Ending the week with gorgeous boy Freddie 🐾
Freddie has become a firm favourite with our clinical team having been in and out the hospital recently following a period of lameness.
Freddie has cruciate disease whereby the cruciate ligament in Freddie’s stifle (knee) has degenerated, weakened and ruptured/torn causing, swelling, pain, instability of the joint, and lameness.
Freddie’s cruciate rupture was diagnosed by a clinical examination and x-rays. Following his diagnosis vets Emma and James took Freddie to surgery to stabilise his stifle using the Modified Maquet Procedure (MMP). This technique advances the position of part of the tibia, giving the effect of modifying the forces on the stifle (knee joint) to neutralise the instability caused by the ligament rupture.
Freddie’s anaesthetic was carefully monitored throughout the procedure by our RVN Charlotte who also captured some behind the scenes shots of Emma and James performing Freddie’s surgery and reviewing his post operative x-rays 🦴
Wishing Freddie a swift recovery and we’ll look forward to seeing him back regularly to monitor his progress 🩵

This cold spell is set to stay so we’ve gathered our clinical teams top tips on keeping your pets safe during the cold weather ⛄️ Keep your cat indoors, especially overnight and try to keep them away from anti-freeze (ethylene glycol) - antifreeze tastes extremely sweet to cats but can sadly cause acute kidney injury which can be fatal! Try not to leave any lying around in garages or sheds where your cats might go to explore 🐈 Clean off your dogs paws and tummies after all walks to prevent salt grit from the road irritating their skin and mouth 🦮 Consider putting a coat or jumper on your dog when out on walks in this cold weather - especially small dogs, puppies, senior dogs or breeds who feel the cold a lot more such as greyhounds 🐕🦺 Trim the fur around your dogs toes to prevent ice balls forming - these can form between the pads and toes of the paw and are really painful 🧊 Ensure your rabbits and guinea pigs are kept in the warm. If your rabbits and guinea pigs live outdoors ensure their hutches are well insulated, with lovely thick beds, and give them a heat source such as a microwaveable “snuggle safe” to keep them warm. Be sure to also check their water to ensure it hasn’t frozen 🐰 And finally please take care when visiting the practice as our car park can become very slippery! ⚠️ #winterwarning #estcourtpets #estcourtvets #estcourtvetsdevizes #teamestcourt #wiltshirevets #devizespets #devizes #wiltshire #vetsurgery #vetstagram #vetsofig #vetsinpractice #vetslife #vetnurselife
You may have heard our team mentioning “VidiVet” at reception, on the phone or during a consultation 🩺 VidiVet is a brand new service that allows you to ask a qualified vet any question about your pet 24/7 via the VidiVet app. This new service helps take the pressure off our team in practice so we can concentrate on those pets in hospital that need our full attention. The VidiVet app is free to download and is a service paid for by us to provide you with veterinary advice 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Once you send a message, video or voice note to one of the friendly vets at VidiVet they will get back to you with a video message with advice for you and your pet. If your pet needs to be seen urgently the vet will advise you to call our emergency line which will put you straight through to one of our helpful nursing team who will arrange an emergency visit to the practice as normal outside of opening hours. Meet Stewie and Pumpkin 🐰🐰 Stewie was recently admitted after his owner noticed he wasn’t quite himself. Stewie has previously had surgery to remove a hair ball from his gastrointestinal tract and was experiencing similar symptoms. After an initial examination by vet Emma, Stewie was placed on intravenous fluid therapy, given pain relief and gut stimulants before having x-rays. X-rays revealed some abnormal gas patterns so vet James and RVN Gemma proceeded to take Stewie into surgery 🩺 After a successful surgery Stewie was taken back to recovery where his best friend Pumpkin was waiting for him 🐾 Here they are together munching on their greens 🥬 We have since seen Stewie back for two post operative checks and he is doing really well ❤️ #escourtpets

We can’t recommend a good quality pet insurance policy highly enough. Veterinary science is advancing all the time and we can do so much for pets that we once didn’t have the equipment and knowledge to do. With these advancements naturally comes costs and owners can be surprised at the price of some veterinary treatments. Here are some things to bear in mind when choosing a policy for your pet.
After surgical procedures it is important that patients are encouraged to return to a normal routine. One of the ways we ensure this is to encourage them to eat. Thankfully, we do not see some diseases as commonly in the UK anymore because as responsible pet owners, we're great at vaccinating our pets. However, they’re still out there, so any unvaccinated dog is still potentially at risk. Do you have any queries about vaccinating your pet? If so, please get in touch!
