The XL Bully ban, some thoughts...

Here in the United Kingdom I feel the ban on XL Bully breeds, was ill thought out and as a quick-fire response to some awful attacks reported over a short period of time. I do not believe that Breed Specific Legislation addresses the real issues.

It has created controversy and divided so many people, dog lovers and dog loathers, as well as people who want to feel safe and parents too. I have spoken to many people about this and there was such a fear inducing range of news stories that seemed to propel the Government into fast action.

As a positive reinforcement dog trainer, my perspective is that every dog is different and a blanket ban does not fix things. I have had the good fortune to meet and train some lovely, beautiful natured friendly XL Bully types. Yes they are big and strong and can find it hard to come away from people or dogs they see, yet they can be supported in a loving, kind and appropriate way to choose to be with their caring owner instead.

Reactivity is on the rise in many dog breeds, this could be a whole other article, but because the XL Bully is so heavy, strong and has a big bite, unfortunately some people have bought them to turn into weapons. Some breeders have bred for the worse traits, and have created some dogs that are pretty messed up and then have sold them on to people who don't understand, or don't want to understand their individual dog's needs. These practises luckily are not the norm.

Any dog treated badly, brought up with negatives, with punishing for behaviour can become worried and anxious. If taught to attack others it might just do that too or if frightened, in pain or hungry it could retaliate. Dogs are clever, people can train dogs to do almost anything and unfortunately this is where the big dog breeds can come unstuck.

I feel there should have been time and opportunity available to explore alternative approaches to address the main issues.

I feel that there are so many things that play into a dog's behaviour and it is not a quick fix. Behaviour in dogs is a huge topic: breeding, genetics, individual temperament, environmental issues, upbringing, events that they may react to, individual emotions in specific situations and ways of training, all play a part.

If the dog has plenty of opportunity to enjoy life in a calm, safe place, with plenty of chances to explore, enrichment, chance to sniff, play in a way they love, have plenty of mental stimulus and has it's individual needs met, then behaviour struggles can be hugely reduced.

Positive reinforcement training reinforces behaviours we would like our dogs to do instead, a lot of the time. A dog pulling on a lead for example can be taught that it's better to stay near the owner than to pull: through reinforcing each time the dog is next to it's owner, this can be rewarded in a range of ways: sometimes food rewards, toy rewards, chance to go and sniff more, chance to seek out something, chance to have a fuss, spin, sit, give paw you name it, if you match the reward with what your dog loves, your dog will love to be nearer to you too! This builds a strong and sustainable bond between the dog and you.

I believe that with better education for people, especially for those who buy these big dogs, on the dog's needs and with positive reinforcement and games based training for the dogs, a lot of the issues can be reduced.

As Positive reinforcement trainers we believe that educating and creating kind and supportive communities of responsible dog owners is a must. Encouraging sharing knowledge and providing resources to help is essential.

I believe that considering each dog on an individual basis would have been much more sensible. Licensing for all dogs and supporting people with their dogs through compulsory positive reinforcement training methods at least in the puppy and adolescent phases would be much more helpful.

There are so many other issues here too: Why do some people hurt or abuse animals or create fear in their pets? Why do some people feel the need to turn their dogs into fighting machines? Why do some people get dogs if they aren't going to treat them fairly? This could be a week's worth of writing!

Now I hope most people have chosen to keep their dogs, to work with the legislation, to have neutered them, muzzled them and are continuing to provide a loving, happy home to their XL Bullies.

I know this is a wide ranging subject area and is very controversial, however at the heart of it we really should consider the safety and welfare of people and dogs. I am a mum too and would be devastated if anything happened to my child or to any other children. I know dogs can be dangerous and there are many ways to reduce this early on in a dog's life: caring, loving homes, good training, proper socialisation early on and building positive experiences into every day life for our dogs.

I am so deeply sad that so many lovely dogs have been put to sleep, surrendered, rescues are full, killed in horrific ways, or won't get to enjoy freedom to run and sniff and play happily because of this ban.

If you need any help with your XL Bully or any other dog breed please get in touch, or find positive reinforcement trainers near you, your dog will thank you for it! πŸ˜ŠπŸ•πŸ’œ

It's so lovely being back at work this week! I've been meeting some gorgeous new dogs and their owners and solving struggles... from pulling on lead, separation issues, crate training, recall, calmness in the house, not stealing, not jumping up it's all been happening and I'm loving it! I've had some lovely comments and am thrilled with how well the dogs pick up the training through fun, games and rewards!

So it's World Mental Health Day today... πŸ’š
can we share anything that helps us feel better...? For me writing down what I'm grateful for can improve my mindset at the start of the day, spending time with dogs in nature can be a real boost, playing games with family and friends or reading, or chatting with a simple cup of tea can help. I know that everyone is different and we can all suffer at times in our lives... often our lovely dogs can help ground us but can also add to our worries too.
What are you finding that helps you? πŸ˜ŠπŸ•πŸ©πŸ’œthttps://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/our-work/public-engagement/world-mental-health-day

Brilliant Barkers are dog trainers, pet sitters and dog walkers in Sheffield, UK, specialising in kind, fun, training methods.

I am, Kirsty, a mum and a qualified dog trainer and teacher. I have been teaching a wide variety of children for over 20 years and fancied a change! I have always had a passion for teaching and helping people to learn new things. From an early age I trained my own dogs, taught a wide variety of children and adults how to ride our horses and have always been passionate about animals. I now use my vast experience, qualifications and skills to help children and adults learn about and understand their animals, specifically their dogs.

I love seeing the spark when a child learns something new and it is no different from the joy evident when a dog makes a really good choice and is rewarded for it! I use a variety of fun, friendly, concept and games based methods to help dogs and people learn! Please contact me if you, or your family need any help with your dog or need someone to dog walk or pet sit!
