Whiskers Wednesday! 😻
This is Noodles, a VERY happy and confident young lad who recently visited nurse Izzy at our Alfreton practice for his 6 month health check through his Pet Health Club plan! There was no hesitation when it came to exploring the room, Noodles quickly claimed the room as his kingdom, he was just adorable! ❤

The 6 month health check is great opportunity for our nurses to visually check over your pet between their annual vaccinations, to ensure that there isn't something they see that perhaps you may not have noticed.

Guinea pig spay day! 🩺🤎
Here we have Ethal, one of two guinea pigs our Alfreton team have spayed recently, both of whom are doing great post surgery!
These girls were 4 months of age when spayed, which is the ideal time to spay a guinea pig, due to their lower body fat percentage the ovaries and uterus are much easier to locate and remove. They also recover quicker compared to an older guinea pig as they are generally fitter and healthier.
Around 80% of entire (non-spayed) female guinea pigs will develop reproductive disorders, such as uterine cancers and ovarian cysts in later life, at around 6 years of age (on average).
By spaying them at a young age eliminates the risk of certain disorders, therefore it is recommended to have this procedure done from 4 months old.
Spaying can also help with some unwanted behaviours such as dominance/aggression towards one another.

If you are interested in having your guinea pig spayed or would like more information on this then please call your local practice to find out more. For all practice contact details visit:

What a happy chap! This here is Leo who visited our Alfreton Practice for his annual vaccination. Leo can sometimes get a little nervous during vet visits, therefore Leo was booked in Alfreton's "Cat Clinic" morning to help reduce stress levels. This is a calm and quiet time for cats to visits the practice with no worry of dogs and loud noises to disrupt them.
Leo thoroughly enjoyed the Pet Remedy-infused blankets that were placed on the consult table and he had a great time rolling around and making the most of this during his appointment! He did really well with vet Anna, a few hisses when he was unsure but overall a much happier experience than previous ones!

If you are interested in booking your cat in during a cat-only clinic then please contact either our Alfreton or Park Farm practice where these are available. Contact details for our practice can be found here:

Inpatient of the month ❤️

Nala is truly the sweetest Bullmastiff you'll ever meet. She recently visited one of our first opinion vets after her owners noticed she wasn’t acting like herself. She was experiencing a loss of appetite, discharge from her v***a, and was feeling off overall. Given these symptoms, combined with her elevated body temperature, rapid heart rate, and her history of being unspayed, the decision was made to perform a point-of-care ultrasound, which led to a diagnosis of an open pyometra.

A pyometra is a serious uterine infection that, if left untreated, can be life-threatening. Given that Nala’s pyometra was open, the clients were presented with two treatment options: medical management or surgery. However, surgery is the most recommended treatment due to medical management not always being successful. An open pyometra refers to when the cervix is open, allowing discharge to drain from the uterus, while a closed pyometra occurs when the cervix is closed, trapping the infection inside. Both are extremely dangerous and require treatment but an open pyometra at least allows the infection to drain. A closed pyometra risks the uterus rupturing which could lead to even more severe problems.

Fortunately, Nala was admitted to the hospital for immediate care. The recommended treatment was an ovariohysterectomy (surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus).

Nala did wonderfully throughout her procedure and recovered remarkably well! She received lots of supportive care during her stay at our hospital, including pain relief, antibiotics, and plenty of TLC for the next three days. After her recovery, Nala was discharged from the hospital and has been doing great at home. She’s now back to her usual happy self, much to the relief of her owners!

This beautiful lad is Henry! Henry frequently visits our Alfreton practice for routine checks and medications, however he has recently been in for a different reason. A lump had developed on Henry’s front paw, between his toes and it was decided to remove this mass before it got too large and become inoperable. Once removed, the mass was sent off for histology which came back as good news - it's not malignant, hooray! ✨
Henry recovered really well, and after a couple of weeks of rest, dressing changes and post operative checks he's been fully discharged!
The Alfreton team look forward to seeing Henry again for his general visits! He is just the best boy!

Lumps and bumps can be worrying to find on our pets but we're here to help! If you have found something on your pet that you're a little worried about then please book a consultation with a vet to have this looked at. From there, they can offer you options to investigate it further and within a good time, so you aren't worrying for long!

Even staff pets like to keep the team on their toes!

Rory, a 1-year-old Labrador with epilepsy, recently had an incident in which he ingested part of a plastic coat hanger and the end of a TV remote.

Thankfully, he did not swallow the batteries, though there was some uncertainty about the circuit board of the remote. Despite this, Rory remained in good spirits, even offering smiles to the veterinary staff.

To assess the situation further, x-rays were performed to determine the extent of the ingested materials and their location in Rory's gastrointestinal tract. After discussion between the first opinion team and the medicine team, the decision was made to attempt endoscopic removal of the pieces.

During the procedure, the team identified more than 20 small, sharp pieces of plastic. Although the pieces were smaller than anticipated, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 cm, they were too sharp to remove safely through endoscopy without risking damage to the oesophagus. As a result, the team opted to leave the pieces in place, monitoring Rory closely for any signs of complications.

To help Rory pass the plastic safely, a high-fibre diet was recommended. Foods like pumpkin were suggested to help form solid stools and facilitate the movement of material through his digestive tract. Additionally, white asparagus was advised due to its high fibre content and the way it may help encase sharp edges, reducing the risk of injury to the intestinal walls.

This case highlights the importance of having a collaborative internal team, allowing for timely second opinions and ensuring that Rory received the best care possible. We are pleased to report that Rory has remained happy and clinically well throughout the process.

Meet Harley, a super lovely therapy dog who is an 11yro Labrador Retriever cross.

Harley was presented to our Pride Park site as an emergency, after he was involved in a road traffic accident along with his owner!

Harley was triaged by our inpatient team and treated for shock. Once stabilised, diagnostic imaging was obtained to ensure there was no internal damage caused by the trauma of the crash.

Harley was such a brave boy and an absolute pleasure to look after. Miraculously, Harley was discharged the following day with only minor bruising.

We wish Harley and his family well with their recovery ♥

Here is the handsome, Rolo.

He came into the Mickleover practice recently to have his weight checked with nurse Laura for his monthly preventative flea and worm treatment.

He is only 6 months old and has gained 10kg since last month! He visits monthly to ensure he is given the correct dose of flea and worm product for his weight. Being a young dog, he is going to gain weight quickly so it is imperative to keep on top of these visits. Rolo also benefits from the social aspect of his visits and gets to develop a pawsitive relationship with the staff and associate the vets with happy visits.

His owner says how much he loves coming to the vets and gets excited to see everyone 🥰 We love seeing you too Rolo, and can't wait to see you again soon.

‼ GRAPHIC CONTENT ‼ Ear polyp removal!

This gorgeous girl is Lilli, who was seen at our Alfreton practice with a rather irritating problem! A polyp had grown within her ear, obstructing almost all of the canal and had become sore and infected. It was decided to remove this polyp at the same time as her spay procedure (to save Lilli a further anaesthetic).
The first picture shows the size of the polyp from the outside. The second photo shows the polyp once removed and my-oh-my, the Alfreton team were shocked at how large it was!! It was the length of Lilli's entire ear canal. The third photo shows the ear after the removal, a normal and healthy looking ear!
Lilli's owners have reported that since the procedure, Lilli has been extremely affectionate, giving head-boops and cuddles which she never did before! She must feel so much better to no longer have that polyp there and is recovering really well!

Lilli enjoyed not only her food but the drugs from her procedure - she got the major munchies and face dived straight into her dinner as soon as it was offered to her during recovery, hence her food moustache! We think she rocks it though, and still looks adorable for her photo!
