We all know how frustrating it can be when you’re getting dragged down the road by your dog, and not actually being able to enjoy your walk together.
Meet the lovely Bella and Luna 🐶 now I believe when I first had the enquiry about walking these two, the title of the email was ‘Help! Unruly Beagles!’ 🤣❤️
In the first video, you can see Luna walking with a flat collar and lead, her nose down completely disengaged from me, leading the walk.
In the second video, I changed her to a slip lead which gives me a lot more control over her. The moment she walked past the ‘heal’ position, I gave her a quick pop on the lead. She is such a smart little cookie 🍪 she picked up the ‘heal’ command straight away 🥰 Using inward turns and backward recalls to keep her engaged and focused on me - see how much more she’s engaged by looking up and me, rather then nose to the floor and in front of me.
The last video is of her sister Bella. Now Bella is a typical Hound dog, with her nose constantly to the floor, and her focus a lot harder to break.
You’ll see the I had to do a lot more inward turns and backwards recalls to keep her focus more on me, rather then what’s going on around her. You’ll also see in this video towards the end where I’ll use a lead correction (pop on the lead) when she’s in the sit position and goes to walk off. I always use a break command when training, so the dog knows when they can leave. This will also encourage more focus on you, whilst other distractions are around. Her focus on me after the correction is just amazing 🤩
