💪🏻

Chris was called to assist Alfreton Community Fire Station on the weekend to help with a 6 week old calf that had fallen into the slurry pit.

Great work from all meant that William was safely rescued and, as you can see, re-united with Mum, none the worse for wear.

Sadly, Bluetongue is not going away.

From July 1st, all of England will enter the Bluetongue restricted zone, meaning no more restrictions on animal movements for shows or sales. As movements increase from the infected areas, we can expect the disease to spread to new locations, and likely infect new populations of midges. Vaccination remains the best way to protect your herd or flock, so talk to us now about getting your name on the list for vaccine as supplies have been limited of late.

The bluetongue virus (BTV) restricted zone is being extended to cover the whole of England, ending movement restrictions for animals.

A large and enthusiastic group of farmers converged on Rough Grounds Farm today for the latest AHDB Dairy Strategic Dairy Farm meeting, focusing on youngstock health and how the Worsey family have worked with vet, Beckie and nutritionist, Dr Laura Tennant from Trouw Nutrition GB to fine tune their calf rearing system.

First, Beckie outlined the approach taken to youngstock monitoring and some of the challenges they had faced, before giving a demonstration of how thoracic ultrasound is used on the farm for both monitoring and diagnosis of respiratory disease.

After Lunch, Dr Tennant gave a very informative talk on calf nutrition, challenging everyone to find out exactly what is in the milk powder that they are feeding.

Beckie wrapped up an excellent day by showcasing the results that have been achieved since the start of the project with improved growth rates and more consistent groups of calves the key outcome noted.

We hope to revisit this topic next year and see how the heifers are performing as they grow and go on to enter the milking herd.

Hope you’re able to join us tomorrow to look in detail at the team - led, proactive approach that the Worsey family have...

Hope you’re able to join us tomorrow to look in detail at the team - led, proactive approach that the Worsey family have used in their heifer rearing 🐄

April is a busy month for meetings!

Later this month, the next AHDB Strategic Dairy Farm meeting looks at the benefit of a proactive, team-based approach to calf rearing at Rough Grounds Farm.

⛔️ Act now to protect lambs from Nematodirus! ⛔️

Information from our nearest weather station, Leek, and the SCOPS forecast shows that our area is currently high risk for Nematodirus hatching.

If lambs are eating significant amounts of grass (usually from 4-6 weeks old) and are on pastures that had lambs on it last year, they are at risk. Nematodirus can be quickly fatal to lambs, so we can't 'wait and see'. Faecal egg count don't always correlate to Nematodirus burdens at this time of year, as it is the larvea causing the damage.

Ideally, move lambs to a low-risk pasture if you have one available. If not, drench lambs with a WHITE (group 1 - BZ) wormer - dose for the heaviest in the group and make sure the gun is correctly calibrated.

A strong immunity develops over the first grazing season, so we wouldn't recommend routinely treating older animals for Nematodirus.

Please call us if you have any concerns or need any further advice. 🪱🐑

Thanks to Trevor and Ben Wright for hosting our latest on-farm meeting today.

We had an informative talk on the importance of hydration in sick animals and tips on picking the right sachets for different conditions. Chris demonstrated the correct technique for placing the drenching tube, and the group then went into the high shed for a look at the cows and some discussion on how efficiency is the watch-word at Dewdale farm - maximum output per cow with minimum fuss.

The day was rounded off by Beckie, who discussed the options for fluid therapy in calves and then rolled her sleeves up to deliver a set of twins, with the first one in full breach presentation!

Thanks to all who came, and to Ni**od Veterinary Products Ltd for sponsoring the meeting.
