Another fabulous post from So Help Me Dog about why the language that us trainers and owners use, matters.

It’s a cue, not a command ✅

❓ TELL or ASK? COMMAND or CUE?

🐶 The language we use with/about our dogs is important because it can form the basis of our relationship with them. It can change the way we perceive them and treat them.

❌ If we think in terms of “commanding” or “telling” our dog to do something, we generally think them bad or disobedient if they don’t comply. That can then lead to punishing doggo by shouting at them or pulling/pushing them around (or worse). We think of it as the dog’s fault. You end up frustrated and cross and doggo can’t understand why you’re now angry and feels worried and uncertain. If this happens a lot, it will start to erode your relationship and destroy your dog’s trust in you. In your dog’s eyes, you start to become unpredictable and unreliable.

✅ If, however, we think in terms of “cueing” or “asking” our dog to do something, if they then don’t do it, instead of thinking they’re bad, we can ask the question “WHY didn’t they do it?” Often, the answer to this question will have something to do with one or a combo of:

🔴 MOTIVATION - this might be a ‘what’s in it for me?’ thing - is the alternative a better, more rewarding option? Is the treat high enough value? OR maybe pup is stuffed full of food and the treat you’re offering is now just ….. bleugh…. No, thanks…

🔴 TRAINING - the behaviour isn’t yet fully bombproofed in all situations/environments. You haven’t worked on the 3 Ds of training - Duration (how long they can do it for); Distance (how far away from you can they be and do the behaviour); Distraction (can they do the behaviour in the face of all types of distraction?).

🔴 PHYSIOLOGY - things like pain, tiredness, hormones/chemicals…… For instance, if your dog has got some general pain/discomfort they might be more mouthy/bitey, or less able to settle. If they are feeling stiff/sore, they may be more reluctant to hop down off the sofa or walk for a long way. If they’re tired, they might be more grumpy (with you, the kids, other dogs) or less reluctant to walk or shift over on the sofa. If they have adrenaline/cortisol floating around the system, they will have a hard time listening to you. And as for the hormones associated with adolescence? Well, when was the last time your human teenager actually listened to anything you said??

🔴 EXPECTATIONS - you have asked too much of your dog. You have put them in a situation they can’t cope with and expected them to “behave nicely”.

❓Can you see how we’ve shifted from blaming doggo to trying to understand what might be going on for them? We start examining how our own behaviour might be part of the problem but, above all, we start looking at how we can help them instead.

♥️ Now we have a relationship based on love, care and understanding. We create a bond and connection as our dog learns he can trust you to help him out when he needs it.......All just by changing our language.

Thanks to DTAS for the graphic.

Introduced tonight’s training class to the emergency stop, a lifesaving training skill designed to keep your dog safe when recalling them would be dangerous, for example if they crossed a busy road. Featuring 17 week old Labrador Bear showing us all how clever he is 😍

Well done to all of those that have earned their training foundations rosettes recently, it’s been wonderful to see anxious puppies turn into confident, well rounded youngsters and older dogs fine tuning their skills and gaining new ones along the way. Being a small part of the journey is a wonderful feeling and brings me so much joy

‼️ Rawhide warning ‼️

❗️RAWHIDE❗️

POSSIBLY THE MOST DANGEROUS DOG TREAT ON THE PLANET!

The chews are made from cattle or horse hides and their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white “pure” look and remove the rancid smell. Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

On testing, these chews have shown traces of arsenic, mercury, chromium and formaldehyde.
If that wasn`t bad enough they regularly cause intestinal blockages, poisoning from chemical residue and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Leave them in the shop or if some well meaning person buys them for your dog put them safely away and then dispose in the bin!

Heartbroken to hear that the beautiful Bella has crossed over rainbow 🌈 bridge, leaving her owners and “brother” devastated. Having had the privilege of walking Bella for over 2 1/2 years, she will leave a huge hole in our hearts, but the memories of the fun, laughter and mischief that we had on those walks will forever remain with us. Run free beautiful Bella 🌈💔

After a very wet day, snugs with this one were very welcomed and enjoyed 😊 I’ve had lots of messages from dog walking customers today about if we are still going for a walk in the heavy rain. Yes, we walk in all weathers when safe to do so, and if plans ever change I will contact you all directly 😊 we’ve never rained off walks and wouldn’t do so unless there are serious weather warnings in place, you can assume that Krissy (who actually enjoys working in the rain 🤪) will be arriving as usual 🐾
