💜🍞Meet Hovis🍞💜

Hovis came in last week for us to examine his paw under anaesthetic after being unable to put weight on it.

There was an obvious swelling on the underside of his paw which was highly suspicious of a foreign body. We made an incision, flushed the area and were able to remove a sliver of woody material🪵

Hovis was very brave throughout despite having a big piece of wood in his paw! it was over 5cm long which is very impressive📏

Here is Hovis at one of his post op checks looking as handsome as ever, and yes, he is named after the bread🍞🤣

Today we had a different kind of patient at the practice🦢

This cygnet was brought to us after being found with lots of fishing wire stuck in his mouth at a local pond🎣

After taking x-rays to make sure he hadn't swallowed a hook, we were able to safely remove the wire🪝

After a quick bite to eat, some pain relief and a quick dip in a makeshift pool, he was back to his normal self in no time and has now been released back and swam off happily💜

This is the adorable Fudge🍫

She came in to see our nurse for flea and worming treatment this morning🪱

Her tail did not stop wagging the whole time, so we must rate her a 100/10 for the best impersonation of a helicopter🚁

🦴🐾 Arthritis Awareness 🐾🦴

Osteoarthritis (OA) is inflammation in joints as a result of cartilage degeneration, which causes the bones to rub together. This leads to joint pain and can interfere with mobility. Did you know arthritis affects 2 in 5 dogs & cats⁉️

There are various causes for this, including:
⭐️Obesity
⭐️Natural wear and tear
⭐️Damage/Injury to the joints
⭐️Infections or Immune-Mediated disease
⭐️Some breeds have a genetic predisposition to Osteoarthritis, for example large breeds like Labradors & German Shepherds

Whilst there is no cure for Osteoarthritis, we can help slow the progression through exercise, supportive joint supplements and diet. The main treatment for OA is pain control, there are a variety of pain medications available. We often use a multimodal approach, meaning we use different types of pain relief together to provide maximum pain control for our patients🐾

We often use Librela (Solensia in cats), which is a monthly injection given to help with arthritis. Many of our clients notice a huge difference in their pets mobility and comfort on these medications💉

If you think your pet is showing signs of arthritis and would like to know more about the treatment options available or book an appointment with a vet to discuss pain relief, please call us on 01246 23 67 91 ☎️

🦴Orthopaedic Surgery🦴

Meet Tito!

Tito's parents came to us for a 2nd opinion after they noticed he had been lame for a while which caused him to take a tumble off the bed putting him in a lot of pain.

After an initial consult with Dinu, we took x-rays which confirmed he had cruciate damage in both of his back legs. We discussed the treatment options for this with his owners.

His owners decided to operate on both legs at the same time so that he can have a faster recovery and be taken on holiday where he can go for runs along the beach which he loves🏖🏃‍♂️

Dinu then performed bilateral (both legs) TPLO-CWO and his surgeries went well. Tito has now had his post-op xrays which show his legs are healing very well and he is signed off🎉

Tito is doing brilliantly and has started venturing on longer walks. His owners have planned to take him on a holiday where he can run until his heart is content💜

Some photos of Tito during his recovery💜

🐾Do you want to know what happens behind the scenes when your pet comes in for an operation? 🐾

Follow the video of Mabel during her keyhole spay day!

Some facts about keyhole (laparoscopic) spays:
🌟Less painful than traditional spay as there is less tugging on the ovarian ligaments
🌟Less chance of bleeding at the surgical site as we cauterise/create a seal around the ovaries using advanced equipment rather than using suture material
🌟Surgical wounds are much smaller
🌟Recovery is around 3-5 days!

We also perform laparoscopic surgeries for clients at other practices💜

If you are interested and would like to know more, please call us on 01246 236791☎️ We are happy to answer any questions you may have or provide an estimate.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT PRESCRIPTION REQUESTS!

Dear Clients,

From 1st September 2023, the RCVS (our Governing body) have changed the guidance for prescribing certain prescription-only medications (POM-V's). This includes; antibiotics, antiparasitics, antifungals, controlled drugs and will also include topical preparations such as ear drops, eye drops and flea/worm medication.

The new guidance requires a physical examination on the pet every time, before we can prescribe these types of medications. Meaning that we can no longer prescribe these based on a laboratory report, photos, or phone discussions only.

For those on long term medications (not any of the medication groups listed), we are able to continue with our 3-6 month regular checks, so this should not have an impact on these patients.

You can find more information on these guidelines on https://www.rcvs.org.uk/setting-standards/advice-and-guidance/under-care-new-guidance/?fbclid=IwAR3ylB8zuqAbz5lWKzwku5nsNU6fFdzxIK76aM8AKVFF_tJk6M78y-IKLZs.

Thank you for your understanding.

*FOUND CAT*

We’ve had a young, tabby cat brought to our practice this evening with no microchip, found on the corner of Dowdeswell street and Madin street, Chesterfield.

After a general health check, we’ve advised the person who brought the cat in to put it back where they originally found it to give the cat the best chance to find its way home.

If you believe this to be your cat, please call the practice on 01246236791 for more information.

🐶Meet Freddie🐶
*warning x-ray*

Freddie was brought to us on New years Day (bank holiday) as he had been clipped by a car when out and about on a walk in the countryside🚗

He was limping on his left foreleg so we did an x-ray, which showed that he had a fracture of his distal Ulna🦴

Freddie has been coming in weekly for a cast and bandages to support his fracture whilst it heals.

At his recent x-ray, there was evidence to show his Ulna is healing🥳 We have now taken his bandage off🩹

Below is a photo of his X-ray, and a few photos of freddie rocking some of his bandage designs, made by one of our nurses, Briony🎨

He was such a good boy throughout all of his trips to see us, that we couldn't resist giving him a bravery award and lots of treats!😍

Good boy Freddie🐾

🩸Blood Donors🩸

Just like humans, our pets can need blood transfusions. First, our blood donor's and receipient's bloods are typed and cross matched. Blood is then taken from the donor and collected in a specialist blood bag to prevent damage to the blood cells. This can be done in practice, or can be done at Pet Blood Bank UK. The recipient is closely monitored during and after the transfusion, for signs of adverse reactions.

🐕In the UK, we type the blood in dogs for DEA 1 negative or positive. Most dogs in the UK will have positive type blood.

🐈‍⬛Cats have 3 main groups of blood, we test for group A, group B and group AB. With group A being the most common and group AB being rare in almost all breeds.

It is really important that we type and crossmatch all patients and donors before the transfusion to minimise the chance of a transfusion reaction.

Some of our staff pets have donated blood to some of our patients. Below we have some of our blood donor superstars⭐️ Mabel (Lab), Dexter (Golden Retriever) and Jackson (Bull Terrier).

In order for a dog to become a blood donor, they must fit within the following criteria:

🐾They must be fit and healthy
🐾They must be between 1 and 8 years old
🐾They must weigh more than 25kg🏋‍♂️
🐾They must have a good temperament (not to get stressed at the vets)
🐾They must have never travelled outside the UK and Ireland🏖
🐾They must be up to date with their vaccines💉
🐾They must not be on any medication💊

To register your dog to be a blood donor please visit https://www.petbloodbankuk.org/pet-owners/dog-blood-donation/register-your-dog/
