Etwall & Beech Vets

Etwall & Beech Vets We are a well-established, local small animal practice, located in the heart of South Derbyshire. We have two sites in the villages of Willington and Etwall.

Our practice ethos is one of traditional values with modern facilities and a forward-thinking team. We pride ourselves in treating every patient as an individual and, as we are a small friendly team, we like that our patients get to know us well! Our team of vets has a varied range of expertise from skin care to surgery and our sister practice, Sarah Smith Cardiology, has two highly trained cardio

logists (heart specialists). We have a caring and highly qualified nursing team who are involved in all aspects of our work to help minimise stress and do our best to ensure your pets have a good experience at the vets. We aim to cater for all your pet’s needs so if your animal is particularly anxious about coming to see the vet, we will happily arrange an appointment at quieter times. Our Etwall surgery has separate cat and dog waiting areas and kennels.

This week we had the beautiful Quinn in for dental treatment 🦷🪥

Dentals can get pretty messy and we try our best to send patients home as pretty as they came in 🥰

Here is our nurse, Sarah getting Quinn ready to go home! ❤️

⚠️ I’m sure lots of you are aware of the counterfeit Yumove tablets that have been identified in the last few days. These counterfeit tablets were bought from Amazon and not produced by Lintbells themselves.

Did you know it is cancer awareness week? 💡

This gorgeous girl is Harriet who came in today for her chemotherapy monitoring ultrasound scan.

She is doing really well and is currently in remission 🎉 but we will continue to do regular checks to monitor her status.

Harriet came in for a routine appointment when her cancer was picked up, she didn’t have any major symptoms. This highlights the importance of bringing in your pet for regular check ups.

Such a beautiful lady 😻

Autumn Dangers for Pets - Part 2

Our last post touched on a few dangers that are around now the seasons have changed. Here are a couple more to be aware of:

🍎Fallen fruits: many trees will start to drop their fruits in Autumn, and there are some seeds, pips and fruit stones that can make your pet unwell. The degree of illness varies depending on if they are mouldy or have started to ferment.

🌷Spring bulbs: often planted in Autumn, spring flowering bulbs can be toxic and make your pets quite unwell. The toxin varies depending on the plant, however daffodils, tulips, and spring crocus bulbs can all be toxic. Remember to keep an eye out for your pets whilst gardening!

🎃Halloween: chocolate and sweets for trick or treaters can be harmful if ingested by your pets.
But we also have strange costumes, spooky decorations, and more people around than is usual. If your pet is frightened by these kinds of situations, ensure they have a safe place in the house and could consider a sign for trick or treaters to stay away.

🐕Alabama rot: not a lot is known about this disease – it is rare but also life threatening. We don’t know what causes Alabama rot, but it is thought to be related to walking in muddy areas. It causes issues with blood vessels in the skin and kidneys, and can appear as unexplained sores or ulcers, usually on your dog’s legs or paws. To prevent risk, we recommend washing and drying dogs thoroughly after wet, muddy walks.

☎️If you have any concerns with your pet regarding any of these dangers, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01283 899898 / 01283 704768

Autumn Dangers for Pets - Part 1

Sadly, summer is very much gone and autumn is suddenly upon us – whilst we get used to muddy woodland walks, crunchy leaves and all run to get our warmer layers out of the wardrobes, it is very important to remind ourselves of some of the pet related dangers associated with this change of season.

🌰Acorns: containing a toxin called tannic acid which can make dogs sick or give them stomach issues - green acorns contain higher amounts of tannins than brown and are more toxic. If eaten regularly or in larger amounts can also cause kidney or liver failure.

🌳Conkers: causing similar issues to acorns, they contain a toxin called aesculin. Although they have a very bitter taste, if eaten in large amounts could be deadly, with smaller amounts causing stomach upsets.

🍄🍄‍🟫Wild mushrooms/fungi: coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it is difficult to distinguish between the edible mushrooms and the poisonous types.
The onset of toxicity varies greatly with some causing effects in minutes, whilst others may take days (or in rare instances) weeks to occur.

📸 If your dog eats an unknown wild mushroom, give us a call and come to us immediately. If possible bring a picture of the mushroom with you for identification purposes.

☎️If you have any concerns with your pet regarding any of these dangers, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01283 899898 / 01283 704768
