Are your tups fit and fertile? Beckie and James had a busy day last Friday fertility testing 21 tups across two farms. This involves a physical exam before collecting a semen sample which we look at under the microscope. The tups are scored in several categories before we either do or donโ€™t recommend them for breeding. Several things can cause tups to be sub or infertile, and a tup that has been fertile one year may not be the next year. Itโ€™s worth finding out now before any problems with ewes coming over or high barren rates. ๐Ÿ‘

An issue close to our hearts here in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. TB control is a complex issue and no one measure will solve it on its own, but we have certainly seen a positive impact in this region from the badger control program alongside improved farm bio-security and our usual program of testing. BCVA represents cattle vets nationwide and encompasses vets with huge experience and expertise on this topic. # British Cattle Veterinary Association - BCVA BBC BBC Derby BBC Stoke & Staffordshire TB Advisory Service

On Friday 23 August at 9pm BBC broadcast a programme about TB control;ย Brian May: The Badgers, the Farmers and Me. A full response will be issued after the weekend, until then BCVA would like to acknowledge that evidence shows badgers do transmit TB to cattle (Crispell et al 2019) and the evidence also shows that culling badgers where badgers are implicated in TB transmission to cattle does reduce TB in cattle (Downs et al 2019, Birch et al 2024).

Farm vets see too often thatย Bovine TB has huge and long-lasting effects both on the welfare of cattle and on the mental health of farmers and vets, and we were pleased to see the demonstration of compassion in this programme for the farmers and herds that have been devastated by this disease.

BCVA supports an individual evidence-based approach to TB control for each farm affected by TB and that approach includes all necessary tools for which we have scientific, peer reviewed evidence of efficacy. This includes more sensitive testing, badger culling and improved biosecurity, as well as a close working relationship between the private veterinary surgeon, the farmer and APHA to eradicate this disease from UK agriculture. We have the lowest levels of TB for 20 years. Current policy is working.

We're all feeling very fed up with this miserable weather, and I'm sure our flocks and herds are too!

Cold, wet calves are more vulnerable to disease. Even calf jackets will give next to no benefit if calves have no shelter from draughts or rain coming into the shed or donโ€™t have anywhere they can nest to keep warm.

This farm shows how you can simply and cheaply create cosy dens to keep calves warm, even in old sheds. We love this brilliant use of resources to benefit the health and growth of these calves!

02/02/2024

Unfortunately, we are starting to see cases of Schmallenberg in our early lambing flocks. The warm and wet Autumn has likely contributed to increased midge activity and spread of the virus. It's possible that we will start seeing some cases in cattle too as we progress into Spring and Summer. Milk drop may also be seen during infection in cattle.

APHA are encouraging farmers to submit suspect cases to them for diagnosis and surveillance.

As the births of Schmallenberg lambs/calves often require some form of intervention, aftercare of the mother is paramount.

Whilst there is no treatment or vaccination for this in the UK, the good news is that there is no transmission between sheep or cows. Infected animals develop an immunity to the virus and do not need to be culled on this basis alone.

We know this is a worrying time - please don't hesitate to call us with any concerns or questions.

This cow was having problems milking from one quarter. The farmer identified a 'teat pea' in the teat canal which was causing the problem. These are a build up of fibrous tissue and are thought to be caused by previous teat injury or inflammation. They can be attached inside via a stalk, or they can be free-floating.

This one was quite small and fiddly, but the cow certainly had a big let down of milk once Beckie had removed it. She will be having some pain relief and a course of antibiotic tubes to cover for secondary mastitis, but hopefully the milk will be free flowing going forwards!

We got some of our dairy farmers together last night to discuss the ever-present issue of mastitis at the Bentley Brook Inn. After a pie and chip dinner, Matt Swanborough from Hipra gave an inrteresting talk on how to optimise your mastitis control plan along with feedback on a batch of milk culture results collected from our clients. We then discussed how we as a vet practice can support our clients with mastitis control and introduced the AHDB QuarterPro mastitis tool, which we will be using to help drive our decisions on mastitis control going forwards. Thanks to all who attended, and to Hipra for supporting this very informative evening.

AHDB are continuing to host a range of webinars over the next couple of weeks focusing on helping youngstock to โ€œbreathe easyโ€ this Winter. The next one in the series is tomorrow and focuses on housing. Housing is a massive consideration when looking at reducing pneumonia, but you donโ€™t necessarily need to build a new shed to improve things.

12/11/2023

Bluetongue has been confirmed in a single (non-imported) cow in Kent. The last outbreak of the virus in the UK was in 2007, so this is worrying news. The clinical signs can really vary from severe, to non at all, with sheep often displaying more signs than cattle. Please read the guidance from APHA on what to look out for and get in touch with us if you are worried.

Weโ€™re keeping our fingers crossed that this is an isolated event, but will keep you updated with further developments.

Bluetongue has been confirmed in a single animal near Canterbury, Canterbury, Kent.

A 10km Temporary Control Zone has been put in place to minimise spread of disease and while we undertake further investigations to determine if there has been any local spread.

Livestock keepers must remain vigilant and follow the restrictions on animal movements.

More information, including how to spot and report the disease is available on GOV.UK: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bluetongue

What a brilliant turnout last night for our sheep meeting held in conjunction with ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

There were plenty of healthy discussions surrounding the industry and how AHDB uses the levy money paid by farmers during the first half of the meeting with Emma Steele. These then spilled over to the second half of the meeting where Mel talked about how working together can build a healthy, efficient and productive flock!

Thank you once again to Emma Steele from for taking the time to come and talk to us all. Also a big thank you to CEVA for sponsoring the meeting.

26/10/2023

On Tuesday night, Mel attended the AHDB Beef and Lamb meeting on Halal slaughter (in conjunction with Peak Farmers Group, NFU East Midlands events and Bagshaws LLP). The room was packed with farmers keen to learn more and dispel the myths surrounding Halal slaughter.

Here are some key facts that Mel brought away from the meeting โฌ‡๏ธโฌ‡๏ธ
๐Ÿ‘ 72% of all British lamb is Halal and 4% of all British beef is Halal
๐Ÿ‘ Only 2% of Halal lamb is non-stun
๐Ÿ‘ The key difference between Halal and conventional slaughter is that a prayer is said after stunning of the lamb before the act of slaughter is undertaken - everything else is the same
๐Ÿ‘ Extensive work is being done by AHDB Beef and Lamb to increase export of British lamb to countries across the world, especially to countries with large Muslim populations
๐Ÿ‘ Halal consumers eat more lamb than the general public

More work is being done by researchers to design an effective stunning method for cattle that will be accepted by the Muslim community as Halal. Mel really enjoyed this meeting, learned a lot and encourages others to attend meetings on this subject in the future!
