Oxlea Oxford Down Sheep

Oxlea Oxford Down Sheep A rare breed down sheep full of character. One of the oldest and the largest down breeds in the country. I started breeding Oxford Down sheep in 2018.

I have been breeding these sheep since 2018, foundation flock formed from Applewick and Gorse flock. I was looking for a "small" rare breed sheep for our farm in Devizes. After visiting another breeder in Wiltshire, I fell in love with the Oxford Down Sheep. The Oxford Down is now in the minority group on the RBST list. The Oxford Down is the largest UK Down breed and is far from small in physique

and character! Our first 3 pedigree ewes were a great little starter flock and relatively easy for a couple of novice first time shepherds! Our lamb boxes are sold as Taster box, Half box or Whole box of lamb and sell out every year to a few loyal customers, friends and family. We are expanding the flock gradually to keep up with demand. The lambs are fed on naturally grown grasses with plenty of variety and wild flowers. Our sheep fields are boardered by ancient hedgerow that the sheep love to nibble on. The hawthorn, hazel and blackberry provide extra vitamins and are a wildlife haven for birds and small mammals. No artificial fertiliser is used on our pastures and the sheep rotate the grazing on a regular basis making sure they always have access to fresh green grass. The Oxford Down lamb finish big at approximately 50kg so a large freezer is required if you wish to purchase a whole box of lamb!We have recently added to our farm produce with rare breed Oxford Sandy and Black pork and sausages available twice yearly and recently fresh farm eggs courtesy of our lovely ex battery rescue hens we recently rehomed. OxLea Oxford Down sheep are making a good start on their next paddock mowing job. Sheep are fantastic at reviving tired paddock grass that may be "horse sick" from years of the same grazing species. Sheep airate the soil helping impacted soil and root out all the rough grasses. They then leave behind fantastic fertiliser helping to feed the grass bed. We love Oxford Down Sheep but then we are a bit biased πŸ˜‰ πŸ₯°

We have been fortunate enough to be gifted another child's trampoline! These 3 trampolines have been a valuable "shade protection" for the ewes and lambs during this hot sunny weather - what a fabulous idea and works a treat! Highest welfare for our Oxford Down Sheep πŸ₯°

Today half of the flock at the away paddock in the village were treated for fly/maggot control fly strike prevention. These 16 ewes were sheared at the end of April so the fleece is now long enough to hold the sticky growth inhibitor spray. 'Clik Extra' has worked well for us and prevents maggots from developing. Maggots remain tiny and fall off the sheep πŸ‘

Remember these little beauts? Twins and triplets. One of our rams visited a small Kerry Hill flock last November and the kerry ewes produced the most fantastic lambs! We caught up with Hannah who sent us some up to date pictures πŸ₯°

We have had a busy few months since the end of lambing. Our replacement ewes and retired flock ewes are out paddock mowing in a beautiful local setting. We think the OxLea Oxford Down ewe looks at home in this historical parkland setting. Thank you to Kath Shaw I'm sure the OxLea ewes will enjoy their stay 😊

And that's a wrap! πŸ₯°Lambing 2025 is over - ending with two sets of twins! 4 lovely lively lambs. Both were ewe and ram lamb sets! We have yet to do our final count once we have had a bit of RnR. Very pleased to have no lamb casualties this year and a huge thank you to our mentor Mike who is always on the end of the telephone to walk us through the odd lambing complication! Thanks Mike πŸ˜‡
