LET'S TALK ABOUT SEPARATION ANXIETY. (Part 2 - What to Do)
So what if your beloved fur-baby is showing signs of Separation Anxiety?
Like:
* Excessive grooming or paw licking
* Barking, Whining or Howling when you leave the room or house
* Chewing - Anything or Everything!
*Destruction of doors, areas around doors or windows
* Toileting when you have been out even though you know they went before you left them.
* At it's MOST EXTREME Point your dog may be losing hair, excessive panting, have hot spots or areas where they have groomed themselves raw and cannot settle.
This isn't what we want for our doggies, we want them to be HAPPY, INDEPENDANT, CHILLED OUT and Waggy Tailed! π
Therefore some things need to happen to change this;
1. Observation - YOU as the dog parent need to be Very Aware of what behaviour your dog is exhibiting as signs of stress. Take note of what changes in the household have happened recently too.
2. Tolerance Level - how long can your dog tolerate being in a room away from you? Time it and what do they do.
3. Space - Does your dog have it's own bed, crate or Safe Space that it can go to, if things get too stressful to take itself off to?
4. Comfort - When dogs CHEW it releases endorphins into their bloodstream that help them cope with Stress. Are you giving them an ALTERNATIVE to chew rather than shoes or furniture?
5. Behaviour - most dogs can Pre-Empt when you are about to leave by watching YOUR BEHAVIOUR. What are Your Habits before you go out or leave your dog? Do you Tell Them you are 'Leaving', 'Going out', 'Won't Be Long', 'Going to the Shops', etc?
π€ Do you lift keys, put on certain clothes, cologne or perfume, lift bags or other things that signal to your dog you are heading out?
π Observe Your Habits of what is said and what physically is the build up before you leave home. Can You Change This and Be Flexible?
Your Dog is SMART βand has watched you do this 100 TIMES or more. From this point on Your Job is to mix it up, encourage independence by practicing closing doors and not letting your dog go EVERYWHERE in the house.
β BOUNDARIES are Important.
π Give your dog an ALTERNATIVE to destroying something they shouldn't by giving them a Frozen Kong instead full of goodies, (See My Recent Post and Video on Frozen Kongs!)
β
Create a SAFE SPACE in your home for your dog that isn't in the main traffic path of the family that they can go and decompress, eat their Kong and Chill or Sleep when THEY want to.
β½ Build TOLERENCE Levels by playing games with your dog staying in one room for short periods at a time.
Lastly GET HELP if your dog is suffering from extreme anxiety. It's OK to ask for Help and Support. SA can be very stressful for owners too and no-one wants to see their dogs suffer. π€
