# # # What is Blue-Green Algae?
Blue-green algae, despite its name, are bacteria found in ponds, lakes, rivers, and streams. They thrive in warm, nutrient-rich water and can form toxic "blooms" that contaminate the water, making it dangerous for dogs.
# # # Dangers to Dogs:
- **Toxins**: These algae produce harmful toxins that can be deadly to dogs.
- **Exposure**: Dogs are often exposed by swimming, playing in, or drinking contaminated water. They can also ingest toxins by licking their fur.
# # # Signs of Poisoning:
- Dribbling
- Tiredness
- Vomiting and diarrhea (possibly bloody)
- Heart and blood pressure issues
- Convulsions
- Breathing problems
- Organ failure
Symptoms can appear within minutes to days and can be life-threatening.
# # # What to Do:
- **Avoidance**: Do not let your dog swim in or drink from water that may be contaminated.
