Lap spays!
Lovely Hazel the Labrador came in for a lap spay a few weeks ago, so we thought we’d share some photos of the procedure with you!
As you can see it’s a complex surgery but with the added benefit of smaller wounds and quicker healing time, it can definitely be a great option over traditional midline spays for some of our patients!
We do lap spays on dogs weighing 12kg and over and they’re a really good option for those bouncy, lively girlies who need to be back on their feet and back to normal a bit quicker because they simply can’t sit still for that long 😆
If you’re considering a lap spay for you dog, then please do give us a call and we’ll be happy to chat through the procedure with you and answer any questions or queries you have!

This is Ziggy! 😍 Ziggy came in for a castrate and, since he’s not the furriest of cats, we had to make extra sure he didn’t get cold so wrapped him up in a turtleneck jumper for the day! We think he appreciated it 🤔 he certainly didn’t seem to mind, anyway! ❤️

Ending the week on a happy ending story from a few weeks back!
This little love is called Tiddles and was brought into us as a stray by someone who was concerned after seeing her walking into a shop just before closing time looking rather wobbly.
The first thing we did was scan her to see if she had a microchip. The law came into action last summer that all cats must be microchipped but as she appeared elderly we weren’t hopeful that she had been. HOWEVER! We were very pleased to find that she did in fact have a chip and we were able to contact her owners who informed us that she had actually been missing since Christmas Eve! And she was microchipped last year at 17 years old! It just goes to show that it doesn’t matter the age of your pet, a microchip will always play a solid part in reuniting missing animals. She hadn’t wandered that far but far enough to get lost and thanks to the microchipping law and her owners actions to get her chipped, she was able to be reunited! ❤️

Anti-freeze contains a chemical called Ethylene Glycol, which has a sweet taste and smell that can attract cats—
and dogs too. If they find it, they might try to lick or eat it, so always ensure the lid is tightly closed and store it
somewhere completely out of your pet’s reach. Signs of anti-freeze poisoning in cats include vomiting, tiredness, unsteadiness, seizures and difficulty breathing. Once consumed, Ethylene Glycol turns into calcium oxalate crystals, which can severely damage the kidneys and often prove fatal.
If you think your cat may have ingested anti-freeze, contact your vet immediately - it’s an emergency.

On the subject of relaxed cats- we are very proud to be a “Silver accredited” cat friendly clinic! We provide fear free handling for cats in our care and have taken measures to make visits to us as stress-free as possible- this includes designated cat and dog separate waiting areas and providing cat hides in the kennels in our cat ward to give our patients somewhere safe and quiet to go if they wish. 🐈‍⬛

We have sadly had brought in a deceased male cat. He is entire (not castrated) with no microchip and is a ginger tabby colour. He was found just before Billingford, heading in the Dereham direction.

Have you seen the recent rules that make it a legal requirement for everyone in Great Britain who keeps birds outdoors to register with the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA)?
You can find more details here:
guidance-for-registration-of-kept-birds-sept-2024.pdf
New mandatory bird registration: what do keepers need to know – Government Vets
The rules apply to poultry and other captive birds including pets and aviary birds. You do not need to register indoor birds such as budgies, parrots, cockatiels and finches if they are fully housed in a dwelling (your home or another indoor structure) and with no access to the open air.

In light of the risk of Avian Flu, we ask that birds (both wild and pets) are not brought into practice. Please call ahead if you are planning on bringing a bird to be seen by us and we will be able to advise you of the next steps to be taken, but in the interests of safety and biosecurity we will not be able to see birds within the practice.
Many thanks for your cooperation and understanding

Weight clinics!

If your pet is overweight, the path to weight loss and a healthy, happy pet isn’t always clear. Losing weight can be a challenging and lengthy process, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or confused by conflicting advice.
That's why our veterinary nurses run dedicated weight loss clinics to support you and your pet in their weight loss journey.
During a weight loss clinic in one of our consult rooms, our nurses will take a full history where they find out more about your pets current diet, lifestyle, exercise and snack quota! We will weigh your pet to obtain an accurate record of where they are on the scales and also take some measurements with a good old fashioned tape measure as it's not just the numbers on the scale that can show weight loss, measurements of areas such as your pets neck, waist and base of tail will also help to show that they are losing centimetres as well as kilos! We will also show you how to complete a "body condition score" which shows how the fat is deposited over their body.
We will then create a personalised plan and discuss some changes you can start making to help your pet move toward a more healthy weight and we'll set achievable goals and help you with any setbacks.
We will continue to see you in practice throughout so that we can weigh your pet, re-do their measurements and talk about what is or maybe isn't working and adjust the plan to support you.
Our nurse weight clinics are free of charge, so if you would like to get booked in with us and start 2025 off with a positive change for your pet, then please do give us a call on 01362692508!

While reduced calorie intake is the most important part of weight loss, increasing energy expenditure through exercise and play can also have an impact.
Exercise also helps prevent muscle loss and increase flexibility, supporting healthy aging.

New year, new you? Lots of people make New Year's resolutions to improve their health and be more active- so this year, why not include your pet and focus on a healthier 2025 for everyone?
It is estimated that up to 65% of dogs and 50% of cats in the UK are obese.
Being overweight leaves pets at greater risk of conditions like diabetes, cancer, heart disease and arthritis and studies have shown that it can dramatically reduce their overall life expectancy.
