Allen & Page Horse Feeds

Allen & Page Horse Feeds Allen & Page are passionate about producing top-quality horse feeds that nourish and support your horse’s health and performance.

Using non-GM ingredients, Allen & Page feeds are crafted with care to meet the unique needs of every horse. Allen & Page was first established as a limited company in 1936 and now has four generations of experience in producing quality horse feed, helping to build the business into the major national feed producer it is today. r many years before that. Originally based at the mill at Quayside, Norwich, we quickly became renowned across East Anglia for the high quality feed we produced. Our ability to be innovative and continually improve has always been something that we value here at Allen & Page, as a part of that process we made the decision to move the business to its current state of the art mill in Shipdham, Norfolk. The new mill has provided us with the technology to produce our feeds, with precision feed blending and in an environmentally friendly way. More than two decades ago we gained the accreditation of major food production and quality control bodies, including the Vegetarian Society, Soil Association (Organic) and ISO organisations. This set a standard for us to continue working closely to ensuring the highest quality feed is always produced. In 2009, Allen & Page was delighted to receive a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales. Looking to the future, we are always investigating new ways to improve and innovate; drawing on the experience and knowledge gained from almost a century of making horse feed.

What are Omega 3’s?

Omega 3 is a term used to describe a group of essential fatty acids that must be supplied in the horse’s diet, as the body cannot make them. There are three Omega 3 fatty acids:

• ALA (alpha-linolenic acid)
• EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid)
• DHA (docosahexaenoic acid)

The only natural source of Omega 3 supplied in a horse’s diet is ALA, derived from plants. The horse’s body can convert this ALA into DHA and EPA, which it can then use. In feeds, we tend to add Omega 3 using linseed and rapeseed oil.

What do they do?

Omega 3 fatty acids are important constituents of all cell membranes, producing eicosanoids essential for a cell's normal functioning.

There is research to show when supplemented into a horse’s diet EPA and DHA:

• Support skin and coat condition, especially in horses with Culicoides (midge) sensitivity
• Supports respiratory function, particularly beneficial in horses with respiratory issues
• Improve insulin sensitivity
• Boost reproductive function with increased fertility in mares and improved s***m quality in stallions
• Support joint health

Fun fact Friday! 🌿🐴

Did you know that feeding hay before turning your horse out can help manage their grass intake? By filling up on fibre rich hay first, they are less likely to gorge on the rich spring grass, reducing their sugar intake and risk of digestive upset. This can be especially beneficial for horses and ponies prone to laminitis or digestive sensitivity.

“After 6 weeks of box rest on soaked hay, Marley was introduced to Fast Fibre due to its high fibre and low sugar content. Marley is now thriving and will soon be back into ridden work.”

We can’t wait to see how he gets on in the future!

As usual, the British weather is keeping us on our toes! The combination of our recent warmer temperatures and the nationwide rain forecast for next week will create the perfect conditions for grass growth.

While owners with poor-doers will rejoice to see the return of ‘Dr Green’, those with good-doers or horses who require a low sugar diet will be considering how best to manage the spring flush. This may mean you need to adapt your horse or pony’s feeding plan to compensate for the green flush.

Don’t worry—you aren’t alone, and our friendly, multi-award winning Nutrition Team is here to help. Call us on 01362 822902 or fill out a nutrition enquiry form here: https://www.allenandpage.com/talk-to-us/need-advice/ to put a plan in place to manage those waistlines and keep healthy, happy horses through the spring!

Spring grazing 🌱

The spring grass is coming through, and we know everyone manages this differently.
How do you introduce your horse to the spring grass? 👇

1. Strip grazing for controlled access
2. Use a grazing muzzle to limit intake
3. Limit turnout time each day
4. Slowly increase turnout over time

Or do you do something different? Let us know in the comments!

Rescue pony Rocky is looking fantastic on Muscle & Focus! Here’s what his owner has to say:

“We took Rocky on as a rescue in November 2023. He came to us as a very nervous, underweight, scared pony. We instantly got Allen & Page out to weigh him and advise us on how to get him to gain weight slowly. With their expert help and advice, we put him on Muscle & Focus. This feed is perfect for him as it is low in starch, so it won't make him too excitable and it helps with developing muscle. Since having him, he's gone from a sharp, spooky pony who bucked and did not enjoy his ridden work to a focused, happy child's pony. We are planning many pony parties this year, which are all achieved with the help and support of the wonderful team at Allen & Page.”

Spring is here, and that means potential changes to your horse's diet! Here are 5 tips for spring:

🌱Ease onto the spring grass – spring grass is high in sugars and fructans which may cause digestive upset or laminitis. Slowly introduce new grazing over 2-3 weeks to help your horse adjust.

🥕Adjust feed for seasonal changes – with the warmer weather and longer days may come increased exercise for your horse, meaning their calorie needs may change. Keep an eye on their weight and adjust their feed and exercise accordingly.

💧Encourage hydration – ensure your horse is drinking enough by keeping water troughs clean and offering soaked feed.

🌾Ensure your horse is getting enough fibre and nutrients - a high-quality balanced feed can complement their forage and maintain digestive health.

🐴Prevent springtime tummy troubles – the seasonal transition can impact digestion. Consider a feed that contains a probiotic to support their digestion.
