r many years before that. Originally based at the mill at Quayside, Norwich, we quickly became renowned across East Anglia for the high quality feed we produced. Our ability to be innovative and continually improve has always been something that we value here at Allen & Page, as a part of that process we made the decision to move the business to its current state of the art mill in Shipdham, Norfolk. The new mill has provided us with the technology to produce our feeds, with precision feed blending and in an environmentally friendly way. More than two decades ago we gained the accreditation of major food production and quality control bodies, including the Vegetarian Society, Soil Association (Organic) and ISO organisations. This set a standard for us to continue working closely to ensuring the highest quality feed is always produced. In 2009, Allen & Page was delighted to receive a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales. Looking to the future, we are always investigating new ways to improve and innovate; drawing on the experience and knowledge gained from almost a century of making horse feed.

Daisy Brucki is an Allen & Page supported rider, which she fits in alongside being a veterinary student. She checked in with us recently and had this to say:

“Oakley is my only ride at the moment, he is fed 2kg of Muscle & Focus twice daily.
Oakley is 5 and has come back into work after a long summer holiday. We are competing at some hunter trials, arena eventing, showjumping and dressage over the winter.

Nigel, from Allen & Page came over for our yard visit and I am happy to report that he was very pleased with how Oakley is looking, scoring him a 3/5 BCS. This is really great news as Oakley also weighed in at 622kg, which is fantastic.

I also had Matilda weighed and assessed, she is fed Muscle & Focus too. Matilda is a 6 y/o 16'0 hh, full TB mare. She scored a 3/5 BCS and weighed in at 554kg, Nigel was very happy with this and said she was looking really good. I am over the moon with this as I know all too well how difficult it is to maintain weight on TB's. So overall, an incredibly positive and rewarding yard visit!” – Daisy Brucki

Gubby Leech Eventing Gubby Leech is a 5* UK Event rider and an Allen & Page supported rider. Gubby chooses to feed his horses on Allen & Page horse feeds. Gubby uses Soothe & Gain for his horses who are competing at higher levels. He says that the feed works really well in terms of delivering calories and slow-release energy.

Gubby’s groom adds that Soothe & Gain soaks nicely with some chaff and helps to keep the horses hydrated too.

Bassett has three or even four feeds a day when he’s working, Danny and Holly are generally fine on two.

I’m sure you’ll agree, Gubby’s horses look fabulous on Soothe & Gain.

Does your horse have a sensitive tummy, if so we have you covered.

Soothe & Gain is only 14% combined starch and sugar making it suitable for equines prone to gastric ulcers. It is also high in Beta-Glucan containing fibres which helps to moderate the transit time through the gut, keeping the stomach fuller for longer. To help maintain a healthy stomach pH and digestive system Soothe & Gain contains Maerl (calcareous marine algae) and prebiotics and a probiotic making this a great feed for those horses and ponies with sensitive tummies or equines prone to gastric ulcers.

Speak to our friendly nutrition team to see how Soothe & Gain can benefit your horse or pony.

“We attended the Veteran Horse Society Championships this year and spoke to the Allen and Page team who gave us lots of information about Care & Gain, we have since tried this and despite Poppy also being a fussy eater, she has licked her bowl clean every night.

Poppy is a very spritely 30 year old, over the years she has required a bit more adding to her diet to ensure she gets what she needs. Poppy is still in work, both ridden and ground work, as she thrives off it. Her condition for her age and her zest for life both away at shows and at home prove that she is getting what she needs.” – Samantha Norris

“Verdi is a potentially very explosive Dutch Warmblood mare. In every way on the ground, she is nothing like a mare, but to ride she is very opinionated. Verdi is also a very good doer so doesn’t need a lot of feed.

After feeding Fast Fibre for many years, this year I changed Verdi’s feed to Veteran Light as she had started to be picky. I also decided to feed at the recommended levels so that I could eliminate the need for a vitamin and mineral supplement, and I stopped feeding chaff. I carefully monitored Verdi’s weight as I was concerned she would put on weight.

Not only have I simplified Verdi’s feeding, but I am also saving money by not having to buy chaff or supplements. In addition, Verdi has remained a stable weight and her temperament has not been affected. Thank you, Allen & Page, for a fully balanced, low-energy feed that can be fed at recommended amounts without making my horse unmanageable to ride.” – Louise Orritt

The Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies' Equine Hospital, published in the BEVA Equine Veterinary Journal a major breakthrough in the probable cause of equine grass sickness (EGS). This makes a very interesting read, and will be invaluable in further research.

The identification of the probable course of equine grass sickness (EGS) is a “game changer” in understanding of the disease – and an important step towards reducing deaths. Experts believe they have found the neurotoxin responsible for causing EGS, which has been elusive for over 100 years. R...

As horses age, their nutritional needs can become more complex, particularly if they have specific health conditions that require careful management. For example, horses and ponies prone to laminitis require extra care. Research suggests feeds with a combined starch and sugar level below 10% are recommended.

For veteran horses who remain spirited in their golden years, a low-starch, low-sugar diet is also beneficial. It reduces the quick-release energy in their diet, helping to manage excitable or fizzy behaviours.

Veteran Light has less than 10% combined starch and sugar making it suitable for horses and ponies prone to laminitis and those who can be fizzy oldies!
