‼️Gull Chicks‼️

This time of year, you may find gull chicks on the floor that are still too young to fly. The best thing to do for healthy chicks is get them back onto the roof they came from, back with their parents, together in the wild. If they are injured, please call us on 🔹0300 123 0723🔹 or bring them to your nearest vet.

Young gulls can also be placed on nearby high surfaces, such as a shed or conservatory roof. An umbrella can be used as a shield if the adults are anxious about their baby being handled. The parents will protect their chicks from predators.

If you are unsure what to do, or have any concerns, you can call us on 🔹0300 123 0723🔹or message our facebook, and we can advise you on next steps. If you don't get through first try, please try again - our wildlife team answers phones as well as looking after patients, so sometimes we may have our hands full at that moment.

What happens to my pet when they have a dental?

Lovely Honey visited us this week for a dental procedure 🦷

Firstly honey has her pre anaesthetic check, where we check all of her vitals, check her weight and an obligatory cuddle of course.

Honey then has her general anaesthetic where her medications are tailored to her weight, breed and ASA status.
Her anaesthetic is monitored by one of our experienced RVN’s.

All of our dental patients have full mouth radiographs. This is a very important stage of the dental due to 60% of the tooth being under the gum line.

With these radiographs and examination of the teeth the veterinary surgeon will then decide which teeth need to be removed, if any.

All the teeth get a good clean and you can see here Honeys before and after photos.

Honey is then woken up from her anaesthetic and recovers in the care of our kennel nurses where she is constantly monitored 🐾 until she is collected to go home that evening.

Prevention is better than cure!

Untreated high blood pressure in cats can lead to serious and irreversible damage to the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes, resulting in blindness in some cases.

By being proactive and booking your cat in for regular blood pressure checks, they could be avoiding the potentially life threatening consequences of feline hypertension.

06/05/2024

It's which is why we're spreading awareness of how important it is to know the signs of high blood pressure in your cat

Quite often, cats will show no noticeable signs of having high blood pressure. Subtle changes in behaviors can be a crucial indicator that something isn't quite
right!

Blood pressure checks are the best way to diagnose and screen for feline hypertension.

Be sure to book regular checks for your cat.

30/04/2024

Signs of feline hypertension are often invisible and unfortunately, many cats only show signs of hypertension after the disease starts to cause serious damage to their heart, brain, kidneys and eyes.

Make sure your cat is getting their blood pressure checked regularly!

Did you know that May is Feline Hypertension month?

High blood pressure in cats, also known as feline hypertension, is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs in around 1 in 5 cats over 9 years of age.

This disease is treatable with medication, but 82% of senior cats don't receive blood pressure checks.

Blood pressure checks are FREE with our nurses, call 01304 379533 to book in.

Betty visited us last week as an emergency as her owners thought she may have picked up a fish hook on the beach.
The fish hook was not in the mouth but we took an X-ray just in case.
The fish hook had made its way to her stomach! Luckily for Betty it didn’t get stuck on the way down. Unfortunately she had to have surgery to remove the hook.
Betty had her post op check today and she’s recovering very well ❤️‍🩹

☠️ Antifreeze (ethylene glycol) is extremely poisonous to cats, and it can be found in a few common places, so keep these out of reach and clean up any spills or leaks ⬇️

❄️ Car radiators
❄️ Screen wash
❄️ De-icers
❄️ Water features
❄️ Snow globes
❄️ Some radiators may still contain ethylene glycol

Look out for these signs of antifreeze poisoning ⬇️

⚠️ Vomiting
⚠️ Wobbly
⚠️ Weak / tired
⚠️ Drinking and urinating more

☎️ If you think your cat has ingested antifreeze, contact your veterinary clinic immediately for advice

Important Information 🚨

Our emergency vets have seen cases these past few weeks concerning pets who have managed to get their paws on a mince pie or two! We're urging owners to be extra vigilant when having one of these treats in the house and to ensure they're kept up high and out of reach from curious noses. This includes leaving out a mince pie and carrot for Santa and his reindeer. 🎅

Mince pies contain sultanas, raisins and currants, which can be highly toxic to our pets.

Please be aware that this applies to both dogs and cats.

If your pet ingests a mince pie or even a mouthful, contact your vet as soon as possible. Alternatively, you can visit your local out-of-hours Vets Now clinic.
