It is no secret that I have a soft spot for poodles π© especially when they are sweet baby angels like Sydney π©· I absolutely adore grooming Sydney, he is so pretty and has a gorgeous coat to scissor. It's nice to be able to practice on another poodle! Before he met his current owners he really wasn't looked after very well at all. He has come so far since being in his forever home and he is a testament to his pawrents β¨

Using the right grooming tools at home makes all the difference to keeping your dogs knot free. Also keeping your dogs coat clean and free from debris and mud. It is really important for all dogs but particularly those of you with dogs that have a curly wavy coat.
Dog shampoos have come a long way in the past few years. Specially formulated to be the correct pH for dogs skin and coat. Please don't use human shampoos on your dog, I know it's tempting but it could cause issues with their skin. I recommend @ruffbarkinson @millys.co.uk or @dogslovehownd which are available online or in pet shops.
In this video I had to make do with a plastic brush that I use for my own hair. Now, it is a fabulous brush for curly human hair, not so much for dogs. Slicker brushes and combs are available to purchase from my salon, they are the ones that I use day to day on your dogs and Fifi (when I find hers eventually)
Don't worry, I will be grooming Fifi properly when I'm back in the salon. This was just to make do until then. I will have to bring a brush and comb from the salon. I really do have no idea where I've put the other ones!

β Reactive dogs - I bring Fifi with me to the salon so I can't take on dog reactive dogs. I no longer want to take on dogs that have reactive to tendancies to being groomed. This is for my own safety and mental health. I recommend that people that have dogs with issues see a behaviourist and work on grooming their dogs themselves at home. There is a fantastic book called "Taking the Grrr out of dog grooming" by Sue Williamson on Amazon.
β Large or giant breed dogs - my salon and equipment are just not suitable for them unfortunately. The largest I can accommodate are standard poodles or poodle crosses.Β
β Double coated medium/large dogs - breeds such as German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Border Collie, Japanese Akita, Husky etc. My salon is not suitable as it is all wood and I can just never clean it enough afterwards, the hair gets everywhere! I have to hoover the ceiling π The largest dog of this type that I can do would be a Labrador.Β
βDogs that don't like their nails being trimmed. If your dog doesn't like their nails to be done, then I won't do them, they will have to be done at home or at the vets. I won't put a dog under stress for a nail trim, it can make them lose all trust in me and then they may not even allow me to do the groom.Β Β
βDogs that need handstrip

I do try and take pics when I can, not every dog is willing π It is much more important that the time I spend with your dogs is focused on increasing their tolerance/enjoyment of the groom, not on aesthetics and getting a cute photo. Photos are just a bonus!

When your dog comes to "Fifi's Holistic Dog Grooming" every step of the grooming experience is thought about.
Take the bathing process for example, it is not simply a quick wash with some generic shampoo. I have tried and tested many brands of shampoo and I have found Ruff Barkinson to be one of the best. Vegan, cruelty free, as natural as possible and also environmentally conscious. Not to mention the cleaning power, kind to skin, natural but not overpowering scents. I also use their conditioner to put moisture back into the coat and leave them soft and shiny without silicones.
The water is just as important as the products used! I use a special ionic filtered shower head to help distribute the products in to the coat so that they can penetrate the skin and get to work. I actually have the same showerhead in my own shower it is that good! My skin is prone to eczema and irritation and I have found that it really helps to keep it at bay. Once I knew it worked I just had to get one for my salon so that the dogs could feel the benefit too!
The Holistic part of "Fifi's" is that the whole process of your dog's grooming experience is considered and catered for. I just want every dog to have the best of everything π

Is your dog bored at home? Does your doggo like sniffing out treats? Then they will love my snuffle mats! Sniffing is a rewarding type of enrichment for your dog. It produces dopamine in their brain which makes them happier and less anxious π Also it keeps them busy for a while!
All you need to do is sprinkle their favourite treats over the top and ruffle them into the strips of fabric so that they are hidden and your dog has to sniff them out π If you feed your dog kibble, you can switch out their bowl for a snuffle mat so it is more of a challenge! Using a snuffle mat can also slow down fast eaters if they gobble up their food.
I use snuffle mats in the salon to calm down over excited dogs and encourage anxious dogs to feel calm in the salon. This helps me when it comes to grooming as the dogs are calm and happy π
The snuffle mats are machine washable at a low temp, but not tumble dryer safe. I find they dry fine on top of a radiator π

I absolutely love doing out of the box styles on dogs π My favourite phrase to hear from clients is "Do whatever you want" π when you say this to me, be prepared for pom pom legs, tassel ears, mohawks, man buns, topknots and/or colour accents with hair chalks, pet hair dye, blow pens, hair bows etc.
Teddy bear styles or short shaved styles are my bread and butter, but if you fancy anything a little different just say the word! Makes my day more interesting and lets me scratch my creative itch! Of course these styles are only possible with dogs that are okay with the grooming experience. I would never subject a dog to more faffing if they didn't tolerate the grooming process. Rupert is a very good boy, he was an absolute angel for me doing this style on him. πΌ

This is Harvey, He was a little bit nervous when he came in for his grooming session. You can see that he is displaying some uncomfortable body language, for example: panting, lip licking, whale eye (showing whites of the eyes) and pacing. It was important not to start the grooming process straight away, as this would have escalated things. I gave him a few minutes to relax, by making up the shampoo, replying to some messages etc. I then encouraged him to come to me for fusses which he did! Then I offered him a lickimat with liver paste and he loved that! The act of licking can be self soothing for dog and releases endorphins to help ease stress. This only took 15 minutes to get Harvey to a place where he was more comfortable.
It is so important to treat dogs as fellow thinking, feeling beings with emotions just like us. Don't expect them to be okay with things straight away or that they will "get used to it". They do not know that they are being groomed and that it is important for their health. They think you are taking them to the weird lady that wets them and uses that horrible blowy thing for some reason and those whizzy metal things to cut their hair off, they haven't a clue! We are their guardians and teachers and they look to us for guidance in a world that they do not understand, with rules that don't make sense to them. We have to teach them that it is okay and they can trust us. This is being a holistic groomer, taking into consideration the the dog as a whole being and not just a haircut.
