me with, so I’ll address those now! Yes, there’s not always a mounting block handy if you are out hacking. No excuse. Unless you are riding across the desert, or are truly in the wilderness, there is always something you can find (gate/log etc). Just keep walking until you find something suitable; great exercise for you, so it’s a win win situation 😉

I’m sure someone will point out that there are far more important things to worry about, and I’m sure I’ll be told I’m scaremongering. Yes, in the grand scheme of things, it’s not as important as getting veterinary care for your horse/feeding your horse/worming your horse (actually, let’s not open that can of 🪱 🙄😉). But surely anything we can do to make our horses more comfortable, including not mounting from the ground, matters?!

To those of you who can vault effortlessly onto a horse from the ground, you’re not welcome to join this conversation 😉😉 But you may continue to “mount” from the ground!

Don’t ever be made to feel stupid because you “can’t” mount from the ground. Those people need to polish their halos and state that even if they could, they wouldn’t want to put unnecessary strain on their poor horses’ backs. Not to mention constantly twisting the saddle tree.

In summary, just because you can mount from the ground, doesn’t mean you should. Get a leg up, or use a tall mounting block (or anything else you can find….) to mount your horse.

Photo of me mounting the only horse I probably need a 5 step block for!

Veterinary Physiotherapy by day, NAVP executive by night!

What are you up to today in your Vet Physio role? Post a pic with the hashtag - .

Last night, a few of the NAVP executive had a meeting with marketing agencies to hear their proposals. It was very informative & inspirational. We are getting closer to selecting an agency and having an amazing marketing plan in place for the year ahead. Voting will take place at another evening meeting on Thursday. Look out for the upcoming NAVP newsletter & announcements made at the AGM on the 15th March.

This morning it was an early morning tea, whilst adding to the upcoming newsletter before heading out to the canine clinic (I'm pleased to be inside today as it's snowing)!

Signs of pain in your horse or pony- our lovely creatures don’t generally misbehave because they want to, this video is a classic example!

🔹 Reluctance to go forward
🔹 Rearing/bolting/bucking
🔹 Tail swishing/ears back when ridden
🔹 Lameness
🔹 Reduced performance

Horses can display pain in lots of different ways and some are more stoic than others. This beautiful mare was referred straight to the vet for investigation where she was diagnosed with a Cruciate ligament tear. This is an incredibly rare injury in horses, we assisted her owners with physio and she joined us at Lodge Farm Rehab for a few months rehab. Delighted to say she’s doing brilliantly and constantly improving 🥰 Listen to your animals! Update on this horses case coming soon!

🌟 Class 4 Laser and RockTape to assist with Oedema 🌟

This lovely patient unfortunately banged her knee on a fence out Eventing earlier this year, she was due to compete abroad very shortly after so we utilised a couple of items in our toolbox to help nudge the healing process along before she was stood on the lorry for a longer than normal journey!

She was checked over by the fabulous veterinary team at the event and I saw her 2 days post injury, her owners had been icing the knee regularly.

We used our Class 4 Laser to help assist with inflammation and the Oedema that was present. You can see after only 4 days between the initial 2 photos the swelling starting to move down the leg and after 2 weeks it had completely gone. We also used Rock tape to help with swelling removal, especially during her long journey abroad! We love what these tools are able to help us with!

What is Veterinary Physiotherapy?

Veterinary Physiotherapy is defined as the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal and/or neurological conditions in animals. It is vitally important for our canine and equine friends to feel completely at ease and in tip top condition in order to perform to their optimum. This therefore means that, not only their feeding regime and workload is important, their body is as well. As professionals we work in conjunction with your vet, to provide the best care and attention that your animal needs.

When you decide to put your animals health into Francesca’s hands, it immediately becomes her number one priority. Having completed her Bsc Hons degree in Veterinary Physiotherapy qualifying with a 2:1 you can be assured that she will give your animal the best care and attention needed. Francesca has worked with animals all of her life, therefore valuing the relationships formed with each client and patient, believing that this goes a long way in improving their health care outcomes.

To treat your animal effectively, a number of different techniques are used: Massage, Stretching, Remedial Exercise Prescription (REP) and Electrotherapies. Upon initial treatment having gained veterinary consent, your animal will be assessed Statically (standing) and Dynamically (moving). This will allow Francesca to gain an idea of areas of strengths and weaknesses within your animal. Following this, Francesca will palpate and treat your animal according to it’s needs. This will come with advice and guidelines of how to proceed, including any exercises she believes your animal would benefit from. A follow up appointment can then be booked in.

I hope this has given you a small insight into how Francesca Page Veterinary Physiotherapy works, if you would like any more information, or we can be of any more help, please contact Francesca, she will happily answer any queries. We look forward to hearing from you!!
