So sad that Karen Pryor has died. I'll share this lovely tribute to her from Zak George as she was a founding well respected positive reinforcement trainer. πŸ•πŸ©πŸ’œπŸ˜Šhttps://www.facebook.com/share/p/15PTx7htwn/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Today, we honor the incredible life and legacy of Karen Pryor, a pioneer who transformed the world of animal training and left an indelible mark on our industry.

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Karen Pryor’s groundbreaking work paved the way for trainers like myself, and countless others, to advocate for humane, effective training methods. While the fight for positive change would still continue, her visionary efforts undoubtedly accelerated the progress, bringing us to this better place much sooner than we might have otherwise achieved.

Karen Pryor was one of the first to show the world that animals don’t need to be trained with violence or fear. Her work with marine mammals in the 1960s, grounded in science and compassion, paved the way for positive reinforcement techniques that continue to shape the industry.

She didn’t just teach us how to train better; she taught us to see animals as sentient beings, deserving of respect, patience, and understanding.

Her book Don’t Shoot the Dog! remains a cornerstone in the field of behavioral psychology and animal training, introducing the world to the principles of operant conditioning and the power of positive reinforcement. The Karen Pryor Academy, founded in 2007, has trained thousands of professionals, ensuring her legacy endures in the hands of those committed to ethical training practices.

She laid the foundation for a movement that prioritizes trust, connection, and kindness. The positive changes we see in the industry today, our collective rejection of outdated, punitive methods, are a direct result of her fearless advocacy and unwavering belief in a better way.

Her work changed our field, but more importantly, it changed the way we connect with the animals who share our lives.

Thank you, Karen, for showing us what’s possible when science and compassion come together.

Your legacy will continue to inspire us, and we’ll strive to honor your memory by carrying your vision of compassion for animals forward. Rest in peace, and thank you for everything.

Zak George

- If you find your dog is stealing or snatching for food,, this is a great game to train.
This is the early stage of a 'Not Yours game!' it helps the puppy choose to look away from the food and instead you reward in another hand or play 'go find it!' Here the puppy learns an alternative to stealing the food, 'eyes' gets the pup's attention on you and she learns to ignore the previous food.
Here is a lovely client learning the game with her puppy. Can you spot when the pup looks away from the food?
It's tricky to spot when your puppy looks away, so we reinforce again, with a repeat of the game.
Have a go, it's a brilliant game for puppies. It teaches disengagement, (looking away) engagement - (looking to you) and self control around food.

If you are struggling with your dog pulling on lead, try these quick tips here... I am working with a Sprocker puppy who was constantly pulling on the lead.
We put tons of value into being beside or behind me by rewarding for choosing to be 'close'. At the start I click, then reward for nearby and reinforce next to me, gradually the criteria is to get even closer and to choose me over the distractions. Then we add in a forward throw of a treat 'go find it', this allows the forward motion but also creates a rebound back to the person. Sometimes if we give some of what the dog wants as a reward in itself they choose you more often... there was also a fake throw forward so the dog realises the good stuff comes from the person too!
Try it!

Brilliant Barkers are dog trainers, pet sitters and dog walkers in Sheffield, UK, specialising in kind, fun, training methods.

I am, Kirsty, a mum and a qualified dog trainer and teacher. I have been teaching a wide variety of children for over 20 years and fancied a change! I have always had a passion for teaching and helping people to learn new things. From an early age I trained my own dogs, taught a wide variety of children and adults how to ride our horses and have always been passionate about animals. I now use my vast experience, qualifications and skills to help children and adults learn about and understand their animals, specifically their dogs.

I love seeing the spark when a child learns something new and it is no different from the joy evident when a dog makes a really good choice and is rewarded for it! I use a variety of fun, friendly, concept and games based methods to help dogs and people learn! Please contact me if you, or your family need any help with your dog or need someone to dog walk or pet sit!
