Despite the lifting of covid restrictions today, I shall be continuing to ask people to wear face masks while dropping off, or picking up animals for the foreseeable future. Thanks.

I am going to be spending the next two days rescuing a bunny called Midnight. I have been looking after her for the last two months, while her owner was in hospital, but now she is out of hospital and doesn’t want Midnight any more. She is currently back with her owner, outside in a hutch, with no bedding, or hay. Tomorrow morning though, I am going to pick her up and bring her back here for one night. Then on Christmas Eve we are taking her half way to her new home in Kettering, where she is going to live indoors with her new boyfriend until the Spring, when she will be moving in with 6 other bunnies in a lovely big outdoor pen, with the run of a large garden. I am very busy with a house full of animals and could do without spending two days driving around the countryside, but finding her such a lovely new home, is the best Christmas present I could have asked for, so I am more than happy to do it.

Breakfast time. It was still dark, so the photos not great.

Midnight the bunny is looking for a new home. I have been looking after her for the last two months. She is going home tomorrow, but her owner doesn’t want her anymore. She has been living indoors the last two months and is litter trained. Her owner doesn’t want her inside the house, so she is going to be very cold, when she goes home tomorrow, so if anyone can offer her a good home it would be great.

Rabbits are active overnight, that’s why they need permanent access to a secure exercise area 24/7. All this movement helps keep the gut & bladder functioning well and the mind happy. All enclosures need to be at least 10ft x 6ft x 3ft high as per the The Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund minimum guidelines. A hutch really is not enough!

TRANCING RABBITS

Across the internet, there are many, many of photos of rabbits being held on their backs.

Some people believe that rabbits enjoy being held this way and that it helps them relax, but this is far from true as they are a prey species and are pretending to be dead when held this way and will be extremely frightened.

Holding rabbits on their backs causes stress levels and their heart rate to increase meaning they are acting out of fear rather than enjoyment.

Repeatedly trancing your rabbit can cause long term physical and psychological issues and isn’t needed even to groom your rabbits or clip their nails.

Every time I open the fridge I get a strange feeling that I am being watched. They definitely know where their vegetables are kept!
