We are running our ever popular plasma drive again this year.

Having plasma on hand during the birthing season, which is sourced from your own animals, can ensure that should they need it, cria can be provided with plasma containing antibodies specific to the challenges on your own farm.

Suitable animals to use as donors would be:
- Adult males/non-breeding females over 60kg in weight
- Relatively calm demeanour
- Ideally vaccine boosted in the 3 weeks pre-blood collection to ensure the maximum antibody levels in the plasma.

For more information and to book your time slot, please contact us at the practice on 01332 294929

APHA has released a warning for a high risk of Nematodirus battus in lambs. They have seen their first few cases of the season so it is important to be aware of the risks to your flocks.
Lambs typically present with profuse watery diarrhoea (N.B. Ewes are NOT affected), progressing to stopping suckling, depression, dehydration and occasionally death.

Prevention is based upon avoidance of pastures grazed by lambs during the previous grazing season because adult sheep are highly resistant to infection and only lambs produce significant numbers of eggs. On these pastures, larvae are likely to have survived the winter within the egg, these eggs hatch, typically en mass once the outside temperature remains above 10 degrees Celsius for a number of days. It is this mass hatching that poses the greatest risk to grazing lambs.

Moving at-risk lambs low risk pastures (i.e. pasture that was not grazed by lambs the previous spring) can help to reduce the risk of disease.
If you cannot avoid high risk pasture grazed by lambs the previous spring and decide you need to treat for nematodirus, usually with a white (1-BZ) drench.

Check that treatment is effective by taking a faecal egg count seven to 10 days after treatment. Remember, it may be necessary to treat lambs more than once depending on the spread of ages in a group and subsequent weather conditions.

For more information please give us a ring or have a look at the following websites:

FAM30 has been recently suspended from the APHA list of approved TB disinfectants, for now we do not know whether this is a permanent change or whether FAM30 will return at a later date.

For now, please be reassured that all staff are using alternative approved products when disinfecting their PPE on your farm.

It is worth remembering that for those of you required to do a BT-5 cleansing and disinfection in order to come off of TB restrictions - the use of FAM30 will now not meet these requirements.

Please see the attached link for a list of those disinfectants approved for use against TB and the relevant mixing concentrations for each product.

Find out when you must use a Defra-approved disinfectant, which product to use, and in what concentration.

Over the next few weeks we will be sharing some content created by CEVA Animal Health. These short videos focus on the importance of dairy cattle food health and how all key people involved in animal health on farm (Farmer, Vet, Foot trimmer, Mobility scorers and nutritionists - the 'Fab 5') can work together to tackle lameness on farm.

The first of these videos focuses on the benefits of regular mobility scoring on farm.

Keep an eye out over the next few weeks for further videos!

Huskvac is due to be delivered into our wholesaler on 16/2/24. This means that any clients wanting to order their required doses will need to ring towards the end of w/c 19th to place orders.

Please remember that Huskvac is very short dated - typically less than 6 weeks (sometimes shorter depending on how far into that batch you order your doses) and will therefore be distributed in several short dated batches across the vaccination season.

For this reason, we would ask that you think carefully about when you order your vaccines in relation to when you plan to use the vaccine to ensure that it doesn't go out of date before you use it (especially the second dose). It may be that you will need to order your second dose close to the time that you need it to ensure that it is within the expiry date.

If you have any questions or queries please give our vets a ring on 01332 294929.

Worming at lambing time... vet Chris Daykin tells us more about whats best for your flock:

It has been commonplace to worm ewes around lambing, as the immunity of adult ewes to gut worms temporarily relaxes at this point. This decrease in immunity leads to more worm eggs being passed out in the faeces, contaminating pasture that is then grazed by lambs, leaving them at increased risk of parasitism later in the year. The ‘periparturient rise’ in worm egg output from the ewe typically starts around 2 weeks before lambing and lasts until around 6 weeks after lambing.

To suppress worm egg output from the ewes during this period, people have traditionally either used three treatments without persistent activity, or a single long acting moxidectin 2%*.

This strategy, however, can be highly selective for anthelmintic-resistant worms.

To prevent the build-up of anthelmintic resistance, we would advise that at least 10-20% of the flock – the strongest, fittest 10-20% - be left untreated at lambing, thus reducing selection pressure for resistant worms. Ewes with a lower body condition score, or those with a lower protein diet, are more likely to benefit from worming due to their lower immunity (we know that protein status in late pregnancy is correlated with worm egg output, and this can be monitored by pre-lambing bloods). In a strong flock where the ewes are all in good body condition, it might be that much more than 10-20% can safely be left untreated. Regular worm egg counting during this risk period for the ewes is a great way to If monitor the worm burden in your flock.

As underdosing is a major risk in anthelmintic resistance, we recommend dosing accordingly to the heaviest ewe. You can find out more about this, and other SCOPS principle, at scops.org.uk.

If you have any questions or are in need of advice please don't hesitate to contact us at the practice on 01332 294929

*If moxidectin 2% has been used, it must not be used again in the same year, including for treating scab.
