Allen & Page Horse Feeds

Allen & Page Horse Feeds Allen & Page manufacture quality horse feeds, using the highest quality Non-GM ingredients.
(13)

Allen & Page was first established as a limited company in 1936 and now has four generations of experience in producing quality horse feed, helping to build the business into the major national feed producer it is today. Although, the Page family had been producing and selling horse feeds for many years before that. Originally based at the mill at Quayside, Norwich, we quickly became renowned acro

ss East Anglia for the high quality feed we produced. Our ability to be innovative and continually improve has always been something that we value here at Allen & Page, as a part of that process we made the decision to move the business to its current state of the art mill in Shipdham, Norfolk. The new mill has provided us with the technology to produce our feeds, with precision feed blending and in an environmentally friendly way. More than two decades ago we gained the accreditation of major food production and quality control bodies, including the Vegetarian Society, Soil Association (Organic) and ISO organisations. This set a standard for us to continue working closely to ensuring the highest quality feed is always produced. In 2009, Allen & Page was delighted to receive a Royal Warrant from HRH The Prince of Wales. Looking to the future, we are always investigating new ways to improve and innovate; drawing on the experience and knowledge gained from almost a century of making horse feed.

"Rockingham South is an ex-racehorse who wintered so poorly the first winter I had him that I swapped his feed to Compete & Condition.

He has gone from strength to strength, and he looks incredible. I would be happy with his current condition in the summer, let alone in the middle of winter.

I sing your praises to absolutely anyone who will listen and wants feed advice for their Thoroughbreds.

I can't wait to see how he gets on with that feed. His coat is like a mirror. I haven't seen a rib all winter, and his muscle tone is twice what it was this time last year. Thank god for Allen & Page." – Kara Gregory

02/09/2024

When Calm & Condition launched in 2001, it provided owners with an alternative to the high cereal content, high starch, and sugar competition feeds available on the market. Quickly becoming a very popular choice, Calm & Condition fell into the low starch and sugar bracket for competition/conditioning feeds for a long time.

As our understanding of horses’ dietary requirements has developed feeds have moved towards high fibre, very low starch and sugar content. Calm & Condition’s place in the market has shifted from our only high-calorie, low-starch feed to one better suited for horses in higher levels of work. Due to these reasons and to ensure owners select the most beneficial feed for their horses, we have decided to rename Calm & Condition to Compete & Condition- the same great feed but with a new name.

31/08/2024

"A representative of Allen & Page visited the yard where I keep my horse, Coco, to weigh and offer nutritional advice. I explained to her that Coco, who is 20 years old, is as good as gold on the ground and a perfect gentleman in the school but suffers anxiety when we go hacking and is, therefore, definitely not a happy hacker! Allen & Page looked at his existing diet and workload, pointed out the amount of molasses and alfalfa he was getting and explained how much excess energy he had as a result. She recommended changing him to a molasses-free diet. We swapped him to Allen & Page Veteran Light and a molasses-free chaff.

Two weeks later, and what a difference! He hasn't lost any spark or energy for schooling but is now super to hack out with one or two other horses. He still gets anxious going out on his own, but we can now work through our 'moments' as he's calm enough to listen and focus on what's being asked of him rather than being so fizzy that he can't think beyond panicking. This gives me much more confidence that, in the long term, he will be able to become the happy hacker I was hoping for when I got him. He enjoys being out and about, ears forward, long, relaxed stride, no longer throwing his head around and snorting. He now comes back to the yard all happy and pleased with himself.

And the most important thing is that Coco loves Allen & Page! His excitement is visible as his bowl approaches; it gets licked completely clean every time. Honestly, you wouldn't know he'd eaten out of it, and there was not a scrap left. I'm absolutely delighted with the difference using Allen & Page has made; he's a much happier, calmer horse and a happy horse makes for a happy owner!" – Louise Warren

28/08/2024

A veteran horse's diet is crucial for maintaining its health and well-being as it ages. When considering their nutritional needs, you should consider what they need to maintain a healthy weight and have enough energy for their workload.

Forage should form the basis of any equine diet, which is the same for veterans. However, older horses may have dental issues, so softer forages like partial hay replacers can be easier to chew and digest.

Key things to think about when considering what feed you should choose for your veteran:

• High-fibre feeds help maintain good digestive health. Older horses may need more calories to maintain weight, especially if they have difficulty chewing or digesting food.
• Older horses and ponies prone to laminitis benefit from feeds with less than 10% starch and sugar combined. Fibre and oil are good energy sources that are more natural for the horse to digest.
• Look for a feed that is fully balanced with vitamins and minerals. Good protein sources are essential for maintaining muscle.
• Ensure constant access to clean, fresh water. Some older horses may benefit from soaked feeds to help with hydration and digestion. Pre, pro and postbiotics can support a healthy digestive system, which is particularly important for aging horses.

By carefully considering these factors and regularly consulting with a veterinarian or equine nutritionist, you can ensure that a veteran horse remains healthy and comfortable as it ages. Before reviewing or changing your horse or pony's feed, please ask one of our knowledgeable nutritionists for further advice.

"In 2020, I had to have my horse's blood tested after he suddenly lost weight. Thank goodness the vet found nothing. After owning Bryn for 24 years, I was extremely concerned.

My equine dentist recommended I try him on Allen & Page Veteran Vitality; he said his older horses thrived on it.

Gradually, over 4 months, with careful weighing and monitoring, he gained weight, his coat looked amazing, and he was back to his old self.

Bryn is now 26, still lightly hacked, but he has plenty of energy and is generally enjoying life. I am delighted with the results, and now that his teeth are wearing, Veteran Vitality helps him not only due to less chewing but also because it is a soaked feed—it keeps him well hydrated!

I also have a 25-year-old little Welsh pony; he was my daughter's pony and is retired now. He also has Veteran Vitality, and honestly, both boys look amazing." – Nadeen Carter

16/08/2024

Everything your horse or pony eats, including grass, hay and hard feed, will contain varying degrees of starch and sugar; however, we aim to keep the diet as low as possible at under 10% combined for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

UK grass and hay contain very little starch, yet the sugar levels can vary greatly. Without analysing your hay supply, including every bale from different fields/sources, it is tough to know how much sugar your horse or pony gets from their supplementary forage, so we recommend soaking hay to reduce sugar content.

The grass is even more difficult as levels fluctuate throughout the day and according to weather, soil type, and how much it is grazed, leading to the standard recommendations of overnight turnout and avoidance of the spring and autumn flushes of grass.

Due to these difficulties, Allen & Page will only recommend our feeds that contain less than 10% combined starch and sugar for horses and ponies prone to laminitis, so alongside recommended management techniques, you can be sure you are providing your horse or pony with the lowest total starch and sugar diet possible.

Talk to our nutrition team for more information about our feeds that are less than 10% combined starch and sugar, high in fibre, and fully balanced with vitamins and minerals.

“Mr Pickles is a 22-year-old Welsh Section B 12'1hh pony.

When we first bought him three years ago, Allen & Page Fast Fibre was recommended to me. I feed this as a low-sugar alternative, which keeps him in great condition for showing, showjumping, and clinics.

Mr Pickles does not lose his coat, so it becomes very long and dense. For his comfort, he must be clipped frequently throughout the year.

When competing, Mr Pickles always gets several comments about his amazing coat and his great condition.

I do feel Mr Pickle's coat and general condition has definitely benefited from feeding Allen & Page Fast Fibre; he does not look his age or act it at all!” - Anna Garrod

Fast Fibre is ideal for good doers, as well as horses and ponies, who tend to be excitable even on low-energy feeds. It is high in fibre, with less than 10% starch and sugar combined, so it is a good choice for horses and ponies prone to laminitis.

Fast Fibre's high fibre content benefits the horse's digestion and makes it a versatile option. It can be used as a partial hay replacer, particularly useful for horses and ponies with dental issues.

For those who find it challenging to measure their horse or pony's nutrition intake, Fast Fibre offers a convenient solution. When used as a partial hay replacer, you can easily measure how much to use to replace hay. 1kg of Fast Fibre is equal to 1kg of hay, so if your horse is routinely leaving 2kg of hay and you wish to top up their intake, feed 2kg of Fast Fibre*

*there are maximum amounts of Fast Fibre we can recommend due to the vitamin and mineral content so please contact out nutrition team to discuss amounts.

Supported rider @ India Wishart shares her feeding tips.

Soaking feeds is so beneficial for keeping your horse hydrated, especially useful for horses and ponies that might not drink enough water on their own.

An additional benefit to a soaked feed is that it helps maintain proper gut motility and reduces the risk of digestive problems.

All Allen & Page feeds are fully balanced so no need to add a balancer. If your horse or pony is in hard work and sweating excessively, you may wish to add an electrolyte once the feed is soaked.

“I have fed a variety of Allen & Page products to different horses & ponies over the years & I am currently feeding Soothe & Gain to my 22-year-old mare.

This year, I have decided to try the Soothe & Gain for Fancy as she is doing a bit more work, and we are hoping to compete over the winter.

I like the fact that Allen & Page feeds contain pre and probiotics to help keep her gut healthy.

I am always getting compliments on how well Fancy looks for her age. Her coat is so shiny, too!

We recently competed at the National Veteran Championships for the first time where we were placed in several classes, including 9th in the Supreme Final out of a huge class of 26!” – Helen Evans

06/08/2024

Soothe & Gain is a high-calorie, low starch and sugar soaked feed suitable for horses and ponies prone to gastric ulcers. Its high calorie/energy level makes it ideal for those who work harder and must put on or maintain weight and condition.

The energy that Soothe & Gain supplies is from fibre and oil rather than traditional cereal-based feeds. Being whole cereal grain-free and molasses-free, it is low in starch and sugar, ideal for those who react negatively to high-starch diets.

The fibre sources in Soothe & Gain contain Beta-Glucans, which form a gel-like consistency. This helps to moderate the transit speed of food through the stomach and intestines, meaning that the stomach remains fuller for longer.

02/08/2024

“Leo is a 17.1hh chestnut gelding – ID x Warmblood. We mostly compete at Showjumping (up to 90cm) and hope to step up to BS soon.

I bought Leo as a 6-year-old who’d had 4/5 homes in a very short time. He came to me as a very nervous, head-shy, untrusting, and sad horse. In the beginning, he was, at times, dangerous, and when anything upset him, he would become very reactive. Over the past 4 years, I have learned patience on a level I never knew existed, and there have been a lot of tears…..

I have tried quite a lot of different feeds over the years. Leo is very sensitive to starch and sugar, and because he needs quite a lot of work to keep on top of his ‘nervous energy,’ providing enough energy without the starch and sugar has been challenging.

Karen from Allen & Page visited the yard at the end of 2022. After discussing Leo, she suggested Allen & Page Muscle & Focus. Muscle & Focus has been a game changer. He never gets lit up on it, and his energy levels, as well as his overall body shape and condition, have improved massively. I will never be feeding Leo anything else other than Muscle & Focus. Leo is in tip-top condition, very happy, and much more focused.

I have ridden and owned horses for over 40 years, and Leo has been the most challenging, quirky, and spooky horse I have owned. I have never had a connection with a horse like I have with Leo, and the patience, love, and loyalty to Leo have paid off with a little bit of help from Muscle & Focus along the way.” – Rachel Bourne

Our Story

Allen & Page was first established as a limited company in 1936 and now has four generations of experience in producing quality horse feed, helping to build the business into the major national feed producer it is today. Although, the Page family had been producing and selling horse feeds for many years before that. Originally based at the mill at Quayside, Norwich, we quickly became renowned across East Anglia for the high quality feed we produced.
