Fleetwood had a nasty scrap earlier this year that resulted in the loss of this right eye. We thought weβd share how heβs doing now with you guys! Heβs not just surviving, heβs thriving πβ₯οΈ
π©βπΎ Last Saturday we finished installing the plastic cover on our polytunnel to complete the job! It looks amazing π«Ά - big shoutout to Foundation Derbyshire for supporting our cause.
π€ Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time.

Flockdown 2022/23 is over!
Flockdown 2022/2023 is over! π₯³
Our chickens and ducks are so glad to be enjoying the Spring sunshine after being in flockdown since November.
Weβre happy to see them free-roaming the farm once again and we think that they are too! π π
We still have to maintain good biosecurity by disinfecting their pens daily and ensuring wild birds cannot access their feed and water but are relieved that housing restrictions have finally been lifted!
Today is #WorldWaterDay2023 so we thought weβd share a little clip of our smallest residents, our fish! Thatβs because these guys know the importance of water π¦ π World Water Day 2023 is about accelerating change to solve the water sanitation problem by spreading awareness of the ways in which we can reduce our water use, think about the ways in which we consume it and how to manage our water for more sustainable lives π§ Although clean water isnβt an issues in our country, there are many counties where unfortunately it is very real. Thatβs why we should spread awareness and try to save water where we can π π¦ Did you know that fish tank water is great for plants? Instead of pouring the water from your water change down the drain, you can feed it to your garden πͺ΄ This will save on using the hose and benefit your plants, feeding them with rich fishy π© fertiliser π π©
Did you know Neno, our resident llama, struggles with a condition known as Megaesophagus? Check out our reel to find out more!
Thank you to the amazing Dexter Strickland Dipwcf Farrier Services for giving the boys a much needed pedicure!
Blue previously had a little infection in the white line of his hoof (the bit between the nail and the toe). However, this is quite common in donkeys as they are not built for UK weather and thankfully on this visit, has completely healed now!
As a native desert animal, donkeys struggle in the constant rain, sunshine, rain, sunshine pattern that we know so well. Infections such as these are caused when a little water and mud enter a crack in the hoof, making the white line the perfect breeding ground for infection.
Itβs an easy fix, as Dexter cut away some extra nail to allow the foot to breathe. This is similar to the condition βshelly hoofβ that our sheep Derek is susceptible to. Luckily we had some blue spray on hand to kill any remaining bacteria and Blue was happy trotting on along his way afterwards. We're delighted to know that despite the temperamental weather we've seen, there are no further issues in either of the boys' feet!
Both boys were relatively well behaved (although they werenβt happy to see that Dexter had arrived on-site β sorry, Dexter!) and are feeling absolutely fabulous!

@theislandprojectfarm learners have been researching facts about pigs for this reel! Well done, guys ππ» youβve done a great job! Some facts were surprising to us and some weβve learned ourselves from caring for our two gorgeous boys. #pigs #pigsofinstagram #piggy #farm #farmlife #farmliving #alternativeeducation #derby #nottingham #piglove
Easy peasy 3 minute boredom buster for chickens!
Thank you to everyone who participated in our raffle last year, your donations have gone towards purchasing a 16ββ TicTac wheel for Harry and Arthur π ππInstalling the wheel was a difficult task as their cage is relatively old, but we persevered and are so happy with the result! And most importantly, the boys are happy too! π¬Check out our chinchilla cage renovation!
Happy New Year from all of us here at the Haven! π
We're so excited to share with you all the exciting things we have planned for in 2023.
First off, we're building a polytunnel! Not only, will it be great for crops and produce, but it will also be a lovely space for getting out of the weather when it gets too cold or hot and will create fantastic learning opportunities for those who engage with our service.
Secondly, we've been hard at work on a video newsletter that will keep you updated on all the animals on our farm and all things Haven! The video will be released later this month.
Thank you for your continued support, whether you like and share our posts, volunteer on Sundays, or have supported our animals through donations and raffle ticket purchases. It's you that makes all the difference to our dreams.
Here are some of the animals' best bits from 2022!

The Island Community Haven CIC, in partnership with The National Lottery Community Fund, is offering the opportunity for local young people to participate in a farm-based youth club at our farm in Draycott, Derby.
Young people can join in with farm-based activities including animal feeding, basic vet care and training. The youth club will provide learning opportunities in a safe and secure environment. Sessions are delivered by friendly staff who are experienced, DBS checked and excited to welcome you to the farm!
The benefits of being around animals and nature in a therapeutic environment are well documented for improving wellbeing. We hope to inspire social intelligence, emotional resilience as well as a thirst for academic knowledge.
Wellbeing questionnaires show that young people feel they are nurtured, active, respected, responsible, included, safe, healthy and achieving whilst at the farm.
"I love being around Boris, the donkeys and the goats just because I like being with animals. It makes me feel happy and relaxed. I like helping out with the farm e.g. filling up hay nets, checking health of animals and grooming etc."
